I love that War Pigs made 3 appearances. I’m assuming one of those was the Cake version, which is pretty kick ***, imo.

I didn't keep my list, but I know I had Gaye's "....Grapevine" at #1 and Jimi's "....Watchtower" at #2. Bobby Womack's "California Dreaming", GFR's "The Locomotion". and The Beatles' "Twist And Shout" were on there somewhere.

I thought "Hallelujah" would finish at #1 by the listeners aggregate. I also thought there would be more than 5 different covers of it.

The morning show is playing some of the records that only got one vote today. I think the host said there were over 6,000 of those.

CCR's Grapevine finished ahead of Gaye's, and I wonder if that's because some people don't know Gaye's version is a cover.

Same with Good Lovin'. The Dead's version finished ahead of the Young Rascals' version and I bet a lot of people didn't know that the Young Rascals' hit was a cover. Now, the Dead might have come out ahead anyway because there are a LOT of Deadheads who listen to WXPN.

Grand Funk appearances:

Their cover of The Locomotion came in at #681. The Jayhawks' cover of Bad Time came in at #492.

I'm sure you're right. Hell - there were songs on that countdown where I'd never heard of the original, much less the cover.

Another example: The Clash's I Fought the Law was #21 but the Bobby Fuller Four version was not ranked at all -- probably because most people don't know it too is a cover.

This thread reappearing on page 1 gives me an opportunity to right a wrong from krista's original project. For some reason, I went with a one song per artist rule for either coverer or coveree. My only Springsteen entry was The Band's excellent cover of "Atlantic City" at #5 which left no room for another.

If not for my scarcity schtick, I would have included The Mavericks cover of "All That Heaven Will Allow". The original is off of Tunnel of Love so it has those 80s synth strings which gives the song a dreamy quality. It's a nice version but lacks the oomph of the cover. The Mavericks never allow the song to drift away to dreamland; Paul Deakin's solid backbeat keeps it firmly nailed to the dance floor. Where the Boss sometimes struggles reaching for the high notes, that's never a problem for The Mavericks' Raul Malo's incredible pipes. There's more joy and energy to the cover that matches the optimism of the lyrics and Malo's death this week adds a special poignancy to the last verse.
