The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (4 Viewers)

- I dig this cover of Faith No More's "Epic" by Shovels & Rope and Lera Lynn. I like it better than the original.
- Faith No More's cover of "Easy" is easy like Sunday morning. It stays very close to The Commodores original, which ain't a bad thing being that it's a great song.
This Faith No More combo was the one that really surprised me last night when putting the list together. That and Bobby "Blue" Bland getting two covers in one day. Cool stuff.

Walk with You – Ben Harper (Ringo Starr) -- I know the original from krista's solo Beatles thread and from a Ringo special that I saw on AXS TV. In fact, I think Harper was in his band for that broadcast. This is a compelling read.

As anyone who read my solo Beatles thread posts (no one) would know, "Walk with You" was my surprise choice as my #1 Ringo solo song. It garnered that distinction in large part due to the Paul harmonies that made me cry, Even though I like Ben Harper, I was skeptical of the cover since he wouldn't have that sentimental aspect of the song, but boy, he did a great job with it and made something so different yet faithful that I  it.

I haven't gotten around to listening yet to the 25s. I received a copy of a re-release of Hum's You'd Prefer An Astronaut in the mail today and I'm spinning it and checking to make sure of its integrity, so to speak. What a record! I'm excited.

"Stars," the third track and second single off of the album, should be on any compilation that purports to tell the story of the nineties and guitar-based rock. It's mainstream shoegaze, really. Like the Smashing Pumpkins but cooler.

This is a fabulous reason to delay listening to the 25s. "Stars" is an underappreciated gem at this point, though IIRC it got at least a couple of votes in our US countdown.

ETA: OK, I stopped being lazy and looked it up. Just one vote, from @landrys hat

25. Rowboat - Johnny Cash (Beck)

One night Beck was at a country and western club in L.A. and befriended the steel pedal guitarist of the band that was working there. They struck up a quick friendship, and Beck asked him if he'd record with him because Beck was in the middle of recording an album. The guitarist agreed to do so and all was good. They set a date when they would play and record with each other. However; on the day they were supposed to record, Beck realized he had no appropriate country songs, and with an hour or two before he had to pick the guitarist up, he wrote one.

How Cash decided to record it. One night in 1995, Cash and Beck both took the stage at Pantages Theater in L.A. Beck was the opening act. Cash heard him do the song, and was really impressed by Beck's whole show. Given that American Recordings had come out in '94 (?), he was already entrenched in doing covers of modern songwriters, and decided that he wanted to do Beck's song. Fast forward a few years and it wound up on Unchained, an album on which Tom Petty and others were instrumental.

I chose the track because I love the lyrics and the meandering, sort of slow, beat. simey's observation that she would think the cover was the other way around is pretty spot-on. I have a hard time imagining Beck doing it, but Cash said in an interview that Beck was fooling around backstage and was really good with what Cash called "hillbilly music." Knocking out the lyrics and music to "Rowboat" in an hour on the day he was due to record something countrified makes me respect Beck's musical prowess much more than I originally did. Bravo!

- Holly Golightly's cover of "Box Elder" sounds more distorted and edgier than Pavement's original. I like this version. I wonder what FBG dr. pill would think about it. He loves pavement.
- This "Frankenstein" cover by Phish is spacey. 🪐 It's good.
- I think the "Walk With You" cover by Ben Harper is a bit better than Ringo's original. The lyrics go so well with Ben's voice and singing style.
- The Ramones punked up cover of "California Sun" is fun.
- I like this piano driven "Knives Out" cover by The Flaming Lips. I like it just as much as Radiohead's original if not better. This is why KP hates covers. He can't handle others outshining Radiohead.
- I'm not sure what the original of "Radioactive" sounds like, but I like the violin in this cover.
- "She Comes in Colors" cover by the Hooters updates the sound of Love's original version.
- I didn't know either version of "The Horses," so I listened to both, and Daryl Braithwaite did a nice job on his cover of Ricky Lee's song.
- Fairpoint Convention does a really good version of "Tam Lin," and the highlight of it is Sandy Denny.
- This cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" will always make me think of Prince showing off on guitar. He was one of the best guitarist ever. 🎸
I think the remaining songs are repeats. 🎬

#25 California Sun - The Ramones (Joe Jones)
Original: Youtube

For those who like covers with an unique take, this is one of the wider differences in my list. Though I don't know if the Ramones heard the Joe Jones original version when deciding to record this, as much as another cover that I won't talk about just in case it shows up later. Anyway, naturally the Ramones' take is a fast and hard-hitting in that classic punk style. Leading to a somewhat shorter version, though no version I've seen gets to 2 minutes 30 seconds, so it's not like things were cut down TOO much.

At #24 is one of two 10 minutes songs on my countdown. The original is very familiar. The cover? Probably not. We'll see what you think about it.

I get the look and attitude are punk, and I get why they were labeled as such - but when listening now I think they sounded like an early sixties pop band (and more specifically the girl groups) with a bit of sloppiness in the playing and "off" vocals.

I love the Ramones so this wasn't mean as any kind of insult at all - just an observation in my older years.

Figured I'd put this public service announcement here rather than in the RIP thread - be mindful of any jokes there. It's resulted in a wasteland of timeouts over the years.
Yeah Joe absolutely over-reacted at a Tom Petty joke and closed our draft thread down in the middle of a draft. I'm sure I love Petty more than him, and took no offense at the joke and realize it was more about the situation (is he or isn't he?) than a disrespect of Petty. It was really odd imo.

I don't think I was part of that draft, but I can see how it happened. Gallows humor doesn't typically go over well in these parts.

It was reported that he died, and then a few hours later that perhaps the story was premature and he was still holding on - some one (can't remember the screen name but his avatar was Calvin) posted the Monty Python clip "I'm not dead yet" and Joe came in a shut the draft down.

Joe did open that thread back up, and he apologized for closing it. It was right after the Vegas shootings, and I think he said that coupled with Tom Petty's death may have caused him to react too sensitively. Something like that. Anyway, moderators will give people TOs like zam mentioned for dead jokes.

I got one a few years ago and almost quit this place for good.

same - I got it for a post I literally deleted 15 seconds after but the troll it was directed at screen shotted it and reported me. I was suspended, despite self-policing. I seriously considered leaving for good but it was in the middle of a draft.

I see that moron still starts a lot of **** here (and gets called out), but I have him on ignore so I only see the responses to him, fortunately.

I think a lot of good spoke up - enough that Joe saw the light when he wasn't running as hot anymore. I know I had a lot of back-and-forth with him over it.

7.ee - The Golden Palominos - "Omaha" (cover of Moby Grape)

The original:
Moby Grape was the hottest band on the scene for San Francisco's summer of love in 1967 but things didn't quite work out for them like they did for some other bands of the moment. The Grape fell victim to a combination of bad decisions, bad business and bad luck. "Omaha" was a standout track off their debut album--it should have been a hit but Columbia decided to simultaneously release five singles which diluted its impact.

The cover: The Golden Palominos was an 80s supergroup led by Feelies drummer Anton Fier. There was a rotating cast of Palominos but bassist Bill Laswell and guitarist Nicky Skopelitis were constants on their early albums. The Palominos never had a single lead singer either. Syd Straw who also covered a Moby Grape song earlier in the countdown was their most frequent vocalist but singers as varied as Jack Bruce and John Lydon took their turns. Fier enlisted Michael Stipe for the Palominos 1985 version of "Omaha". Both the original and cover are taken up tempo but the Palominos' version deconstructs the tune pushing the drums way up front and inserting a skronky guitar solo by Henry Kaiser in the break.

Is the cover better than the original?:
This one was a tough call for me but I'm going with the cover. I like how the Golden Palominos update the original's call for hippie dippie free love with an unmistakeably 80s intensity. It's also cool to hear Stipe perform in a completly different context from R.E.M. It hints at an alternate universe where he dropped out of NYU instead of UGA and instead hooked up with a bunch of downtown NYC scenesters.

Running scoreboard: Covers 3 - Originals 4

Eight Miles High - Leo Kottke (The Byrds)

Leo Kottke is a guitar player known for his fingerpicking style of guitar. I was made aware of him through a different forum because somebody had recommended this cover as worthy of a listen. I listened and agreed and thought the source material and interpretation were so strong as to deserve mention here. That’s about it. Love his baritone and love the soaring guitar that goes along with this. The original happens to be one of my favorite songs ever, and the cover is a cool thing to hear.
A very young Kottke appears in this episode of The Midnight Special which was recently uploaded to Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyQ1FpW2MyY

I understand now the pop and oldie influences Ramones were wearing on their sleeves. But to my 1977 AOR infested ears they sounded and looked "punk rock" and that's what everyone was calling them back then.

I grew up poor as hell, but I had a tiny B&W TV in my bedroom. The Midnight Special got more play on that thing than any other show.

Looks like they have uploaded a bunch of full episodes, so I'll be perusing when I can.

This episode also has T. Rex, whose members appear to be on lots of drugs.

So much good this round that I had to be more discriminating in what I call out:

Songs That I Knew the Cover and the Original

titusbramble/Val Rannous: It's My Life - No Doubt (Talk Talk)
Pip’s Invitation: While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Tom Petty, Prince, et al (The Beatles) - didn't know this was on Spotify. The Prince stories are epic.
zamboni: Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want - Dream Academy (The Smiths) - Not a lot of really good Smiths covers. I speak from lots of deep dives. This is one of the best.
Scoresman: Knives Out - Flaming Lips (Radiohead)
Raging weasel: Easy – Faith No More (The Commodores)
Mister CIA: Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads (Simon and Garfunkel) - Evan Dando has done a bunch of great covers. Big fan.
landrys hat: Epic - Shovels & Rope w/Lera Lynn (Faith No More)

Songs That I Only Know the Original but Really Enjoyed the Cover

Don Quixote: Yesterday - Marvin Gaye (The Beatles)
Dr. Octopus: The Man in Me – The Band of Heathens, Hayes Carll (Robert Zimmerman) - yeah, I only know this b/c of Lebowski.
New Binky the Doormat: Paranoid - The Dickies (Black Sabbath)

Song I Like That I Only Know the Cover but not the Original

Andy Dufresne: I've Done Everything For You – Rick Springfield (Sammy Hagar) - Unlike the rest of you snoots, I've owned my love of Rick Springfield for decades.
Mt. Man: California Sun - The Ramones (Joe Jones)
krista4: Walk with You – Ben Harper (Ringo Starr)

Songs I Like That I Didn't Know Either Version

simey: I'll Take Care Of You – Beth Heart, Joe Bonamassa (Bobby "Blue" Bland)
Hawks64: Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City - Black Pumas (Bobby Blue Bland)
rockaction: Rowboat – Johnny Cash (Beck)

Already “Covered” in an Earlier Post

Galileo: Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C. ft. Aerosmith (Aerosmith)
The Dreaded Marco: The Promise - Sturgill Simpson (When In Rome)
Chaos34: That’s All Right - Elvis Presley (Arthur Crudup)

This episode also has T. Rex, whose members appear to be on lots of drugs.
Shocking, I know. I wasn't many years behind them, though.
The YouTube comments indicate that this was T. Rex's only American television appearance. (Which may explain why they played "old" songs Hot Love and Bang a Gong.) I guess they had something to "celebrate."

True, I’m probably being petty.

Didn’t have time on Tuesday, so it’s a Wednesday afternoon adventure with the #25s. This playlist was a pretty healthy mix of songs I know and versions I was experiencing for the first time. Enough that I decided to go 5 by 5 (after all, 5x5 = 25 >.>). Maybe just to show a bit more love today for some reason? Even with that, I had to leave some songs out, of course. My reasons for some of them are my own.

Recognized by title alone: 16
Sounded familiar: 5
Knew from this countdown: 1
Didn’t Know: 11

Selected Favorites:
Strawberry Letter 23 - Brothers Johnson
I’ve Done Everything for You - Rick Springfield
Easy - Faith No More
Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads
Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
The Man in Me - The Band of Heathens, Hayes Carll
Does Your Mother Know - Ash
Ain’t No Love In the Heart of the City - Black Pumas
Rave On - Steeleye Span
Frankenstein - Phish

One of their biggest influences was the Bay City Rollers, so yeah, I agree!

The #25s were not as kind to me as other playlists. There were more than usual that I already knew, but of those I didn't, I struck out more often than hit gold. Some exceptions:

"I'll Take Care of You" by a couple of people - Could figure this was simey's even if I hadn't known. I don't know the original, but this was beautiful.
The Dream Academy on the song with the long title - I've probably heard this one before but just hearted it now. It sounds more...wistful, maybe(?) than the original, while the original is more yearning? Something like that. Lovely in any case.
"Ain't No Love etc." by Black Pumas - Hmmm, I guess I didn't know either Bobby "Blue" Bland song. Or did I? Do I know any of his songs? What am I missing here? I need to find my brain.
"Tam Lin" by Fairport Convention - Another I might already know, but I no longer have a brain so can't say for sure. Great selection.

You couldn’t remember the name of the Smiths song? Did you not go to college????????!

Oh, I knew it but didn't want to type it. Obviously I went to college on the East Coast.
