The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (1 Viewer)

rue.

But you never know. Celebs sometimes look different out of the spotlight.

Is Hamilton Leithauser a celeb? Last I saw him he was playing for about twenty of us in Northampton, MA.

Also, Flop would have recognized Hamilton Leithauser. He's pretty distinctive.

But that was still a good guess. It could have been any of the Walkmen.
Celebrity is relative. 😀

26. Time Won't Let Me - The Smithereens (The Outsiders)
Also saw these guys not too long ago in an even smaller venue - The Wonder Bar.

They did not play this song but played a medley of songs from the era. Marshall Crenshaw handled vocals and Viki Peterson from the Bangles and her husband John Cowsill from the Cowsills sang backup most of the night. John sang a few leads.

Once again seeing professional bands that have played arenas, in small settings is always something to experience.
Love the Smithereens.

I only got to see them in concert one time and it was pretty great. It was Super Bowl Sunday night, 1990 (Niners/Broncos), and I had a med school final the next morning but I was not going to miss seeing them. It was a psych final, or maybe epidemiology, and I think I did pretty well (meaning, I passed) despite blowing off the night-before studying ritual.
Never seemed to get the chance to see them when I was younger and then I put the idea away when I got married and the kids came along. Things had finally gotten to the point when I could splurge on seeing them, but a month before they were due to play a gig near me, Pat passed away and they took a hiatus to figure out their next step. They've been by a few times since then, and even though I like Marshall Crenshaw, I don't know that anyone can really do Pat's voice justice.

Also, Flop would have recognized Hamilton Leithauser. He's pretty distinctive.

He only met the wife, not the actual guy.
X

"Had spoken with the dad a few times, a bit standoffish, but otherwise nice.. but only talked about tennis for a little" I'm think Flop had a Chazz Palminteri moment and dropped his coffee cup.
I’m sticking to my guess.

Leithauser is known to be a bit socially awkward or standoffish.

When were you last in Northampton? My son goes to college at UMass right nearby

Probably 2015 or so. I have moved to Southern California since. Northampton used to be sort of my stomping grounds, though I only know parts of it well. It was always for illicit stuff, so I never stopped and smelled the roses there. That's cool that your son goes to UMass. Amherst, I'm guessing. When I used to live in CT, I was right on the Massachusetts border. I'm more Western MA than stereotypical CT. People think of CT as the New York suburbs. I was nowhere near there. I was closer to Boston, actually.

Nice - yes, he’s at UMass-Amherst. Love it up there - so picturesque, especially in the fall. Never saw a show at The Academy of Music (presumably where you did), as my visits have been short, but seems like a pretty cool historic venue.

Just in the nick of time, I listened to the #26s and will also start to catch up on the last 30 hours of this thread!

The six-pointers were the best of times (mostly) and the worst of times ( 🐰 ) for me, with not much in between. Seemed like a lot more on the list that I already knew, but of those I didn't:

"I Am Not Willing" by Wilco and Syd Straw - don't know the original, but this was gorgeous. If I remember, I'll link another Syd Straw cover in a little bit.
"Many Rivers to Cross" by Colin Hay - It appears that this is from an entire album of covers by Hay, which I didn't know existed. Guess I know where I'll be spending my time. I only didn't take his acoustic version of "Overkill" because I took it in the worldwide countdown.
"Time Won't Let Me" by The Smithereens - I was happy to see this title as I knew this song would fit their vocals well.
"Angel Eyes" by The Czars - Another where I need to listen to the original, but standing on its own this was special.
"Such Great Heights" by Iron & Wine - Took me a long time to figure out I was listening to The Postal Service's song. That's a good credit to the cover IMO. Love the original and the cover.
"Suzanne" by Parasites - Combines two of my favorites: pop-punk stuff and Judy Collins Leonard Cohen.
"Can't Hardly Wait" by Justin Townes Earle - Well, duh, of course this would be my favorite.

I was going to post some teasers but got distracted. Oh well. I know there’s a surprising double-up original artist tomorrow, a surprising artist being both coverer and coveree, and a song that some dumdum spoiled in the last day or so.

Oh, and a cover of a solo Beatles song. No, not that Beatle. No, not that one either. No, not that one either.

Okay. Who covered "Octopus's Garden"?

11 randoms from batch #26. I like more than just these, but I'm limited for time catching up, and I wanted to choose some I had heard before and some I hadn't.

- The "I Am Not Willing" cover from Wilco and Syd Straw sounds close to the original, except I hear an organ in this one instead of a piano. I think this is the first cover I've ever heard of this song, and it sounds really good. A nice tip of the hat to Moby Grape.
- "Rollin' and Tumblin" is Muddy doing some of his muddy blues.
- The Smithereens tackle the 60's original of "Time Won't Let Me," and rock it a bit more than The Outsiders, but both versions are upbeat and good.
- I think "Angel Eyes" by The Czars is a lot better than the original Angeleyes by ABBA.
- "Proud Mary" by Ike and Tina Turner is my favorite version of the song. My favorite era of Tina's music is her time with awful Ike.
- "Walk On By" by The Stranglers sounds cool.
- Nina Simone puts her spin on "Nobody's Fault But Mine." Some of my favorite music by her is when it is just her voice and piano.
- Parasites' "Suzanne" is an adrenaline injected cover 🤘. It makes Leonard sound like grandpa.
- Justin Townes Earle has a nice take on the Replacements "Can't Hardly Wait."
- Sade makes Thin Lizzy's "Still In Love With You" as smooth as butter.
- This "Like a Prayer" cover by Bigod 20 is a techno music voice possessed romper. I remember hearing this at Visage when I lived in Orlando. People seemed to like it. 🙃 🎬

Partly a time-and-place thing for me, and partly because it is just cool.

I know many who like Shuggie's version better. I get why they feel that way. The Brothers Johnson's version has pretty much been steam-cleaned by Quincy Jones. It's lost all of its hippy-sloppiness. Plus, Shuggie Otis is kind of a mystery guy to most fans. That's way more attractive than a bunch of studio musicians being produced by the most studio-producer ever.

I am not one of those people. Shuggie's version is fine, but it can't hold up to the talent on display here.

Plus, it doesn't match up to the Brothers Johnson version being part of the soundtrack to me getting laid for the first time.

The Johnsons went onto greater fame - both on their own records and by playing on those by other artists. The bass you hear on much of Prime Michael Jackson is from Louis Johnson.

I took it in the last 5 out. I figured we’d see it again more than once.

25. She Comes in Colors - The Hooters (Love)

I only know this song because it was on the same mix tape as my #31 song, Gloomy Sunday by Peter Wolf, that my friend had made from his overwhelming record collection. This version appears on The Hooters' most famous album, Nervous Night.

Anyway, the original was released in 1966 and didn't chart, which seems unfortunate as it has a lot more going on in it than many pop songs of its time. Not saying it should have been a smash, but it should have at least charted. It's also a rumor turned fact that the song was the 'inspiration' for the Rolling Stones song She's a Rainbow, and that the Madonna song Beautiful Stranger from the Austin Powers soundtrack was a 're-working' of this song.

I completely blanked on this one — would’ve properly been a top-several for me. Glad it got selected and hopefully it’ll show a few more times yet.

I probably would have blanked on it too had Zegras not included it on his Petty list in one of the MAD countdowns.

Covers from #25 that I know and like and haven't mentioned before:

Strawberry Letter 23 - Brothers Johnson (Shuggie Otis) -- @Uruk-Hai, I too prefer the Brothers Johnson version, though I also love Shuggie's. The sheen that Quincy Jones provides is perfect for the song. I took this in a soul/funk/R&B song draft I did on another board.
It's My Life - No Doubt (Talk Talk) x2 -- Perfect pairing of song and cover artist.
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Guns N' Roses (Bob Dylan) -- @Instinctive should be happy. I saw GNR perform this on their 1988 tour opening for Aerosmith, 3 years before the Use Your Illusion albums came out. In the middle of this song, someone ran onstage, grabbed Axl's hat off his head, and dove back into the crowd. Axl being Axl, his response was to stop the song and bellow "GIVE ME BACK MY F###ING HAT!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Tam Lin - Fairport Convention (Traditional) -- I didn't really consider "traditional" source material, but Fairport would have been top of mind if I did.
I've Done Everything For You – Rick Springfield (Sammy Hagar) -- I had no idea this was a cover.
Knives Out - Flaming Lips (Radiohead) -- This is my favorite Radiohead song and the Lips are one of my favorite bands, so...
Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads (Simon and Garfunkel) -- Boppin'
Frankenstein - Phish (The Edgar Winter Group) -- I have seen this performed at several of my Phish shows, often as an encore. They generally play this pretty faithfully, in contrast to some of the other covers they perform.
Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds (The Limeliters) -- A landmark folk-rock song. Fantastic vocal arrangement.

My sister had Rick Springfields catalogue on cassette tape (along with Scott Baio's :x).

I was obligated to hate her music of course, but secretly liked this song (and Jesse's Girl) - if I knew it was a Sammy Hagar cover that could have given it some credibility (although I'm not much of a Haggar fan really).

Now that we're up to #25, time for some stats:

There are 8 instances of 6 songs on my list that have appeared on the lists so far. None of them are songs that have been revealed as my pick yet.

There is 1 instance of 1 song on my list that has appeared on the lists so far in a different cover version. We know that this is All Along the Watchtower. And I suspect there will be more where that came from.

26.

Song: The Man In Me

Artist: The Band of Heathens and Hayes Carll

Original Artist: Bob Dylan

Original song facts:

The song is most notably featured in the soundtrack to the 1998 Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. It plays during the stylized opening title sequence and during the hallucination sequence after the Dude is punched and his rug stolen.

Interesting facts about the cover:

No one reads this so let’s keep it simple: I love this song. I love The Band of Heathens and Hayes Carll.

The future Mrs. Eephus cut classes at Berkeley one day to hang out in North Beach where Springfield's movie Hard to Hold was being shot. I remember thinking this was really dumb at the time but it's kind of cute 40 years later.
