I’ve loved this song forever- didn’t know it was a cover. Have to admit it takes a little of the love away.
If you heard the original, it should restore your love for Huey’s cover. The crappy vocalist, as it turns out, is none other than producer extraordinaire Mutt Lange.

Nice - didn’t know this cover existed, or anyone covered this. My #2 Lizzy song from the last artist countdown. She did a really nice job here.
I don't think I've heard either of these songs before but this Sade cover is gorgeous. After listening to both, I prefer it to the original. Both quite good.

6 Points - Mickey - Toni Basil (Racey. Song was called Kitty)
Original

Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman had huge success in the UK and internationally with the Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Mud and Smokie. Moving to the late 70s, they finally struck major US success with Stumblin In by Suzi Q and Chris Norman, lead singer of Smokie. Then Kiss you all Over by Exile. By now Chapman was sick of Chinns shenanigans and had worked with Blondie solo, working his magic on Heart of Glass and Parallel Lines. Then Chinny/Chap did their last band for a full album. Racey. They were a 50s throwback band in look and sound. Lay Your Love on Me https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ofDCsRhT57o went to #3 in the UK and #1 in Australia. I fell in love with this song. I was only 10, but this song was the best I had ever heard at the time. The follow up Some Girls https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JY3pkagVP64&pp=ygUQcmFjZXkgc29tZSBnaXJscw== went to #2 in the UK and #1 again in Australia.
I HAD to get the album. I wore this thing out. By now a third single was due. Surely it had to be Kitty, the standout album track? Nope. Boy oh Boy got the nod and I was flabbergasted. Boy oh Boy reached #22 in the UK and #12 in Australia. Such a Night followed and didnt chart in the UK and reached #94 in Australia. Why didnt they release Kitty? I had moved on to other music by now. Then came along Mickey and I thought wtf? I KNEW it was a monster smash in 1979. What took you guys so long?

As an addendum, I was living in Melbourne by the mid nineties and Racey were playing a gig 200 metres from where i lived in a small club. I couldnt even be bothered going. You should have released Kitty guys.

Cover

Choreographer and Dancer, Toni Basil had been trying to have a music career since 1966. She did perform on Saturday Night Live in 1976, with Buck Henry as host, a song called “Wham Rebop Boom Bam”. But was fairly anonymous until this song landed in her lap. She passed on it initially, but something made her revisit it and she decided to add a cheerleading chant on it “Oh Mickey, you're so fine” and after every music exec said this was horrible, she finally got funding for a video, which she choreographed and got it released. MTV took it up and it eventually exploded. She toured the world, everyone knew her and she got paid a pittance for it. Two bottom end top 100 singles followed, but she is the true definition of a one hit wonder that the music industry screwed over.

6 Points - Angel Eyes - The Czars (Abba)
Original

This was released as a double a side with Voulez Vous, which weve already seen. The double A Side reached #3 in the UK but did stuff all elsewhere. It probably doesnt make my top 100 Abba songs, but the cover is good enough to sneak in.

Cover

The Czars are an american alternative rock act with 7 studio albums under their belt between 1994 and 2006. This cover of the Abba song was on their last LP from 2006 “Sorry I made you cry”. Interestingly the genders were not changed from what was a straight song for Abba, becomes a “gay” song for the Czars. NTTAWWT. The slowed down acoustics work well and it is better than the original IMHO. Maybe others like it better. If i liked the song itself it would rate much higher.

Cover artist: two votes – Nobody’s Fault But Mine (1); I Put a Spell on You (1)
Original artist: first vote
Very strong list. Liked almost all of them. But these are my favorite covers that I've never heard or at least not often.

Note to self: remember to listen to Nina Simone more often.

There are, of course, a million covers of Watchtower. But it's an important and symbolic device used in Battlestar Galactica - possibly my all time favorite show.

A lot was made about how the song could be heard by the show's characters but that's explainable by Dylan's quote on songwriting, "The songs are there. They exist all by themselves just waiting for someone to write them down. I just put them down on paper. If I didn't do it, somebody else would.'"

The jump coordinates that Kara Thrace deduces from the music are 1123,6536,5321. If treated as the notes of a Phrygian mode scale, with "1" representing the root note, a tune is played identical to that which is heard as Thrace keys in the jump coordinates

There are a few tracks that use the tune well in the score, particularly the last of these
A Distant Sadness
Heeding the Call
Kara Remembers
Kara's Coordinates

I was wondering if someone else was going to use that version of AATW. I just love it. I'm doing a rewatch of BSG right now that was partly motivated by my own cover list. Just got through the Season 3 finale which featured this song. Has to go down as one of the best season finales ever. The way they kept reciting lines of the song throughout the episode was such a mind**** at the time.

Big Tony Newley fan here--a huge talent with an absolutely bonkers singing style. This medley of his compositions performed with Sammy Davis Jr. is one of my favorite things on YouTube.

She also had a bit of an acting career - her most famous role was probably as a prostitute in Easy Rider, including the infamous cemetery acid trip scene.

Also just learned that she was a founding member of the ‘70s dance group The Lockers. Fred Berry (Rerun from What’s Happening) was also one of the founders.

26 - Suzanne - The Parasites (Judy Collins)

This is the song I was talking about earlier in the thread. An above-average pop/punk band covering a singer/songwriter classic. It was so far up my alley back then that I thought The Parasites were bringing a seriously literate touch to their California Ramones-esque delivery. I loved it and wondered how this wonderful song with its yearning lyrics wasn't getting a proper release on their album. Why was that? Welp, it's because Leonard Cohen wrote it and my ingenue ears didn't know it. But this was my introduction to Leonard (I had heard Hallelujah by Buckley but didn't know it was a cover), and it was a very warm one. Love these lyrics. Still kind of dig the pop/punk, actually. The Parasites make it work.

eta* Judy Collins was the first artist to record it though Cohen had written the lyrics in a poetry book, so The Parasites are technically covering her.

6.ee - Sade - "Still in Love with You" (cover of Thin Lizzy)

The original:
"Still in Love with You" is a slow burning Blues number that appeared on Thin Lizzy's fourth album Nightlife in 1974. The guitar solo was Gary Moore's last contribution to the band before leaving for the first time. The song wasn't a single but became a staple of their live set. There's an epic 7 1/2 minute version on 'Live and Dangerous' but I'm linking the studio version because it aligns better with the cover.

The cover: Sade recorded her version for a greatest hits compilation in 2011. She takes the song at a similar tempo to the original but smooths out the edges making it sound very much like a Sade original.

Is the cover better than the original?:
Sade is my queen and I love her entire catalog but I'm giving the nod to the original. Phil Lynott's vocal and the aforementioned guitar solo are a better match for the raw emotion of the lyrics than the cool sensuality of Sade's version.

Running scoreboard: Originals 4 - Covers 2

26. Time Won't Let Me - The Smithereens (The Outsiders)

This is where I wade into the "America's Band" discussion. The Smithereens, by their own reckoning (along with all their die-hard fans) have been America's Band Since 1980.

While they found their niche sound, they were also versed in rock's entire spectrum and if nothing else, they embodied the spirit of rock. Former lead singer Pat DiNizio (R.I.P.) 'toured' as a solo act, with the venues being the homes of fans who invited him in to perform. He had not problem throwing his gear into his car and heading out to do a one-man show, playing whatever his host requested.

This cover was part of the soundtrack for the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie Timecop, and they appeared together in this video.

The Smithereens made two cover albums, one of Beatles songs, and the other a track-for-track version of The Who's Tommy. No, none of those will appear later on; I compiled my list 'from the heart' and I never got around to these cover albums, so I'm not even including them for schtick's sake.

As for the song itself, the original version came out in 1966 and peaked at #5 on the charts. The Outsiders got their start in the late 50's under a different name in the Cleveland area, changing to The Outsiders upon leaving their original label for Capitol Records.

I heard the original long before the cover and like it better, but I love the energy that America's Band Since 1980 put into it.

#26 - I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (Arrows)
Original: Spotify ; Youtube

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Possibly twice already today. Seriously, I obviously enjoy the song, and I doubt when I listen to the playlist that I'll let it play three times. Anyway, like I said, this barely feels like a cover, in that this version has far overshadowed the original. I'm not positive that doing research was the first time I heard the Arrows version, but it might have been. Really, though, Joan (and company) didn't change a lot from the original. Heavy play of the video on MTV surely helped widen the gap of which one was known better. That said, I should probably leave some room for the two cool people who share this song at this spot.

There have been a lot of fantastic songs in this countdown, but I think I hit my first "HOLY **** this is great" moment in the #27s. More to come.

Sorry to take everyone in the way-back machine to Thursday, but I just finished the #27s. Though I was still going to limit it to covers I didn't already know, I started to try to do a simey-esque "compliment each song" and quickly remembered, when I got to saying stuff like "I'm sure he has worse songs," that simey will always be much nicer than I am.

Lots to  on the playlist, and really nothing I hated. Note that some songs could fit in multiple categories in my groupings below!

Favorite new-to-me covers, Ladies Bracket:
Bronze - "My One Desire" by Freakwater. Don't know this original, but I'm going out on a limb to say this cover is better.
Silver - "Llorando" by Rebekah del Rio. Ballsy to take on a song by one of the greatest vocalists who ever lived. She nailed it, and then some.
Gold - "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by Joan Baez. Sure, this doesn't stray far from the original, but it fits her voice so beautifully.

Favorite new-to-me covers, Don't You Go and **** this Up Bracket:
Bronze - "Come on Eileen" by Save Ferris. It's not like I love the original that much, but I could see it going off the rails. The ska adaptation was perfect.
Silver - "Bennie & The Jets" by Hickoids. I think of the Elton version as such a sneaky-heavy song, and this version played up that heaviness really well.
Gold - "She Said She Said" by the Black Keys. You come with a Beatles cover, you best not miss. They didn't. Love the vocal and the guitar sound. Again a heavy song that was made even heavier to great effect.

Favorite new-to-me covers, Surprised This Cover Didn't Suck Bracket:
Bronze - "I See You" by Yes. I don't know the original but think I don't like Yes. I might be wrong. This was good.
Silver - "Big River" by The Grateful Dead. Over the past few years I come to appreciate enough Dead songs (thanks to shuke and others) that I shouldn't put them in the "surprised this didn't suck" bracket, but old habits die hard.
Gold - "Caravan" by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. I'm wired to hate his stuff, but this was very well done. Maybe my wiring is crossed.

Favorite new-to-me covers, Don't Know the Original Bracket:
Bronze - "From the Beginning" by Dokken. Whaddya know, I like Dokken.
Silver - "Mystic Eyes" by Tom Petty et al. That bass. Oh! That bass!
Gold - "Circles" by Of Monsters and Men. This is where you all say "how do you not know that original?"

Overall Best in Show!
Bronze - "Sweetheart Like You" by Craig Finn. I listen to the playlists in order, so when I hit this early on, I said, "Nothing's going to be better than this."
Silver - "Matte Kudasai" by Kurt Elling. Oops, sorry Craig Finn. I need more Kurt Elling in my life instead. This is going to be the clear winner.
Gold - "So. Central Rain" by Grant-Lee Phillips. HOLY ****.

I was kind of letting this slide, because it's Leonard Cohen, but he actually didn't have the first release of "Suzanne." My favorite song in the M-aD worldwide countdown actually, in fact, belongs to Judy Collins. I'm going to update the data accordingly.

Indeed that is true. Leonard wrote it and published it in a poetry book of his, but Collins recorded the first version. I'd totally forgotten.

Ok, here's my breakdown of the 6 pointers

Summer Breeze- I think I've heard this before but I for sure like it a lot. Excellent choice

Tainted Love - One of the all time examples of a band covering a song and just forever making it their song

I Am Not Willing- Not familiar with the original but hard to imagine it's better than this

Rolling and Tumblin'- Every rock artist who recorded a version of this should be a little embarrassed (there's a lot of good versions of this song but Muddy Waters is a bad dude)

Angel Eyes- really nice gentle cover, this is how you do it

Do You Believe in Love- I can't lie, Huey did his thing here

Still in Love with You- Sade is unimpeachable

Walk on By- a jam for sure, I especially like the back half where the band just rips. I am here for the organ and damn, the bass on this slays

Suzanne- that's some good rock and roll for sure, not sure what year this is but it feels like an inspiration to all the punk bands covering songs that I grew up with in the late 90s and early aughts

Can't Hardly Wait- groovy

Nobody's Fault But Mine- the high priestess doesn't miss

Proud Mary- yeah, this blows CCR out of the water

OH tally:

OH cover songs I have heard of: 0
OH original songs I have heard of: 0

OH original artists I have heard of: 4

This is the second time I have heard of both the original artist and the cover artist in the same selection. I only know a handful of songs from either. Still no familiar songs but krista promises me that's changing so we'll see...

I'm going with a stone-cold rock-solid guarantee you'll know the cover versions in his nine-pointer and 11-pointer. Before that...maybe? You'll at least know the originals, though.

I mean imagine thinking you are a man and can do a blues based rock song better than the guy who did Mannish Boy. You truly have lost touch with reality.

What artists do you consider a song killer? In the sense that if they touch it, it's over. They own it now.
