The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (2 Viewers)

5 point round, a lot great stuff.

Huge fan, didn't know it was a cover:
titusbramble: It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork (Betty Hutton)

Wasn't familiar with original but really enjoyed:
Chaos34: Circles - Of Monsters And Men (Post Malone)

Other favorites:
Pip’s Invitation: I See You – Yes (The Byrds)
Dr. Octopus: Sweetheart Like You – Craig Finn (Robert Zimmerman)
Just Win Baby: Mystic Eyes - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Them)
zamboni: People Are Strange - Echo & The Bunnymen (The Doors)
Ilov80s: I Put a Spell on You - Nina Simone (Screamin' Jay Hawkins)
The Dreaded Marco: So. Central Rain - Grant-Lee Phillips (R.E.M.)
New Binky the Doormat: She Said She Said - The Black Keys (The Beatles)
Scoresman: See Emily Play - David Bowie (Pink Floyd)Song: first vote
Mister CIA: Bennie & The Jets – Hickoids (Elton John)
landrys hat: Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - First Aid Kit (Fleet Foxes)
higgins: From the Beginning - Dokken (ELP)
krista4: I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow – Alison Krauss & Union Station (traditional)

Covers from #26 that I know and like and haven't already mentioned:

Summer Breeze - Isley Brothers (Seals and Crofts*) -- I am very high on this one.
Tainted Love - Soft Cell (Gloria Jones) -- Ubiquitous on AM radio when I was a tween.
Forever Young – Pretenders (Robert Zimmerman) -- I think this Zimmerman fellow may have a nice songwriting career ahead of him.
The Sky Is Crying - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (Elmore James)
Rollin’ and Tumblin’ - Muddy Waters (Hambone Willie Newbern) -- I had no idea this was a cover. Like most white American Gen Xers, I first heard this song via Cream. Figured Muddy was the original.
I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (Arrows) x3 -- I figured this would show up but certainly wasn't expecting thrice in one playlist. I did know the story of how Jett encountered this song by a band that got zero traction in the US and was performing it when she was still in the Runaways.
Do You Believe In Love - Huey Lewis & The News (Supercharge) -- I had no idea this was a cover.
Mickey - Toni Basil (Racey) -- Ditto. In neither case does this make me think less of the song.
Just Like Heaven - Dinosaur Jr. (The Cure)
Walk On By - The Stranglers (The Supremes) -- I only knew this because JML had it in his Stranglers top 31 in the MAD 1 countdown.
Pressure Drop - Izzy Stradlin And The Ju Ju Hounds (The Maytals) -- I loved Izzy's contributions to the Use Your Illusion albums. When the first Ju Ju Hounds album came out not long after he left GNR, I rushed to pick it up. Unfortunately it had only two tracks I liked. This was one of them. Some people are better off staying as Mic #2, I guess.
Superstition - Stevie Ray Vaughn (Stevie Wonder) -- Jeff Beck showed how this song can be a guitarist's dream, and Stevie Ray took that notion even further.
Nobody’s Fault But Mine - Nina Simone (Blind Willie Johnson) -- I had no idea she recorded this until DQ featured her in one of the MAD countdowns.
Proud Mary – Tina and Ike Turner (Creedence Clearwater Revival) -- A tour de force. No matter how rough it is.

* -- @krista4 -- as someone more familiar with yacht rock than you, note I have corrected the spelling of the original artist

Mickey - Toni Basil (Racey) -- Ditto. In neither case does this make me think less of the song.

I only learned this was a cover when JML sent it in. Loved reading the background he provided on it.

* -- @krista4 -- as someone more familiar with yacht rock than you, note I have corrected the spelling of the original artist

As with "Creedence/Credence," I'm just going with what people gave me, so no corrections are necessary. In the prior M-aD countdowns, I had to correct everything because our GB falguy needed song and artist names to be precise for purposes of tabulation of the stats. Here, we go with what y'all submit, and I'm not going to make updates.

This is what I'm here for:
Pip’s Invitation: I Am Not Willing - Wilco and Syd Straw (Moby Grape)
Ilov80s: Such Great Heights – Iron & Wine (The Postal Service)
landrys hat: Can't Hardly Wait - Justin Townes Earle (Replacements)

Unfamiliar with original but really liked:
Don Quixote: Rollin’ and Tumblin’ - Muddy Waters (Hambone Willie Newbern)

Other favorites:
titusbramble: Tainted Love - Soft Cell (Gloria Jones)
Galileo: Mama Tried - Grateful Dead (Merle Haggard)
The Dreaded Marco: Just Like Heaven - Dinosaur Jr. (The Cure)
higgins: Ma - Rare Earth (The Temptations)
krista4:
Proud Mary – Tina and Ike Turner (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

Had no clue this was a cover:
simsarge/Scoresman/Mt. Man: I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (Arrows)
zamboni: Do You Believe In Love - Huey Lewis & The News (Supercharge)
John Maddens Lunchbox: Mickey - Toni Basil (Racey)

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay

And true it may seem like a stretch
But it's thoughts like this that catch
My troubled head when you're away
And when I am missing you to death

Some of the most beautiful lyrics ever written imo

Pip’s Invitation:

I Am Not Willing - Wilco and Syd Straw (Moby Grape)

This is one of my very favorite unheralded songs of the '60s. I ranked it #7 in my 1969 countdown. Here is what I said there -- the link to the original is in that blurb:

7. I Am Not Willing -- Moby Grape (from Moby Grape '69)

1968 was totally chaotic for Moby Grape, as I described in entry #51. In addition to the financial, commercial and mental-illness-related drama described there, Peter Lewis had a whole 'nother layer to deal with. His marriage had fallen apart and apparently the divorce process was prolonged and insane, to the extent that he had to spend a lot of time away from the band in '68. He only contributed one song to their second album, Wow, and does not appear at all on the bonus album packaged with Wow, Grape Jam.

When it came time to put together Moby Grape '69, Lewis brought a song into which he had poured out all his feelings about his ex's betrayal. Set to a stately, sympathetic country rock backing, I Am Not Willing is one of the great singer/songwriter confessional songs, which happened to appear on a poor-selling album by a band with four other songwriters. The lyrics are just heart wrenching:

Said she loves me
She won't forget me
Then she's gone

She thinks that later
We could pick up the pieces
And carry on

&

This has always been a very significant song for me because it echoes what I went through in my first marriage. To this day, I have a hard time listening to it without getting emotional.

I first listened to Moby Grape when a compilation album called Vintage was released in the early '90s. Due to the complete clusterf*ck that was the business/finance/management side of their career, all their albums were out of print and this was the only way to acquire their songs. I had read much praise for their debut album, which was included on the compilation in its entirety, and so I decided to pick up the release. The songs from the debut are indeed excellent, but the one that really struck me was I Am Not Willing, which I will put up against anything from the singer-songwriter movement of the late '60s and early '70s. And I felt this way BEFORE I underwent some of what the song describes at the end of my first marriage. Afterwards, well, it turns me into a pile of jelly every time I hear it.

The compilation didn't do much to raise the profile of Moby Grape (and in fact became part of the complete clusterf*ck that was their business/finance/management side, which is why it too fell out of print) and I never thought I would hear the song again unless I broke out my copy and played it (I had not conceived of the concept of streaming). Then, in the early '00s, when I was trading CD-Rs of live shows and unreleased material with strangers and acquaintances from the internet, I traded for a Wilco disc labeled "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot outtakes". Much to my surprise, there was a cover of I Am Not Willing, performed with Syd Straw. From the time I acquired a promo copy of the final Uncle Tupelo album in my first year as a newspaper reporter and went to see UT on their final tour, Jeff Tweedy seemed to me like a guy who had a similar attitude toward music as I did, and the decision to cover this certainly confirmed it. Turns out it was actually recorded around the time of the first Wilco album, A.M.; another collaboration with Straw, a cover of Ernest Tubb's "The T.B. is Whipping Me," was recorded at the same time and appeared on the compilation Red Hot & Country. The I Am Not Willing cover finally got an official release in 2014 on the 4-disc box set of Wilco rarities Alpha Mike Foxtrot.

The Wilco/Straw version sticks pretty close to the Moby Grape version except for being a bit twangier. I saw one writeup that said it sounds like something Gram Parsons would have done, and that is as high a praise as anything I could say about it. As good as the performance is, this is the only song on my list that is not here for that reason. It is here because I remain amazed that anyone thought to cover this lost masterpiece at all.

At #25, what may be the greatest "all star jam" ever.

New-to-me covers from #26 that I very much enjoyed:

Many Rivers To Cross – Colin Hay (Jimmy Cliff) -- Excellent vocal, whoda thunk the Men at Work guy could pull it off.
Mama Tried - Grateful Dead (Merle Haggard) -- I'm not much of a Dead fan for reasons I won't get into. But this was done really well.
Time Won't Let Me - The Smithereens (The Outsiders) -- This sounded exactly how I expected it to sound. The Smithereens are reliable in that way.
Angel Eyes - The Czars (Abba) -- Lovely
Such Great Heights – Iron & Wine (The Postal Service) -- Also lovely
Still in Love with You - Sade (Thin Lizzy) -- Extra lovely. Stunning, in fact. I checked out the original, which is awesome too.
Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) - Dave Matthews Band (Sly and the Family Stone) -- This may be a hot take but I think I prefer latter-day DMB, with Tim Reynolds in the band, to their "classic" lineup. They have more grit. Comes through well here. Also helping is that Dave doesn't try to replicate Sly's vocal and comes up with a different approach that works for him. I've noted this about Paul Weller's best soul covers (solo or with The Jam) as well.
All Along The Watchtower – Bear McCreary (Bob Dylan) -- Just when you thought there weren't any more ways to reinvent this song...
Suzanne – The Parasites (Leonard Cohen) -- I dug the energy here
Can't Hardly Wait - Justin Townes Earle (Replacements) -- Doesn't stray too far from the original, but Earle makes it distinctive enough
Ma - Rare Earth (The Temptations) -- I saw this was 17 minutes and was dreading it, since the side-long album version of their cover of Get Ready is horrid. (Apologies if anyone picked it for a later playlist.) But this was pretty cool. It helped that they had a better guitar player by this point (4 years after Get Ready). Listening to it late at night was definitely the right choice. It kept my brain spinning in all the good ways.
Train From Kansas City - Superchunk (The Shangri-La’s) -- Seemed noisy at the beginning before settling into something pretty compelling.

I may need one of those Rob Lowe “NFL” hats. Just rooting for a good game.
Years ago while touring a new NFL stadium I looked at the usually overpriced stuff in their merchandise shop. Found in the 5 dollar clearance bin an "NFL Equipment" hat complete with the always protected shield. Came in handy back when the local team gear wasn't something I wanted to be seen in.

Song: Forever Young

Artist: Pretenders

Original Artist: Bob Dylan

Original song facts:

"Forever Young" is a song by Bob Dylan, recorded in California in November 1973. The song first appeared, in two different versions, a slow-pace and a fast-pace, on Dylan's fourteenth studio album Planet Waves. Written as a lullaby for his eldest son Jesse, born in 1966, Dylan's song relates a father's hopes that his child will remain strong and happy.

Interesting facts about the cover:

Pretenders’ version of this song appeared on the soundtracks of “Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home” and “With Honors”. Two movies I have never seen.

On this most sacred of football Sundays, here are my favorite 6 point plays:

Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Forever Young - The Pretenders
The Sky Is Crying - SRV 🎸
Time Won't Let Me - The Smithereens
Angel Eyes - The Czars
Just Like Heaven - Dinosaur Jr
Walk On By - The Stranglers
Proud Mary - Tina and Ike Turner

You Don't Bring Me Flowers - Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Neil Diamond)

My first concert was Neil Diamond at MSG in 1985; my father and stepmother took me and my siblings. He performed this, with his backup singer filling in for Barbra.
My first two concerts that I went to were both in the summer of 1977. One was Neil Diamond and the other Englebert Humperdinck. Think Englebert was first.

Well, the #26s were a bit different. I mean, obviously every list is different. But being part of a Menage-a-Falala-Trois was unexpected (but cool, of course). Along with that come a few songs that appear on my list later, and…well, you’ll see the special category below. It probably won’t appear often, but we’ll see. With that, it made the “hadn’t heard” section a tight battle while favorites were a bit thinner after “trimming” them.

Recognized by title alone: 19
Sounded familiar: 3
Didn’t Know: 11

Selected Favorites:
The Sky is Crying - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Do You Believe in Love - Huey Lewis & The News. Add me to the “didn’t know this was a cover” crowd.
Hey Mickey - Toni Basil. Not to “ditto”, but ditto.
Across the Universe - Scorpions

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
I am Not Willing - Wilco, Syd Straw
Many Rivers to Cross - Colin Hay
Angel Eyes - The Czars
Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine

Subsection: Knew primarily from other M-AD countdowns:
Walk On By - The Stranglers
Nobody’s Fault by Mine - Nina Simone

Having no idea how this worked or what happened, but being interested in finding good songs, I was surprised to see no Sympathy for the Devil on here (Guns n Roses, originally Rolling Stones). In a similar vein, some others GnR covers that are awesome: Live and Let Die (Wings originally?), and Knockin on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan?).

Only 5 of everyone's 31 have been revealed so there are 100's of chances for them to still appear

6. Still 100s of chances for the desired covers to show up. Though probably not from OH since he picks stuff I haven't heard of.

Aw jeez, Danny, you didn't. Danny, I told you we weren't done yet. Aw, get on over here you young lad and pull up a seat and let me tell you a story . . .

:Irish guy:

Was a long time ago . . .

I just saw them about two weeks ago and they played this as the encore.
How was the show?
I’ll start with saying I’ve liked them since they broke and I saw J. Mascis solo acoustic at Maxwell’s in Hoboken about 25 years ago - but I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan and I don’t really know his songs.

@KarmaPolice got me interested in seeing them/him with his countdown and this show was supposed to be in September but was postponed due to an illness.

With that said, I didn’t know any songs except Just Like Heaven encore (and some that sounded familiar) and there’s no real song structure or melodies anyway - more of an excuse for them to jam. So in that light that worked well live and the sound was great. Stone Pony holds about 990 inside and it was packed and crowd was into it. It’s great seeing professional bands in small venues.

Damn if the #27s weren't a total tour de force from the very start. On the other hand, it also delved into 🐰 territory for me a couple of times with well-regarded covers of bands I love done by other bands I love (or at least like). And that's enough about that...

Songs That I Knew the Cover and the Original

Uruk-Hai: Summer Breeze - Isley Brothers (Seals and Croft)
simsarge/Scoresman/Mt. Man: I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (Arrows)
landrys hat: Can't Hardly Wait - Justin Townes Earle (Replacements)
DrIanMalcolm: Superstition - Stevie Ray Vaughn (Stevie Wonder)
krista4: Proud Mary – Tina and Ike Turner (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

Songs That I Only Know the Original but Really Enjoyed the Cover

Galileo: Mama Tried - Grateful Dead (Merle Haggard) - Given my bad experiences with hippies, shocked to like a Dead cover. Still, would have enjoyed the irony if they did Okie from Muskogee instead.
rockaction: Suzanne – The Parasites (Leonard Cohen)

Song I Like That I Only Know the Cover but not the Original

titusbramble: Tainted Love - Soft Cell (Gloria Jones) - eephus beat me to the punch on this. The medley is like those old Reeses commercials when PB gets introduced to chocolate.
zamboni: Do You Believe In Love - Huey Lewis & The News (Supercharge) - count me as another who unaware this was a cover. Will any Huey/Gwyneth takes from the Duets soundtrack show up?

Songs I Like That I Didn't Know Either Version

Pip’s Invitation: I Am Not Willing - Wilco and Syd Straw (Moby Grape)
simey: Many Rivers To Cross – Colin Hay (Jimmy Cliff)
Charlie Steiner: Time Won't Let Me - The Smithereens (The Outsiders) - I don't think I've ever heard a Smithereens song I don't like
Eephus: Still in Love with You - Sade (Thin Lizzy)

Already “Covered” in an Earlier Post

Doug B: You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt (Dee Dee Warwick)

we are only 5 songs in dude ...

26. Time Won't Let Me - The Smithereens (The Outsiders)
Also saw these guys not too long ago in an even smaller venue - The Wonder Bar.

They did not play this song but played a medley of songs from the era. Marshall Crenshaw handled vocals and Viki Peterson from the Bangles and her husband John Cowsill from the Cowsills sang backup most of the night. John sang a few leads.

Once again seeing professional bands that have played arenas, in small settings is always something to experience.

I don't know how much 'fraternization' goes on behind the scenes, but I'm impressed with the elbows the Smithereens have rubbed over the years: Marshall Crenshaw and Robbin Wilson of The Gin Blossoms take turns fronting them; their drummer has toured multiple times with Dave Davies, the list of performers who showed up for the Pat DiNizio tribute show after his death included the aforementioned artists as well as Scandal's lead singer Patty Smyth, as well as The Fleshtones among others and was hosted by Steven Van Zandt. As an added bonus, at the end of the show, they not only played their underrated White Castle Blues as an encore, they also passed out bags of White Castle Burgers to the crowd.

Love the Smithereens.

I only got to see them in concert one time and it was pretty great. It was Super Bowl Sunday night, 1990 (Niners/Broncos), and I had a med school final the next morning but I was not going to miss seeing them. It was a psych final, or maybe epidemiology, and I think I did pretty well (meaning, I passed) despite blowing off the night-before studying ritual.

Btw... Was talking to a mom at floppinhas tennis class last night. What do you guys do, etc, but more involved over two hours. Had spoken with the dad a few times, a bit standoffish, but otherwise nice.. but only talked about tennis for a little.

So the mom and I talking the entire 2 hours... Mostly about our kids and living in NYC. She explains what she does.. artistic director of podcasts and lots of other stuff (creative type). And the dad? Oh... Singer song writer. Cool... Is that his work or his hobby? Work. That's amazing! I mention floppinho... And how cool it is to make a run of things in music. Yeah, he loves it... Was in a band first. Cool.. what's the band?

You all know the band. And you all know the guy, who has had a great solo career. I was gobstruck.

Do tell.......

Or let's guess. Give us a clue.

Ah! It did come off as a guessing game... Hadn't thought that through. I don't intend to say who it is just yet... Floppinha may be playing more with her, and considering they're similar and nice, hopefully we get to know them a little in some small way. Doesn't feel right blabbing just yet. If we all go out separate ways, I'll be sure to say.

I was initially thinking Patty Smyth/John McEnroe, except obviously it would be in reverse here with the mom as the singer/songwriter. Although Mac would certainly qualify as standoffish.

That's quite a tease if you aren't planning to give us the answer. Are you thinking he is one of us participating in the countdown?

Hmmm... Maybe?

I posted about the loud sexy time my new neighbor was making... A guy who's an Emmy award winning TV guy... And included who he was. I've always felt ****ty about doing that, so even though I was super excited about this and to share it with music friends, I'm going to wait.

Eta... And his music, band and solo, is square in my wheelhouse. Both have been drafted repeatedly here in the FFA.
