The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (3 Viewers)

Eephus:

Tupelo Honey - Cassandra Wilson (Van Morrison)
This is my favorite Morrison song. It's pretty much a perfect record for me.

Wilson - who is Roberta Flack 2.0 according to my tastes - torches the hell out of it.

I had Cassandra Wilson covers on my list until the very last minute, when I took it/them off because I simply couldn't decide which one to include. Most likely would have gone with "The Weight."

I'm just listening to it again now and should have included it, and possibly pretty high on my list. That phrasing!!

We need to start over.

Damn it, I forgot this on my favorites list. Please consider added.

Cool. Glad you liked it.

I actually have always pictured you as shy. Weird. Internetting is weird.

No doubt. I just typed a few sentences and realized I had nothing profound to say about it, so I just erased them. All I can say is that it took me quite a long time to get used to this form of communication, and now I'm aware that it has limitations. But I also like it a great deal (otherwise I wouldn't be here having a good time with it). Sometimes real life causes people to be more passive and neither voice their thoughts nor act like their true self, so the internet can actually be a boon for assessing some truths about those who would otherwise choose not to speak in real life. It can benefit both speaker and listener at times.

At the gate at BWI getting ready to board a flight to London. Downloaded the playlist - for once I wish it was about 2 hours longer (maybe a Phish-only one would get me thru the flight?) In the meantime, I'll never understand what compels people to talk on speaker in public spaces. Sure that's been talked to death in the pet peeves thread.

As for my pick today, there's a lot of Mountain Goats covers out there but most of them don't land for me. Bands tend to lean into the darkness and ignore how wonderfully droll John D can be. I'm not a ska fan at all, but for some reason, the big horns and bouncy beats of this cover were a perfect complement to "I hope you die, I hope we both die."

Soooooo looking forward to this one!

New-to-me covers from #16 that I very much enjoyed:

This Wheel’s on Fire – Siouxsie and the Banshees (Robert Zimmerman) -- Very much transformed into a Siouxie jawn; more evidence of how malleable Dylan's best songs are.
Take These Chains from My Heart – Ray Charles (Hank Williams) -- You just wanna hug him, ya know?
Eagle - Peter Joback (Abba) -- This song has good bones.
Tupelo Honey - Cassandra Wilson (Van Morrison) -- Gorgeous.
Personal Jesus - Marilyn Manson (Depeche Mode) -- A little more obvious than his Eurythmics cover or than Def Leppard's version of this song, but it still delivers.
Carry On a Wayward Son – Anthrax (Kansas) -- Holy hell, this was awesome. I was not expecting it to sound so close to the original -- only the vocal was a giveaway. I certainly wasn't expecting to hear organ in an Anthrax song.
A Song for You - The Carpenters (Leon Russell) -- Karen always does great when she has excellent material, which is the case here.
MacArthur Park - Donna Summer (Richard Harris) -- This song is ridiculous but Donna sings it as if her life depends on it.
The Freshman - Mustard Plug (The Verve Pipe) -- The Thumper Rule prevents me from sharing my true feelings about the original. To hear a version that makes me feel better about it is nice.
The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Steve Lukather (Traffic) -- Fascinating, especially because there is no guitar in the Traffic original. All those freaky noises were Chris Wood's electric saxophone. Lukather plays those, as well as the "normal" saxophone parts, on guitar, making this cover hugely distinctive despite otherwise following the original pretty closely. It's too bad this didn't come earlier in his career, because his voice here doesn't even faintly have the power of Steve Winwood's. His late 70s/early 80s singing voice would probably have acquitted itself better.

As for this one:

Lost Continent - Joel RL Phelps and the Downer Trio (Comsat Angels)

I don't hate it, but I'm not sure if I like it. The vocal is weird but fascinating.

Just checking this thread out on a whim… is there a search feature I can use to look up a song title to see if it’s been chosen? I’ve got a few in mind & was curious to see if any of y’all have picked any that have come to mind. Thanks.

Yes. Go up to the magnifying class on the upper right of the webpage and click. Type in your query and select “this thread only” or whatever wording they use. Hit enter. Voila!

The cake is a metaphor

I won't stand for people blaspheming the legend Jimmy Webb.
I'm just gonna assume that Jimmy was jonesing for some cake when he wrote the lyrics. There are so many metaphors to use regarding the ending of a relationship, but leaving a cake out in the rain isn't one I'd use. Jimmy was either craving cake, or he screwed up a recipe or something making one, and the disaster made its way in to the lyrics of the song. Donna Summer to the rescue! By the way, I like Donna Summer's version of the song. I'm just picking on the lyrics, and lyrically the cake part is my favorite part in the lyrics cause it's so dumb that it's fun to sing.

- I like this sped up version of "The Freshman" by Mustard Plug. I like it better than the original.
- I've always liked this mellow yellow version of "Sweet Jane" by Cowboy Junkies. I'm a big fan of The Trinity Session album.
- The "Mr. Tambourine Man" cover by The Byrds is a goldie oldie favorite. The song reminds me of a Cheers episode where Frasier hypnotizes Lilith with certain words. The word "tambourine" makes Lilith start removing her shirt. The barflies start messing with her by playing Mr. Tambourine Man on the jukebox.
- This cover of "The Low Spark of High Heel Boys" by Steve Lukather is good.
- James Burton's instrumental cover of "Polk Salad Annie" is 🤙

From songfacts.com:

Jimmy Webb, who wrote the song, explained in Q magazine: "It's clearly about a love affair ending, and the person singing it is using the cake and the rain as a metaphor for that. OK, it may be far out there, and a bit incomprehensible, but I wrote the song at a time in the late 1960s when surrealistic lyrics were the order of the day."

The love affair Webb speaks of was with Suzy Horton, who in 1993 married Linda Ronstadt's cousin, Bobby. Said Webb (in the Los Angeles Times), "MacArthur Park was where we met for lunch and paddleboat rides and feeding the ducks. She worked across the street at a life insurance company. Those lyrics were all very real to me - there was nothing psychedelic about it to me. The cake, it was an available object. It was what I saw in the park at the birthday parties. But people have very strong reactions to the song. There's been a lot of intellectual venom."

You have to take it over the top when you're writing a song for the vocal stylings of Richard Harris

I wonder if it's the same Suzy/Susie who's the title character of Webb's "Where's the Playground Susie?"

- I like Marilyn Manson's cover of "Personal Jesus." His style sounds good on this song.
- Karen and Richard do their carpentry on Leon Russell's "A Song For You," and they build it into a lovely sounding Carpenters' song. Leon wrote some great songs.
- Jimi's version of "The Star Spangled Banner" is far out, man. 🇺🇸 If I were in the Olympics, I'd want this version played when I stand on that podium with my 🥇
-Rita Lee's cover of "Minha Vida (In My Life)" sounds purty.
- Jerry Butler's cover of the beautiful "Moon River" makes me miss my grandparents.
- Phish's cover of "Crosseyed and Painless" expresses the quirkiness of the Talking Heads.
- I much prefer George Harrison's cover of "If Not for You" over Dylan's original. I consider it a George song.
- I like Sad Snack's energized version of "No Children." With the upbeatness of this cover, it's not as obvious as the original that the lyrics are pretty dark.
- This "Cortez the Killer" cover by Built to Spill is good stuff. Love the 🎸
- Battlefield Band's cover of "Bad Moon Rising / The Rising Moon Reel" makes me want to clog. 🤠

ANNOUNCE: I'm putting together tomorrow's list and realized I effed up @titusbramble 's pick in the last round. Instead of "Feeling Good," it should have been:

Can't Take My Eyes off of You - Muse (Frankie Valli)

I'll update the post, with apologies. @Hawks64, could you amend the playlist when you have a moment?

UPDATE: Loved it!!!!

Two Deja Votes tomorrow, both for songs we've seen before. We also have the first appearances of two heavy-hitters that I'd thought could battle for the overall "favorite" title before we got started. Maybe they still will. :gang2:

Also, this:
Bet I'm one of those. I assumed that going in.

I had a harder day before starting to listen to the #16s. But soon enough, I was closer to Feeling Good than Crosseyed and Painless. I don’t just say that to reference songs, but it helps. (Also, I wrote this before the Muse song changed, but I'm not restructuring that sentence....). Regardless, it was a good opportunity to listen to music, and of course the playlist had many things for me to enjoy. Below are just a few of them

Recognized by title alone: 21
Sounded famili.ar: 4
Didn’t Know: 9
(mine - 1)

Selected Favorites:
Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
Crossroads - Cream
The Boys of Summer - The Ataris
Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
Minha Vida - Rita Lee
Dancing in the Dark - Hot Chip
Carry On My Wayward Son - Anthrax
Rising Moon Reel - Battlefield Band
The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys - Steve Lukather

Last night's Survivor episode showed a glimpse of what any of us would do if we got on the show. To pass the time, a Swiftie and a Metallica fan had a "battle" to see who could name more songs by their favorite artist.

They both got over 100. The Swiftie won because the Metallica fan hadn't memorized all the song titles from their bad albums. He cited the collaboration with Lou Reed, Lulu, as a specific example.

That's awesome. I always thought Lou Reed was taking the piss out of Metallica, but then I heard Metal Machine Music and the story behind it and about it. I'm no longer convinced that Lou was being ironic with that Metallica album. He might very well have been trying to create a great album with Hetfield and company.

I think the more I listened to Lou's solo stuff the more I came to the conclusion that he really gave it a go. When Lou failed, he failed spectacularly. I mean, I just listened to "Coney Island Baby" the other night. I love it, but it really teeters on the edge of just being some bad, overwrought stuff. It saves itself, but the potential is there. It further cemented in my mind that Lulu could have just been really and earnestly bad.

- Cassandra Wilson's cover of "Tupelo Honey" is great. Her voice really shines on her cover, and I like that violin that makes an appearance.
- John Denver's original "Take Me to Tomorrow" is fast and groovy, and Dave Matthews changes it up and slows it down and it works great.
- On Joel R. L. Phelps & The Downer Trio's cover of "Lost Continent," I like the drums, and I think the vocal approach goes well with the tempo and arrangement of the song. The original has that 80s sound. Both are good.
- The Ataris gives "Boys of Summer" a shot of adrenaline in their cover, and it's a great result. I actually heard this one on the radio yesterday.
- Elvis rock 'n' rolls "Hound Dog" in his cover, and it was huge for its time. For me, Elvis' version vs Big Mama's original, Big Mama wins it easily.
- Siouxie and the Banshees cover of "This Wheels on Fire" is very good, and I dig that outro.
- Cream's live cover of "Crossroads" is guitar goodness. 🎸 This song reminds me of college and incense.
- Hot Chip turns "Dancing in the Dark" into an electronica dance song with their cover. 💃
- I've always liked Tesla's live version of "Signs." I heard a new version just now...

and the sign said
"Our Octopus is missing,
He may have swam away"
the enforcers around in this internet town
their judgement has gone astray
So I got a pen and paper
and I made up my own little sign
I said, "Enforcer Hall, I'm talkin' to y'all
you're irrational on what is unkind"

What sucks is that this is the only recorded version, there are a ton of live versions both full band and Dave & Tim that are sooo much better.

My metalhead friend from high school thinks Lulu is appallingly bad. So it's clearly not for everyone.
