I will never forgot that commercial, because the first time I saw it, it was played back-to-back, immediately following a Nyquil commercial where a similar looking guy took some Nyquil to get a good nights sleep. It rolled over into the Burger King ad and not knowing it was not the same commercial was saying to myself "WTF, is this what you get from taking Nyquil?" before I realized this was for a different product.

You are on to something though with the New Coke reference. They did the same thing, replacing something popular with something terrible, and then making amends with a better (but still not original) replacement. All part of the master plan.
