The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (2 Viewers)

91 (tie). The Untouchables
shuke - #38

Very surprised to not see this in the other thread or the other lists.
First movie posted so far that made my list (75). I thought we would get some heat for it missing but I guess people just don’t like this movie much. Can’t believe it ended up this low here too. It’s definitely a corny almost comic book version of a gangster film but I find it charming.
I will say it doesn't have much in terms of rewatchability (is that a word?).

Interesting, I think it being rewatchable is one of its best traits. It’s just so easy breezy.

Any movie that has a great like: "That's not a knife" is worthy of inclusion. Same with Untouchables with bing a knife to a gun fight.

I remember the US was Aussie obsessed for a spell following Crocodile Dundee. I totally blame Crocodile Dundee for stuff like this so maybe it's fine to knock it down a bit:

The 80's were a great decade for horror flicks....hoping to see plenty more on this list
I know this isn't what they are doing here, so I won't keep saying it, but I didn't find that many held up when I was watching them in the last few years. I know Scoresman will throw out a couple gems, and I still had 5-6 on my top 100 that didn't make the overall list like Fright Night that I am sure will show up.
I can think of a half dozen off the top of my head that should make the list

That's why I was shocked it was only on my list. That's a top 10 iconic line from the 80s. Most of what I know about Australia is from the Croc Dundee movies.

96 (tie). Running on Empty
shuke - #40

Not the most captivating movie throughout, but great performances by River Phoenix, Judd Hirsch, and Christine Lahti, who I had a huge milf crush on back in the day.

I know I've posted it before, but it is one of a handful of movies that can get me to cry, during this scene.

The family, who is on the run from the law, basically leaves Phoenix where he is to live his life, knowing they'll never see him again.
I liked all 3 of them but didn't like Martha Plimpton at all.

I have 15 horror movies in the top 60 I submitted, 3 in my top 10. Another 5-6 that skirt the horror/comedy line. Not all of these will be considered "good" and maybe half of them hold up today but they all played a role in shaping my love of horror.

and just as I typed this I thought of a horror movie I forgot but totally would have in my top 60. Dammit.

Facts
We each submitted 60 movies.
10 movies appeared on all three of our lists. 9 of those make up the top 9 in the rankings.
23 movies appeared on two of our lists. Not sure yet how many are making the cut.
104 movies appeared only on one list.

Getting a beer and finalizing the sort.

Should have allowed more entries to your dummy clique, dummy

The complete list of this is going to be completely flawed. Frankly, the concept of having 2 or 3 people generate the list of 100 movies is comical. However, we love our clique schtick here so ...

The downside to getting a lot of people is then the list will just read like the IMDB list.
Meh - I think we are generally a specific demographic here, I dont think it would line up.

Some defense of BTTF 2 since it was on my list.

I don't get the hate. This movie picks up right where the first movie left off and keeps that pace up throughout. The movie seamlessly covers 4 different time periods which is not an easy task to do so convincingly and does so without rewriting or affecting the original in any meaningful way. This point also brings up the continued stellar acting of the main cast. Lea Thompson had to play 3 different ages of herself and Biff had to play 4, including a grandchild. The chemistry between Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd remains throughout and they continued to be one of the best duos in 80s movie history.

Also, what's a great blockbuster without some sort of iconic social/cultural impact, in this case it came in the form of hoverboards and self-tying shoes! What kid didn't pretend their skateboard was a hoverboard and we're still to this day waiting for the real deal. And when we talk about movies that tried to predict the future, this one is always near the top of the list.

If that's not enough to rank this movie at the backend of a top 200 80s movies, I don't know what is.

So old Big figures out the car, goes in it, knows how to operate it, no one notices, and changes the past. Once that happens, shouldn't then the future change just like in BTTF when MJF started feeling queasy cause his parents weren't getting together and he is being removed from the picture?

I agree with this. I like the individuality of these lists. It may sound like a lot of complaining that goes on with the back and forth, but I really enjoy the banter about "horrible" picks and the defense of them. The thread would be no fun if everything was ranked as predicted.

Deleted scene shows exactly that

Even though that was deleted, they for sure showed him struggling and looking ill, that's why he broke off the top of his cane when getting out of the Delorean. But yeah, him being able to operate the thing was a stretch to say the least.

Thank you for sharing, I hadn't seen that before.

On thing I struggle with, and this is a me thing, is when sequels do improbable things. This is def more a me thing than anyone else, just I find it annoying and hard to accept. The concept of "we needed to change the world so we could make a sequel".

In BTTF MJF needed to go to Doc as the delorean was complicated. BTTF II old Bif figured it all out on the sly. Just doesn't sit with me.

Don't get all mad at what you yourself created. If you can't take criticism, why on earth did you choose to post your favorite 80s movies on an internet message board? I mean, you even saw the previous thread. What did you expect to happen here?

These are time travel popcorn movies and these are the wrong kind of questions to ask. The answer is likely the reason the sequel isn't as good as the original, but that does not mean it's bad. The questions you should be asking are "Where the **** is my hoverboard?" and "Why do I not yet own a flying car?".

I think he's referring to the references to the clique schtick. I know I for one, welcome critiques of my movie picks.

Oh, was that the pain point? Good to know for future schticking ;)

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one in the universe who doesn't take the internet seriously.

Are you going to have a summary list? You could put it in the post with the other 101 picks for quick comparison....

I'm not talking about criticism of the picks. Have at it. I'm talking about the whining about not being included. This wasn't set out to be all inclusive, sorry. I think these are more interesting when you have limited opinions, because it generates more discussion on what picks are good/bad.

My picks so far are pretty indicative of the kind of list I have. Horror/Comedy/Blockbuster with one really bad, but very personal pick thrown in.

Fright Night # 40
Crocodile Dundee # 38
Back to the Future 2 # 37
No Holds Barred # 35

My one and only drama/thriller pick should be coming up soon unless someone else ranked it, which I think means it would end up higher on the list. Not sure really.
