The NFL is Horrible This Year (4 Viewers)

I watch games from the 70s all the time. It’s so much better.
I thought about having a FF league where owners show up for a live draft and don't know what year they are drafting. When they get there they are furnished with a final stat line for the year chosen that includes number of games played by each player as well as which weeks each player played in.

Then you have a draft and teams set their lineups for each week. Then you play out the season with the actual stats that occurred.

So you go into this kind of blind other than your memory and then get hit with a year.......1978. You get your "cheat sheet" provided with end of year stats. You draft your team like normal. Then set your lineups. You can either do it all at once or you can use the honor system and turn in a lineup every week and slow play the season.

It's something you can do in the spring and summer. I think it would be interesting.

The games themselves are as good/bad as they've always been. The players get more amazing every day. Watching the game on TV now VS thirty years ago is like comparing the Christopher Reeves Superman to the Avengers.

But it does definitely suck more than it did.

The biggest culprit is over exposure imo. Monday, Thursday, Sunday morning abroad and Night, first game of the year, Thanksgiving games, Saturday games. A handful of subscription services all carrying exclusive games. NFL channels, NFL app. NFL players in every commercial (Barkley reeeaaallly needs an acting coach). There's more football than ever. I was watching a baking competition and some defensive player showed up to introduce his favorite desert. I know my algorithms are all built to show me all football all the time, but it's just coming at me from so many angles, it's invaded places it doesn't belong. I'm pretty sure the battle for sub king between Eli Manning and Danny Devito was fortold in the book of Revelations.

Then there's the gambling. Now that it's encouraged, football feels almost like there's something missing if I don't have a dollar riding on some ridiculous prop bet. Seriously, toss some change in an app and waste a dollar on some third string te to catch the last td of the game and you find yourself caring about the saints-fins. Which, quite frankly, is bad for football as a product. I wonder if the elimination of prop betting (only a matter of time right?) will change any numbers there. Point is, the most I would gamble was on fantasy and a number square with people I know. Now, it just feels more boring without it.

wow!!! I had never noticed that before

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars and subs. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.--Luke 21:25-26

When I say I don't understand when people say the league is horrible, it's stuff like this.

The skill and athleticism continue to rise. It's amazing.
It's amazing to see the skill of some of these skateboarding guys and motocross racing too going over those big jumps and what-not. It's kind of cool to see them do this stuff but I'm not going out of my way to watch it either. I certainly wouldn't sit thru 2 hours of commercials to watch a 60 minute event.

If you sat down and did the math, how much actual football are we watching? Because it seems to me most of the time we are either watching ads or listening to the announcers talk in between plays.
IIRC there have been multiple analyses about this and, I think there is something like 10-12 minutes of actual plays run during a 60 minute game. But, that is probably reasonably consistent over the years.

Do you still watch NFL games?

All we watch on Sundays is redzone

Single games are pretty brutal to watch I agree
Red zone is the worst and, now it's riddled with commercials too.

Terrible take imo. It’s the only way to football on Sundays.
I do not like that they’ve added commercials at all, but it’s far from riddled with them fwiw

I do watch steelers games but flip to other games during commercials. It's astonishing how often the other games are on commercial at the same time. I dont watch the other teams anymore.

Have they done studies about how much comercials we watch during a game? This is unbearable for me. It doesnt have to be this way and it's not ok with me.

I've been watching a lot more Premier League lately. I'm deciding not to be the NFL's sucker anymore.

Ads are primary revenue streams. What alternatives would you suggest to make it not be this way?

It's the TikTok of sports viewing. It is literally the core reason there is a thread titled "The NFL is Horrible This Year". People watch RZ then when they try to watch TNF, SNF or MNF they freak out because some team isn't always near the GL.

And, now with commercials that supersede the game audio and, rest assured there are more commercials to come next year.

No one does that. People that are used to RZ complain about the single games because of the ridiculous amount flags and commercial breaks

But hey , you’re entitled to your opinion, even if it’s wrong

I don’t know, maybe the nfl can make a trillion a year instead of a gajillion?

It's a nice idea but, if you had the opportunity to make a trillion or a gajillion would you really opt for a trillion?

I don't have Red Zone, I don't do prop bets, never been on Fan Duel, don't do DFS, I generally watch whatever games are on TV, usually with my sons who are Niners fans. The only money I spend is on the entry fees for the FF leagues I'm in, where I usually at least break even, and once a year I usually take my boys to a Niners game, which is outageously expensive so it's typically someone's birthday present from me. Sometimes the wife wins on Sundays and we turn off the TV and go outside somewhere and grab lunch (okay I monitor my FF games on my phone when I can, but I'm okay if I don't). I don't think the games are terrible at all except for the injuries, which I partly blame on artificial turf and owner greed. We can choose how much of the onslaught we absorb and how much we reject. The older I get, the less patience I have for unnecessary distractions. But I love football - I had fun playing it when I was a kid and I enjoy watching today's athletes do their thing. It's all good imo.

I watched about 20 minutes of RedZone 10 years or so ago and never since. For me its not watching football but more about monitoring fantasy or gambling stakes. My son thinks it's awesome but he has the attention span of a gnat.

I think it's been a fantastic NFL season so far. The playoff scenarios in both conferences are crazy.

The premier league has the most viewership worldwide, yet their product has commercials only during halftime.

So what's the alternative? Just don't fkn have them comercials. Be less American I guess.

Euros suck at money.

FTR I would love some kind of ad free subscription tier for the NFL but, it doesn't really lend itself to the product.

Why are you making excuses for these old greedy men? You're even celebrating this, taking pride in it. I don't know what else to tell you. I've shown you a better way but you still celebrate American greed. I guess just enjoy your commercials sometimes interupted by football. 🤷‍♂️ At least somebody is making money off it.

The worst is when a player is down with trainers bringing in a backboard and it’s cut to commercial.

Like, “this potentially paralyzed WR brought to you by DraftKings, where we’re giving odds on this same dude wiggling his fingers & waving to the crowd as he’s stretchered off.”

I’m kinda with you on this one. NFL should take a NASCAR or soccer approach and slap logos all over the unis so we can have commercial-free football.

I think it's less about making excuses and more about you not being realistic. Find me a segment of American society that people aren't trying to make the largest profit off of. This isn't an NFL specific issue.

I just pointed out a sports league that has more viewership and virtually no commercials. Therefore it is realistic. It's a matter of what ppl will tolerate. So yeah, then fans excuse these NFL owners, who make their product worse for us so they can get rich. Fans even encourage it, are proud of it even. "Look how much money they are making!" The rich NFL owners aren't entirely to blame it seems.

Give me 2 minutes of Buffalo Wild Wings commercials over 2 minutes of British/European soccer league any day
Soccer is only the most popular sport worldwide. And as much as the NFL tries to push Anerican football on the rest of the world, they don't want it.

But yeah, soccer sucks and American football is better.

I think there is a lot of misguided hand wringing over capitalist principles.

I understand turning down business based on principles. I honestly wish gambling had remained illegal because I find all those commercials and sponsorships to be predatory but that's me and I have no skin on the game.

If you're a business executive, and don't have an objection based on principles and you're turning down profit opportunity, then you should be fired.

I do have an objection based on the principle. The principle ppl should not suffer endless advertisements. The world us a worse place for it. My contention is that Europeans share that same principle, and thats why the Premiere league doesnt force their fans to watch commercials in order to enjoy the sport. Its because they have such principle is why, not because they are bad at making money.

I could definitely get on board with someone like this, but with our luck we'll end up with both kind of ads.
It will defo be both. I think the NBA is doing this.
NFL is too, but we’re so conditioned to athletic apparel logos that we don’t see them.

Every uni has a Nike or whatever logo. Plus NFL logos. Helmet has branding on it. Shoes too.

This is ridiculous. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch anything. Advertising and free content have gone hand-in-hand since the early days of broadcast radio. Nothing new here.
