The OFFICIAL 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread (1 Viewer)

This is a 2007-08 preview.
 Hey man, you know I'm the last guy on these boards to take the Rays for granted... I'm on record (probably a bit too early) as saying they don't finish in the cellar this year.

I know, I know. Still, once they trade Huff and Lugo and recall Upton and Young, there will be a learning curve there. Might be hard to make a 2nd-half push.

Still, they're 10 games better this year than at the same time last year. It's a start.

i'd be stoked if we merely win both series. i think the mets will play the yankees tough. hopefully by the end of next week the 4 game lead is still intact.
i hate going to florida!swept & still have a 3 game lead.

Matt Smith - R - Yankees Yankees optioned LHP Matt Smith to Triple-A Columbus. He'll have to do better than a 0.00 ERA next time. Smith hasn't given up a run in 12 innings this season, but the Yankees still demoted him to make room for Aaron Guiel. Jul. 6 - 7:37 pm et
Might be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Imagine us demoting Papelbopn after 12 scoreless innings for Hee Sop Choi.

I read somewhere that Hazel Mae was going to ESPN this fall. Hazel denied that rumor. She said she is staying in Boston with NESN.

Just last week, it was announced that Boston sports anchor Wendi Nix (also wife of Sox executive Ben Cherrington) is going to ESPN.

Boston sets record for consecutive games without error...check

Papelbon sets record for saves in first month...check

Papelbon sets record for most saves to open season by rookie...check

Ortiz sets record for most HR by Sox player before the break....check

Factor in Lester's emergence at 4-0, MDC shaping into a fine middle reliever, Lowell returning to form, Manny and Ortiz's bats waking up, Youkilis finally locking in a spot in the bigs as one of the top leadoff men in the game... Alex Gonzalez going 4 for 4 today while showing some life at the plate overall (.287 - 5HR over last month).

Then for gravy, let's add handing the ChiSox a loss at home to open the series (only their 13th all year) and I've gotta say I'm optimistic going into the break.

Heading up to Boston for the funeral... but let's hope the Sox can at least split the last two games in Chicago as that would be a nice achievement against a solid squad.

With one pitcher? Yeah, right.Let's not lose sight of the fact that the Rays are still among the bottom dwellers in all of MLB with their pitching stats.
Notice I said 07-08. They have some quality arms at the AA/AAA level. Try looking into it, you may learn something.

"Thank you sir, I'll have another."

Nice dominating victory by the Bosox. Buerhle ha lost something like 9 or 10 decisions with ZERO victories with Widger catching him. It really perplexes me why Ozzie continues to allow Widge to catch Burls.

It's odd how much of an effect a catcher can have on a pitcher... very much overlooked by a lot of folks.

i'll take it!

up 3 going into the break. the yanks play at chisox & we get the A's at home. nice up 4 after those series?

]That was a heartbreaker... woulda been nice to sweep but we'll take 2 of 3
Icon,The Sawx are in great shape. They were clearly the better team this weekend. Great pitching and unbelievable hitting.

Rivera chokes?

I have to assume you are :fishing: here, as Rivera (he of the 0.81 postseason ERA in 111 2/3 postseason innings) is widely considered the greatest postseason reliever of all time...
Compare that star-stunning ERA with his Boston Splits, not so star-stunning anymore, eh?
No need to address the trolls man, apparently rivera has found the fountain of youth and his increasing troubles (slow start last year.. slower start this year) are not indicative of age catching up to him.
Bump for All-Star break Rivera statistical update. Since this post:22 G (3-2 W/L)

28 IP

26 K (8.3 K/9)

14 H, 4 BB (0.64 WHIP)

3 ER (0.96 ERA)

0 HR allowed

11/12 Saves (92%)

Papelbon over the same period of time:

20 G (2-0)

24.2 IP

28 K (10.2 K/9)

14 H, 5 BB (0.77 WHIP)

2 ER (0.73 ERA)

2 HR allowed

12/15 Saves (80%)

And for Alias, Rivera's stats versus Boston over that same period:

4 G

4.2 IP

1 K

3 H, 0 BB (0.64 WHIP)

0 ER (0.00 ERA)

0 HR allowed

3/3 Saves

So by your logic, he's actually now BETTER against Boston than he is against everybody else. ;)

Fountain Of Youth UP?!?

By the way, I'm just joking with y'all. I just love the early season "Rivera is finished" cries every year...and then every year he's his usual utterly dominant self. I can understand Boston fans cries for "THIS will be THE year he loses it", but it hasn't happened yet. Methinks someday we Yankee fans will be hoping the same things about Papelbon. He's the goods (duh).

Second Half Schedule Favors Red Sox

from SoSH

Going into the second half, the Red Sox have the most home games left of any team in the American League - 44. They play only 31 more times on the road. New York, by contrast plays 38 more games away from Yankee Stadium.

Against their main competition, Boston, Toronto, Detriot, Minnesota, and the White Sox, the Yankees have the following games scheduled:

Boston (7) 3H 4R

Toronto (13) 6H 7R

Detriot (3) 3H

Minnesota (3) 3H

Chicago White Sox (6) 3H 3R

Total: 33 games

Boston, on the other hand, has the following schedule against their main foes:

New York (7) 4H 3R

Toronto (7) 4H 3R

Detroit (3) 3H

Minnesota (3) 3H

Chicago White Sox (3) 3H

Total: 23 games

Because they are the best home team in the major leagues, the Red Sox are set up to win the American League East. If David Wells can come back, they are set up to win the World Series.

The only thing sadder than a yankee fan who's one of the most regular posters in a red sox thread is..... well... I guess there's not much worse than that. :D Just got back in from out of town.... obviously the A's are on one of their tears... no worries. Sox will right the ship

Lester pitches a gem (one hit over 8 innings). Papelbon gets save #28 while lowering his ERA to 0.55.

Gonzalez drives in the winning run.

Hazel Mae signed a contract extension with NESN.

What a great day.

 With Wake down, Lester/Beckett have picked good times to step to the plate... Loving the prospect of a Schilling / Wake / Beckett / Lester front 4 down the stretch... let's see how they hold together. HOPEFULLY either Wells or Clement can step into the 4 or 5 slot eventually...

Beckett needs to take notes from Lester... the kid is already more advanced as a PITCHER than Beckett, who is still more of a thrower IMHO.

Wakefield has a fractured rib , will be out 3-4 weeks

Wakefield has fractured rib

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

The Red Sox did not offer an official update on Tim Wakefield’s condition but the Globe has learned from multiple sources that the knuckleballer has a stress fracture of the rib cage.

Wakefield, who was not available for comment, is expected to miss from three weeks to a month and is expected to go on the disabled list retroactive until Tuesday.

Lefthander Kason Gabbard, a 29th-round draft pick in 2000 who was 9-2 with Double-A Portland, is expected to be called up to replace Wakefield and start Saturday vs. Seattle.

The Red Sox are now going to take Wells with them to the West Coast. Boomer will pitch a side session Friday in Seattle and will pitch another simulated game Monday in Oakland

:sadbanana:

Papelbon in.. non save situation.

FYI - He's 8 saves away from becoming the all-time leader in saves by a rookie

Flyout....K (chavez).... K (ellis)

Leapt out to 2-strike counts against everyone

Wells Looks Good in Simulated Game

OAKLAND -- The gates of McAfee Coliseum were hours from being opened, the sun was blazing hot and David Wells was pouring sweat. And that was good news for the 43-year-old lefty who has spent three frustrating stints on the disabled list this season while making just two outings for the Red Sox.

Boomer, whose career looked to be in jeopardy at various points this season, is looking primed to make his return to the rotation within the next couple of weeks. This, after throwing five innings of simulated action against two teammates (Gabe Kapler and Alex Cora) and a 2006 draft pick (Lars Anderson) on Monday afternoon.

Wells, in maintaining his two-month silence to print reporters, was not available for comment. Manager Terry Francona liked what he saw.

"Good, good, he did good," Francona said of his pitcher, who took a line drive off his right knee on May 26. "It was a hot day, too. I thought he got a little tired, but I thought he did well. The biggest thing is to probably see how he bounces back [Tuesday]. I don't think there's any reason to think he won't bounce back. That's obviously the next step, to see how he shows up tomorrow, then we'll go from there."

It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Wells will make a Minor League rehab assignment at the end of this week, though Francona didn't see the need to make a premature announcement.

The important thing was that Wells wasn't favoring his right knee at all.

"He fielded his position. Guys bunted on him a couple of times, things like that," Francona said. "He moved around very well."

-----

Foulke comes on in relief:

In due time, the Red Sox hope that Monday was a foreshadowing of things to come: Keith Foulke coming on in relief of Wells. That's what happened during the simulated game, as Foulke, out since June 12 with right elbow woes, threw two innings.

Foulke will throw a side session before Wednesday's game and the Red Sox will re-evaluate his program when they return to Fenway Park this weekend.

"I don't know what my velocity was," said Foulke. "They're putting the bat on the ball but they weren't crushing the ball. It wasn't too bad. Until we get in the game and see what it is in game conditions, then we'll know for sure. It was definitely as good as it was before I left."

Aside from getting back into pitching shape, Foulke was also trying to refine his mechanics in order to ease the strain on his arm.

"Trying to straighten out my stride, go more towards the plate, trying to make my arm longer to keep it away from my head," said Foulke. "Keep the pressure off my elbow."

----------

Wily Mo over Kapler:

Facing a left-hander for the fifth time in six games, Francona again had to decide whether to start Wily Mo Pena or Kapler in right field. This time, Pena got the nod, even though Kapler is a .280 hitter lifetime against Barry Zito in 25 at-bats. Monday marked the first time Pena had ever faced the former Cy Young Award winner.

Francona frequently plays the matchups, but this time, he took a broader approach.

"You know, it's hard. I'll be honest with you," Francona said. "I went back and forth and then I kind of tried to stay out of the small picture and look at the big picture. Gabe's played a lot this week. I just thought, you know what, Wily Mo could use the at-bats. Hopefully in the meantime, it will help us win.

"We're just trying to look at the broader view. It's not always the smaller version. Sometimes it's not easy to do. We want to win every game so bad, we put a lot of thought into it and ended up playing Wily Mo. If we don't play him against some lefties, you could run into a situation where he'll play enough to make outs and I don't want that to happen."

-------------------

Rotation alignment:

Though left-hander Kason Gabbard turned in a solid debut against the Mariners, Francona is leaning toward skipping a fifth starter this time around the rotation because of Thursday's day off.

The way things stand right now, Jon Lester will open the homestand against the Angels Friday night, followed by Josh Beckett on Saturday and ace Curt Schilling in the ESPN Sunday night game.

"I told Gabby, 'Go throw [your] side today just like a normal side.' As we sift through things because of the day off, we'll let him know," Francona said.

The Red Sox don't need a fifth starter until Aug. 1, which comes the day after the trade deadline.

-------------

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP:

Schilling (12-3, 3.50 ERA) will face right-hander Jason Windsor (0-0, 1.80) at 10:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday night in the middle game of this series.

As hard as it is to admit, I gotta say that the Sox playoff chances come down to the Fat Man, D Wells. If he is effective they are in, if he fails then they are on the outside looking in

I wouldn't say so. The Sox chances are going to rely heavily on how well the Yankees and Toronto (whom I'm not ruling out, but still don't think they can pull it out) do.David Wells is a minor factor, after all, they're in first place so far without him.

Imagine a Wells/Ponson, Yanks/Sox game. Fattest...pitchers...ever.*

*with all apologies, Bartolo.

they are in first without him, but with Wake. Now with Wake out, they have nobody to pitch the 4th and 5th day. Having a bad 5th pitcher is ok, but having a bad 4th/5th won't work. Wells needs to fill that 4th spot
