The OFFICIAL 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread (1 Viewer)

As hard as it is to admit, I gotta say that the Sox playoff chances come down to the Fat Man, D Wells.  If he is effective they are in, if he fails then they are on the outside looking in
I wouldn't say so. The Sox chances are going to rely heavily on how well the Yankees and Toronto (whom I'm not ruling out, but still don't think they can pull it out) do.David Wells is a minor factor, after all, they're in first place so far without him.

Imagine a Wells/Ponson, Yanks/Sox game. Fattest...pitchers...ever.*

*with all apologies, Bartolo.
they are in first without him, but with Wake. Now with Wake out, they have nobody to pitch the 4th and 5th day. Having a bad 5th pitcher is ok, but having a bad 4th/5th won't work. Wells needs to fill that 4th spot
I dunno, Wake usually does best at the beginning and end of the season anyhow.I swear, every time that guy starts against the Yankees, the weather dips 10 degrees and the wind picks up.

Not to be a jerk, but I hate generalized statements like that, as they are usually wrong. In fact, Wake does not struggle in the middle of the season. Not sure where you got that.

Here is his wins vs. appearances in 2005

and 2004

In 05 he was pretty steady the entire year (notice how linear the graph is)

and in 04 he actually was at his best in the middle of the season (in starts 19-26 he went 7-1, finishing up the season only winning one of his last 7 starts).

Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but the Sox offered Coco Crisp to the White Sox for Mark Buehrle. They were obviously turned down.

I don't think Coco Crisp is as good as the Red Sox (and many fans) seem to think he is.

Remember the days when the Red Sox fans were saying "Johnny Who?" touting Crisp as better?
Yup. I wonder if they really felt that way, or were just bitter about Damon leaving? What's even more ridiculous than that, IMO, is the fact that Crisp has the 2nd best selling jersey on the team (behind only Papelbon). This guy has done almost nothing since he got here.

I missed the beginning of the game...should we be reading anything into Mark Loretta's absence from tonight's lineup? He's rumored to be the odd man out after this season anyhow, are they trying to move him?

And what the heck happened to Nixon?

Francona says it doesn't mean anything (according to Boston.com).Not sure if I totally believe him.

C'MON!!!!! The guys SNAFF number after the 6th inning was on par with Willie Mays in his prime... his BSAWRIP was > than Rickey Hendersons and he made the greatest catch of all time this year. They shouldn't settle for any less than Buehrle AND Contreas.....

Surprised the Sox are giving up on Crisp already.
I don't think anyone's giving up on him per se... he's just being included in trade talks like many other people on the team right now. Of course... boston media will blow it out of proportion like they always do since they gotta blabber on about SOMETHING. :)

For the record... if any deals are going to have to require any of our up and coming kids I hope they don't go through.... I certainly hope Theo and company don't pull a deal out of their asses for the sake of getting something done before the break. I'd rather tail off and finish 2nd in hte division and miss the playoffs than mortgage the team's future right now.

They need relief pitching badly...hope it happens. Nothing too huge, but someone to stabilize the bullpen. I don't see any starters with any impact available for the right price, so get a reliever and hope that Wells recovers ok

It's a good thing we had that police escort for Mirabelli to get to the park a few months ago, We are going to need him now.

And the free fall begins. Anybody wanna buy my Yankee tickets in Sept? They might be worthless. :bye:
sure, tool.
Enjoy playing golf with your prospects in October
enjoy visiting your "aces" at the old folks home.
Wang is only 26
You guys mind taking your little slapfight elsewhere?Shady... this is pretty low rent... I usually expect better from you.

looks like the Yanks will grab 1st tonight as they've beat Toronto. Boston's having to wrestle with some injuries right now (not that the yanks haven't hand their share of problems.

Will be intersting to see how the Sox hold up over the next couple of weeks. Unless someone steps up at as 4th starter this squad almost certainly won't be seeing the playoffs.

Carmona is imploding right now...

Should be over... now tying run is in scoring position... go ahead on 1st

Let's see if Youk can be the hero... he is .405 with 2outs and RISP

Full count... 2 outs... runners will be going...

Youk nearly hit in the head... bases loaded. Wow

It's all up to loretta... BALL ONE

Yanks injuries happened early enough to overcome. Its gonna be hard to overcome these late season injuries for the Sox.
