Schilling draws praise

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

ORLANDO - The common theme among a few baseball executives who I've bumped into this morning at the GM Meetings is praise for Schilling for taking much less money to stay in Boston if a deal is worked out.

Schilling probably could have secured at least one year and a vested option for a second year in the open market at close to or about the $13 million per year he received from the Red Sox last year. While one AL GM didn't know the exact particulars of what Schilling will wind up with on a one-year deal, it's expected that he will play for, if he makes his incentives, in the $10 million range. Again, those are strictly ballpark figures and based on one GM's knowledge of what he's heard.

Props to the big guy for leaving a few Million on the table to retire in Boston. Should earn him a couple standing O's and a hero's welcome for his farewell tour.

This 3rd base saga between the Yanks and Sox and Lowell and A-Rod will be compelling theater.

If Lowell wants Boston he needs to make it happen sooner rather than later. If he assumes that he can break the bank once A-Rod is signed, then he's playing with fire. The Sox can easily move Youkilis over to third and grab a 1B via trade or FA. I really hope that A-Rod does NOT come to Boston.

I think Crisp will be held until the 3B position is resolved. They need him as a trade chip until its straightened out.

Finally, I really think the Sox should sign Schilling to a one year deal. If we can get him for $7 to $8 million, I would do it. If he is a man of his word, I think he'd sign in Boston for $8 Million as opposed to $12 million somehwere else. His family loves Boston. Kids are in the public school. His wife is active in the community (PTO, etc).

I love the Hot Stove.....admittedly, its fun when your team spends big money. I would think Hot Stove is really frustrating for a small market team.
Lowell will have plenty of teams trying to sign him. He may be better served to wait until Arod signs somewhere, then let the rest of them fight over him.Crisp is not that valuable trade chip. He plays excellent defense, but he has hit terribly for 2 years now...and he is going to make 10.5 million over the next 2 years.

Schilling made 13 million this past year. He is not going to take a 5 million dollar pay cut.

I am still fascinated by all this Arod hate. He was willing to renegotiate his contract and take less money to go to the Sox in 2003. He willingly moved from SS to 3B even though he was clearly the better SS. But, he had a few bad at-bats in the postseason, so he must be the devil.
Foot....meet mouth.

Schilling made 13 million this past year. He is not going to take a 5 million dollar pay cut.
There is some misinformation floating around the new Schilling contract. His deal calls for an $8 million base with $2 million in weight incentives. He also will get $375K at 130 IP plus another $375K for each 10 innings thereafter (up to $3 million) and an extra $1 million if he receives even 1 vote in the Cy Young balloting. So he *COULD* earn $14 million if he hits all his milestones.

Ortiz has surgery

By Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff

Red Sox DH David Ortiz underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today, according to a statement released by the team. The surgery, performed by team physician Dr. Thomas Gill, was done to address a cartilage problem in the knee. The surgery went well, according to the statement, and Ortiz is expected to begin rehabilitation immediately.

---

Good deal. He needed this surgery before this season but tried to play through it. Obviously it robbed him of a lot of power. Next season Ortiz should be back to a HR machine instead of a 2B machine.

Manny is selling his car...

Manny Ramirez tried selling his grill on eBay, but the auction was shut down due to an onslaught of phony bids. David Ortiz tried selling his car on eBay, but that auction was also derailed by phony bids (that time from his fellow Sox teammates).

Now Manny is back in the eBay business again, hoping the third time's the charm: this time he's selling his 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8 - and West Roxbury Motors is handling the listing for him so they can make sure only legit bidders get through.

Manny apparently keeps a stable of "only" four cars: the Chrysler, a Mercedes, an Escalade and a "project car" that he's restoring. So in order to make room for that 1958 Chrysler Imperial he talked with Jay Leno about, he's got to unload the 2006 Chrysler.

The listing for the car ("It has a lot of custom features, 22-inch wheels, chrome, a custom grill. It was Manny's personal drive.") will go up on the auction site on Thursday night. And in addition to the car, the winning bidder will receive a bundle of goodies direct from Manny: "The lucky winner will get a trunk full of autographed items, a jersey, bat and ball, four tickets to a future Red Sox game and a meet-and-greet with Manny to talk about the car."

Price tag? The car is worth approximately $35,000, and bidding will start at $5,000, but the West Roxbury Motors folks expect it to go for about $50,000.

Boras said yesterday that Eric Gagne will pursue a role as a closer this off-season, meaning he will not return to the Red Sox.

ELLSBURY SIGNS WITH BORAS

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?...winter_meetings

• Scott Boras has apparently recovered from the sting of losing longtime client Kenny Rogers. According to two sources at the winter meetings, Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has dropped agent Joe Urbon and is now represented by Boras. Diamondbacks pitcher Micah Owings also recently signed on with Boras' group.

Great :goodposting:

This IS B.S. So you are trying to tell me NO OTHER PLAYER in the history of baseball has had an incentive in their contract tied to an award and that Schilling's contract presents a precedent?

NASHVILLE - The Baseball Writers' Association of America voted ths morning to approve a resolution where starting in 2013 all contracts that have financial terms attached to major awards will not be eligible for consideration for that award. The resolution stems from Curt Schilling's new contract were he received a $1 million bonus for at least one Cy Young vote. The Baseball Writers Association memebership votes on the annual awards. The BBWAA will also notify the Major League Players' Association and Major League Baseball of its decision. A committe will discuss the issue with both bodies at a future date.

I think we will compete for a repeat in 2008, but that offensive core is old. Ortiz' knees just turned 96 and Manny is getting old, and so is Lowell. I am concerned about the middle of the order, as soon as 2009.

Don't know why I jumped into this thread, I don't belong here. But this was an interesting post. I know tons of other players have had awards written into their contracts. Doesn't seem like that is a big deal, usually it is for wining the award. But I guess I can see the issue if you are rewarding a player for just getting a single vote for an award. Tons of room for problems with that. I can't believe a team would go for a condition like that, but I guess the Sox did (and who knows how many other teams and contracts).

I don't see where everyone thinks Ortiz's knees are so bad off. He needed a scope and got it. He's not that old and everything I see has him regaining much of that power he lost due to injury last year.

Woof

The dog ate it? Closer's canine reportedly chews on history

ESPN.com news services

Updated: December 20, 2007, 12:16 PM ET

The baseball from the final out of the 2007 World Series is at Jonathan Papelbon's home in Hattiesburg, Md., according to the Hattiesburg American.

Well, part of it is.

The rest? You should ask the Boss.

If he could talk, he might say it was delicious. But the most he'll say is "woof."

"Boss," you see, is Jonathan Papelbon's dog. Boss likes to play with baseballs. And Boss found the baseball that Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek gave the closer after he struck out the Rockies' Seth Smith to clinch Boston's second World Series title in four years, the newspaper reported.
