NOTHING is guaranteed.....:Yankeefan:Pitching seems like the weak link again this year.
Like the fact they have moved back to building the farm system like they used to. Opposed to buying everyone up, they have proven that does not work.
Gonna be a rollercoaster of a year.
Pocket Rocket?
Arod?
Future management questions?
Guaranteed playoffs but who knows from there.......
Good comeback for the Yanks.Shouldn't this be a countdown to 1000 runs thread? 991 to go.

I guess these comments might make me one of those A-Rod defenders you speak of (although I don't really consider myself to be one). It just seems people in general are way to one sided on him, which ever side they are one.As for the game yesterday - I don't know why the curtain call would make you queasy. A late home run, in what was a close game before that, on opening day - people were just excited about the game and the start of baseball, they would have done that no matter who hit it. Would you have been queasy if Posada's and A-Rod's home runs were reversed in the game and Posada got the call? If so then your comments were fair, but were you queasy because of a minor home run getting a curtain call or because of who got it?I've also seen little mention of his hit and stolen base to start the seventh that led to the go ahead run. They didn't do anything else that inning, I think he was pretty important in getting the lead back. That was bigger then his home run. Of course I didn't get to see that part of the game (stupid job) so I don't if it was a 'weak' hit or if he was given 2nd base, but it seems some credit is due there.I guess his game just gets so many comments - negative and positive - that it is really hard to discuss him in any balanced way. Most people around here know of my stance on A-Rod. It's not even so much that I don't like him; it's that I don't like how much people stand up and defend him to the ends of the earth when he's never done enough as a Yankee to warrant it.That said, for the first time ever this afternoon...I actually felt bad for the guy on that pop fly. It was clearly Posada's ball, A-Rod's struggles with pop-ups are well-documented, and sitting in the upper deck I can attest to the fact that the wind was worse than it appeared on TV.Be sure to mark the date/time of this, because there won't be many instances of my defense of him the rest of the year. In fact, I got downright queasy after the CURTAIN CALL he got after his 9th inning HR brought them all the way back from the depths of a 7-5 lead to make it a 9-5 lead. :typical: (ahhh, that's more like it)
1) Understandable.... Especially with the new generation of fans out there in ALL Sports and the super hyped me generation.. But, especially Yankee fans or even Pats fans (WT) who have been a bit spoiled. Heck, even Sox fans are spoiled with their 1 win, it's a different sox fan from the self tortured souls of many years. That woe is me, Sox fan was kind of fun and cute compared to the angered, pumped up, hatred filled fan of today.2) THIS I don't get and never will, Obviously Jeter isn't Gay, he gets more and better tail than this whole board put together so, to me, it says more about the person who would use his own avatar in association with GAY, Hmmmmmmmmmm?????.. It's not like you can take the poster seriously, especially if they want to go on a rant about Sports fan "Class"..... AND I don't get hating so much that you pick a player on another team to use as your avatar... Where would I even begin, should a pick a Red Sox player???? Ortiz????? WHY??? It's just weird to me. 3) VERY possible... And isn't anything earth shattering, Pettite isn't what he once was and the AL is MUCH tougher to pitch in than what he's faced the past few years. I'm not overly confident.4) Like I've always said, once you get into the playoffs, Anything can happen.... There's a quote I heard somewhere from a baseball guy that say's it well.. "It's not the best team that wins in playoff series, it's the hottest team"... And I've always said that - Go back to when Schilling and Randy were at the top of their game, a Billion dollar roster wasn't beating them and that's that. Even last year, you run into Kenny freaking Rogers pitching like Cy Young and there's no answer..... Now, with the wild card and more playoff games, it's harder than ever and I think what the Yankees did do in the late 90's was pretty incredible and something that we'll never see again, a perfect storm of great young players developing at the same time along with a payroll that allowed them to stay and add talent when needed. HEY AS A SPORTS FAN I"M ALL FOR SALARY CAPS!!!!! Major league baseball is what it is, we choose to enjoy it, not watch or half enjoy it and whine about it.1. I hate the Yanks with an unexplainable passion.2. The guy who had the "Jeter "Gay" Cologne" avatar; please let me know if you still have it saved in imageshack or something like that and if so, with your permission, I'd like to use it as my avatar over at another board or two where I post (although Yankees' fans; I do recognize that Jeter is a phenomonal player, it just doesn't change the fact that he is gay).3. Andy Petitte is going to get OWNED going back to the AL. It may not be tomorrow night per se; but over the course of the season.4. A $200M payroll and zero championships in the past 7 years is a pathetic, pathetic joke.

As a quick heads-up...The Jeter Gay Avon Avatar I made caused quite a stir.... but I tihink all you guys completely missed the point. I never was saying Jeter himself was gay... I was saying that the ad, the fact that he was doing a cologne called "Driven" with AVON of all brands...was gay. Perhaps you mistook my tone... but I actually got a good laugh at how you've been stalking the sox threads, then start a yankees thread and right off call out the "haters". Frankly it caught me as rather amusing and figured I'd point it out. If sarcastic/hypocritical is your shtick then by all means carry on And regarding the smack talk... I've got some yankees buddies that I fire back and forth with as well and I enjoy a good verbal jousting. However, they're a bit more creative and intelligent than you are.... and the level of banter is certainly a bit higher than "the BoSox BLOW"..... and WTF is up with "Andrew Dice K" .... what connection does Andrew Dice Clay and Matsuzaka have other than that their names rhyme? If you're going to try to steal Chris Berman's shtick, at least don't suck as badly at it as he does.First off ICON I am by no means a "kid" and I am not giving anyone a bad name. That's where I disagree.I don't think Posada would've gotten such a rousing ovation for a HR that extended the lead. A-Rod's ovation rivaled Jeter's HR last opening day (when the team trailed at the time of the HR). It just seemed forced and overdone. As for the game yesterday - I don't know why the curtain call would make you queasy. Adding Vizcaino really helps because it will give Farnsworth or Proctor a rest if need be. I'd REALLY love to see the starters get a little deeper into games from time to time. Bruney proved a decent 6th or 7th inning guy last year. Plus with all the arms down on the farm, injuries aren't life or death anymore. Is it just me or do the Yankees have the best bullpen in baseball. They have 4 hard throwers who can all pitch the 8th or 9th inning if need be in Bruney, Vizcaino, Proctor, and Farnsworth. They have a good lefty specialist to face those tough lefties in Myers. And then end it all off with the best closer in the history of baseball who happened to strike out the side yesterday. Yeah Im psyched about the pen.All the starters have to do is keep the team in the game for 6 innings.

Do you think the curtain call has been used a little too much in recent years at Yankee Stadium? I don't go to many games (1-2 a year) so I can't say for sure, but it seems like on tv and radio that a lot of home runs in the last year or two get the 'tip of the cap' curtain calls when I don't think they really call for one. That was sort of my take on it yesterday. Since you were at opening day, maybe you go to more games and can comment on that. Certainly not a big deal, but something I thought I noticed.A-Rod - I've been a little dissapointed in him for sure. I have the same questions as you about his confidence. I don't get it either. I think he actually summed it up pretty good this spring though - either it will be great this year with him and the fans or it might not be a bad idea to move on. I don't think of it as holding Yankee fans hostage, since if the same crap keeps up all year and into the (hopefully) postseason, he probably should leave. Like you said, the team can win without him, so if it doesn't work again, maybe the out clause is just what everyone needs. That's where I disagree.I don't think Posada would've gotten such a rousing ovation for a HR that extended the lead. I'm not complaining about the HR and I admit that my :typical: comment was made in jest, but it seems almost like the A-Rod supporters bend over backwards to make sure he knows how much they love him...simply because he publicly demands to be loved.
I think his comments this spring about how he'll let the fans' treatment of him be the determining factor in whether he comes back or not are completely unfair. He's almost holding us hostage by forcing us to be supportive of him through it all, and if not -- it's sayonara. Just go out, do what you do, don't complain about the fans, don't discuss your relationship with Jeter (where are Jeter's comments about their relationship), and perform in the playoffs. That will get the fans, including me, 100% on your side. Basically calling them out and threatening to leave if everyone doesn't love you is not the way to my respect, nor that of other fans like me.
Yeah, it has the chance to be a very good bullpen. Should be a lot of fun to watch these guys this year. Hopefully a couple of them turn out to be reliable so Torre doesn't have to burn 1 or 2 guys out in the first half.Adding Vizcaino really helps because it will give Farnsworth or Proctor a rest if need be. Well said. Also, I'm not one of these people who boos my face off when A-Rod pops up in the 8th inning. I've never booed a Yankee in my life, and I cheered as loud as anyone when he homered off Sosa and then the slam against the Mets. Those 2 ABs were big-time hits, and I thought would be the start of great things.Do you think the curtain call has been used a little too much in recent years at Yankee Stadium?
That said, I'm hoping it works out and he stays.
Yep, we can judge players on those moments. A-Rod chose to come to the Yankees at a time when everything is based on how well the postseason goes. If they were winning and he was performing like he was, it wouldn't be as bad, but with no WS he is going to get a lot of criticism - deservedly so. I just like to find a balance in the criticism of him, sometimes it seems out of control. My personal experience has been with more people knocking him then backing him. (Just a note - in general I would give more credit for great post season performances then I would take away credit for bad ones. this is not A-Rod specific)I do agree with Shady on the booing and I think he can turn it around and I look forward to seeing him do so.Too much A-Rod talk though. Wow we need another game - these off days are just boring!Michael Brown said:Some Yankee fans attack me for suggesting that A-Rod should be judged on his postseason and "clutch" abilities. They say his regular season stats and overall game should trump what he does in the playoffs. So if that's the case, we should not be praising guys like Leyritz and Brosius for playoff heroics. After all, they were marginal at best during the regular season, which apparently trumps the playoffs. See how silly that sounds? Those same fans who defend A-Rod hold guys like Brosius and Leyritz in extremely high regard FOR the things they did at key moments in the playoffs. Can't it stand to reason, then, that if a guy does NOT do those things that we hold it against him? Even a little bit?
I think the NY media was a big reason for what's gone on... 1050 ESPN (Kay) radio was talking about "Will A-Rod ever be a "True Yankee"" WTF IS THAT!!!!!!!!! You ask, that question on the air and what comes next - all the morons and a discussion about what the guy has to live up to...Then it's "Can A-Rod live up to Derek Jeter" before the guy even put on a uniform.. then they start the "Will A-Rod be Boo'd"... Then it's "A-Rod GETS boo'd" after maybe 10 people boo the guy.. I swear I was at the early A-Rod games where boo-ng started and it was such a little amount but, you put the radio on and BAM, it's like it's 20,000 people or something which, of course becomes major discussion.Talk radio needs to make up their own stories which become a self fulfilling prophecy....And THEN, they wonder why "Yankee Fans" Boo the guy and don't hold him up to Jeter standards...Meanwhile - It's the minority of freaks who actually call radio shows and a few young punks at games making most of the noise... I know a lot of old time Yankee fans - NONE of which would think of Boo'ing A-Rod.Anybody who boos ARod for making an error and getting out in the 1st inning of the 1st game is a ####in moron. No way around it. Those people are an embarrassment and dont realize that baseball is a failing sport. The best hitters only get a hit 30% of the time. The best players all make errors. His fielding last year was bad, I dont know what was up with that and his hitting in the postseason has been bad but I dont see why he wont be able to turn it around.
Oh he definitely has to go out there once it's called for, no doubt. And to respond earlier, yes there are wayyyy too many curtain calls. Kind of like baseball's version of the Gatorade bath. Used to be just for winning the Super Bowl, now it's clinching playoff berths or commemorating a guy's 80th career win.The curtain calls should be reserved for A) Lead-taking HR in the late innings, B) Monumental accomplishments (team record for HR, 100th of career, 400th of career, etc), or C) Moon shots. Not for when Hideki Matsui makes it 4-4 in the 3rd inning.Huge Yankee fan here. Got a nice win yesterday. Bullpen looked good as did Giambi. A-Rod will be touch and go all year. Hopefully the fnas go easy on him. As for the curtain call, if he didn't go out for it when the fans called for it, the media would have ripped him for being an ### to the fans. He was in a no win situation with the curtain call.FWIW, I thought Icon's Jeter avatar was outstanding.
