I was even hesitant to say what I said. Notice I also say “like,” which isn’t a tic, but means “akin to” in this instance.
So it could be “like” the GI without it being that (especially since the BK isn’t a novella) exactly.

I don't really care ultimately but plays are really written to be performed, not read, unlike books. I get that they are also published in book form, but it just seems different to me.
I'm not advocating for anything - just my opinion.

I thought kupcho said in the prior thread that plays were out and was following the Pulitzer rules on fiction. I missed the change. Debating whether to go back to the preliminary list that I had in mind and include.

Sorry if I caused trouble by bringing plays into it. I don't think I saw previous discussion about it. Just seemed natural to me that some like Oedipus Rex or The Glass Menagerie would be eligible. I think of them as a "fiction book" in just the same way I would The Scarlet Letter or East of Eden.
Yeah I'm really interested in this breakdown. Same that I didn't do an exact count and different people would probably categorize things differently, but I think I have about 1/3 of my list that is universally considered great works and might be studies in any literature class, about 1/3 is stuff that is generally considered high quality writing but isn't still more pop fiction and wouldn't rise to the level of being classics, and 1/3 is stuff that is just my own personal interests and probably few other people have ever heard of.

I've read Notes From Underground and that's about it. We by Zamyatin. Bits and pieces of Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, too, but not enough to call them "read" in any real fashion.

I've read his whole catalogue, Brothers K 4 or 5 times. Needless to say Dostoevsky will play a major role in my list.

I found The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe on my bookshelf a few weeks ago when I was waiting for a book to come in to the local branch of my library. One of the kids must have had to read it for a class, it certainly wasn't my purchase.
It was incomprehensible.
It won't be appearing on my list

I read a somewhat credible essay positing that Shakespeare actually fit with the writing, politics, and temperament of Francis Bacon. It wasn't persuasive, but it was cool.
(I'm not a Shakespeare expert, but I did read one play of his recently and was promptly blown away. Gotta fluff those numbers to seventy somehow, and it might as well be one I've always wanted to read.)

I took an advanced Shakespeare class in 81 because the professor was hot. She made it a very difficult and time consuming deal. At least she was hot.

Understanding Shakespeare and the language is hard enough. At least I find it to be. The "advanced" part would have deterred me in an instant.
But she was hot. Was she . . .
I took a class in law school at the tender age of thirty-five. Before class I noticed an attractive, youngish woman walking around looking lost. Knowing we had a visiting professor, I introduced myself with total confidence and smoothness. "Excuse me," I asked, "Are you Ms. A__?"
"Why yes," came the reply.
"I'm ___. I'm in your class. You're looking for room 210, I think. It's right down the hall to the left."
We walked briefly and I took my seat and then answered the first question in class about language and the law. "Syntax," I said. She dug it.
How does this all end, you might wonder? Is this a Penthouse forum letter, bruh?
Well, she assigned a paper and I dropped the course. Nothing advanced for this guy.

It's also worth pointing out that it's only 30 books long, so it's providing heavy lifting (in terms of points assigned) for the books chosen.
On a related note, I was toying with the idea that each submitter could add one book that could be eliminated across the board for anyone that had submitted it. I had such a book in mind. scoobus did not include it in his list.
But someone did
Unfortunately, the Fiver rule is in place and I won't mention it when the book is revealed.

My list would be crappy, too.
I'll push OH to do his list. He won't do these things unless I pester him to. His list will be good. He's the only person I've ever heard of who skipped school as a kid so that he could go to the library and read instead.
