The Official Kicker (K) Thread (6 Viewers)

Rams K Greg Zuerlein (foot) is questionable for Week 16 against the 49ers.

Zuerlein was downgraded to out for Thursday's practice, while the Rams worked out ex-Cowboys K Brett Maher. We should have a good idea of Zuerlein's Week 16 status by Friday, but owners who made the fantasy finals should obviously just avoid the situation altogether at kicker.

Any Gould owners concerned about the weather tmrw night? Looks windy. Maybe a little rain.

Badgely sitting in waivers right now. No weather issues in LA.

Yikes. Don't like what I see for SF here:

https://abc7news.com/weather/

Rain coming in the evening and wind gusts up to 35 mph.

Reconsidering Gould here.
https://www.rotowire.com/football/weather.php

Saturday night's NFC West matchup at Levi's Stadium will feature cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Light winds will blow from end zone to end zone throughout the game. Overall, weather will have a minimal impact.

Game starts at 5:15 local time so I think that is the difference with the weather advisory.

Yeah I saw another forecast for SF that has the storm coming in after the game is over.

10 points for Gould in my scoring format, and he got to kick the game winner and be a real life hero. I hope all of you who were on the fence ended up starting him.

Colts signed K Chase McLaughlin to a one-year extension through 2020.

McLaughlin looks a lot like the heir apparent to Adam Vinatieri. He made 18-of-23 field goals and 26-of-26 extra points in 11 games with the Colts, Chargers and 49ers in 2019.

Jets signed K Brett Maher to a reserve/future contract.

Maher failed to find a new home after being waived by the Cowboys on Dec. 9, but he is now the only Jets kicker under contract. Sam Ficken was playing under a one-year deal in 2019. Ficken was not great, though he was more reliable than Maher.

Bills signed P/K Kaare Vedvik to a futures contract.

Vedvik has had an interesting NFL career while attempting to juggle punting and placekicking duties. Results have been bad, but he does have a massive leg. Vedvik has previously declined a workout as a kicker to focus in on punting.

Jason Butt of The Athletic reports the Falcons plan to tender exclusive rights free agent Younghoe Koo.

Koo fared admirably in his debut season with Atlanta, connecting on 88.5 percent of his field goal attempts with a long kick of 50 yards. Despite this, Koo will have to earn his starting job in camp as the Falcons are fully expected to bring in competition this summer. The Georgia Southern alum joined Atlanta after the Falcons parted ways with veteran Matt Bryant halfway through 2019.

Panthers re-signed K Joey Slye to a one-year contract.

Big-legged Slye had a league-low 4.6% of his kickoffs returned this past season and went 25-of-32 on field goals. He went 16-of-22 from 40-plus yards. Slye had some hiccups, however, as the Panthers flirted with a change during the year. Slye eventually rebounded and will head into the offseason as the No. 1 kicker.

Falcons re-signed K Younghoe Koo to a one-year, $660,000 contract.

Koo was an exclusive rights free agent, so his options were to accept the Falcons' offer or become a civilian. After washing out with the Chargers, Koo revived his career in the second half for the Falcons last season, draining 15-of-16 field goal attempts while executing a number of onside kicks. Still only 25, there is a chance Koo becomes the Falcons' long-term replacement for Matt Bryant.

Packers signed K Mason Crosby to a three-year, $12.9 extension.

Crosby will be wrapping up his age-38 season when this extension runs it's course. The veteran kicker had a bounce-back season in 2019 after two-straight iffy years in 2017 and 2018. Over his last three seasons, Crosby has made 84% of his field goals and 96% of his extra points.

The Patriots could release Stephen Gostkowski this offseason.

Gostkowski is entering his age-36 season coming off hip surgery. He missed five kicks in four games before landing on IR last year, putting his status with New England up in the air. The Patriots would save $3.5 million from Gostkowski's release.

Colts owner Jim Irsay said he isn’t sure if free agent Adam Vinatieri will be back.

Vinatieri is working his way back from December knee surgery. It's not clear if he plans on playing another season or if the Colts would want him after he missed eight field goals and six extra points last year. There should be more clarity on Vinatieri after the Combine.

Did it seem like NFL kickers were really bad in 2019?

Well...they were.

This graph shows how the league-wide FG% took a huge dive last season. The expected rate (based on kick location) shows that it wasn't due to longer/tougher kicks.

Texans signed K Ka'imi Fairbairn to a four-year, $17.65 million contract.

The deal includes $9 million guaranteed. Fairbairn has made quite the career for himself since going undrafted out of UCLA in 2017, sinking 55-of-77 field goal attempts (83.7%) over his 48 career games with Houston. While his field goal rate dropped from 2018 (88.1%) to last season (80%), the 26-year-old still successfully went 13-of-13 from shots inside 39 yards out.

Titans released K Ryan Succop.

This was inevitable after Succop hit on just 1-of-6 field goal tries upon being activated from injured reserve. His release frees up $2 million in cap space as the Titans have suddenly shed $11.5 million from their books in cutting Cameron Wake, Dion Lewis, and Succop in the past 48 hours — a blatant attempt to shed room in order to lock up both Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry. Succop will be 34 in September.

Broncos exercised K Brandon McManus' 2020 option.

It guarantees $1 million of his 2020 salary. McManus made 29-of-34 field goals (85 percent) last year, going 4-of-7 on attempts from 50-plus yards. The Broncos may look to extend McManus before training camp.

The Star Tribune's Ben Goessling reports the Vikings are in talks to extend Dan Bailey.

Bailey signed with the Vikings in 2018. In 2019, he connected on 27 of his 29 field goal attempts and 40 of his 44 extra point tries. Bailey was accurate on 93 percent of his field goals, good for top-five in the NFL.

Giants placed a second-round tender on restricted free agent Aldrick Rosas.

He'll make a $3.3 million salary. Rosas took a step back last year, converting 71 percent of his field goals, though he had just 17 attempts. The Giants saw enough to keep him around for at least another year. It won't be surprising if Rosas faces competition in training camp.

Cardinals extended a second-round tender to restricted free agent K Zane Gonzalez.

After flaming out with the Browns in 2017-18, Gonzalez drilled 31-of-35 field goals in the desert last season, going 7-of-10 from 40-plus yards, while missing just one of his 35 extra point attempts.

Mar 16, 2020, 7:05 PM ET

RFA tenders aren't guaranteed, right? So these teams could still sign someone else and cut the RFA.

Cowboys re-signed K Kai Forbath to a one-year contract.

Forbath helped stabilize the Cowboys' kicking position last year after Brett Maher flamed out. The 33-year-old veteran converted 10-of-10 field goal attempts. Forbath will likely face competition in the form of an undrafted free agent, but he will be the heavy favorite to kick Week 1.

Vikings re-signed K Dan Bailey.

Awful in 2018, Bailey rebounded last season to convert 93.1 percent of his field goal tries. He did shank 4-of-44 extra point attempts. Always one of the league's best kickers until 2017, 32-year-old Bailey has hopefully re-settled his career.

Mar 19, 2020, 3:14 PM ET

Vikings re-signed K Dan Bailey to a three year, $10 million contract.

Bailey can make up to $12 million by meeting certain field goal percentage incentives. The nine-year veteran has posted 84% field goal and 93% extra point rates for the Vikings over the last two seasons.

Cowboys signed K Greg Zuerlein, formerly of the Rams, to a three-year, $7.5 million contract.

Zuerlein rejoins his former special teams coach with the signing. It's a great landing spot for fantasy purposes, assuming his 2019 foot injury is behind him. Zuerlein made 90% of his field goal attempts in the three years before last season's 73% field goal percentage.

Free agent K Adam Vinatieri remains undecided on returning for the 2020 season.

Colts coach Frank Reich made the disclosure in a Tuesday "digital press conference." "(We plan) to have a sitdown with Adam and see where he’s at once he’s a little further along in that process," Reich said of Vinatieri's recovery from knee surgery. Turning 48 in December, 2020 would be Vinatieri's staggering 25th season. Season 24, of course, went exceptionally poorly. Vinatieri converted at least 85 percent of his field goal attempts every season from 2013-18, however. A bounce back would be far from surprising.

Giants re-signed K Aldrick Rosas to a one-year, $3.259 million contract.

It's the value of the second-round RFA tender.  Rosas attempted just 17 field goals last season for the lowly Giants, missing five of them and going 1-of-5 from 40-plus yards out.  However, he did drill 35-of-39 extra points and performs pretty well on kickoffs.  He won't be guaranteed to make the team if the Giants find a cheaper rookie kicker.

Free agent Stephen Gostkowski has no plans to retire.

36-year-old Gostkowski was cut from the Patriots after missing 12 games last year. He's coming off hip surgery, so it could be awhile before teams can bring him in for a physical. Gostkowski should eventually resurface despite a down 2019. He made 87% of his field goals during his 14 years in New England.

Rams signed K Austin MacGinnis, formerly of the XFL's Dallas Renegades.

MacGinnis, 25 next month, drilled all 10 of his field goals with the Renegades before the league collapsed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Previously, MacGinnis was with the AAF's Memphis Express last spring before that league went bankrupt.  MacGinnis has never kicked in the NFL.  He will compete with Lirim Hajrullahu to replace Greg Zuerlein in L.A. after Zuerlein signed with the Cowboys.  Hajrullahu was also signed Monday out of the CFL.  The Rams may not be done at kicker.
