I had him ranked as my 5th WR going into the season. Moss, Cjohnson, OWens and Holt ahead of him. So needless to say, i ended up with him in most of my 8 leagues. Actually, 3 of the leagues are dynasties, 2 if which are 3 years old, i took Smith in both in late rounds 12-15th round range(traded him in one a couple years back), and took him in the 5th round of a new dynasty this year. Feels good now to those who laughed at my man crush on Steve Smith, including these guys.

I'll help out BnB while he's on "vacation"

Smith had a VERY disappointing game against one of the worst secondaries in the league this week.

However, after 4 games, he has 25 receptions for 354 yards and 4 TDs, which puts him on pace for:

100 receptions, 1416 yards, and 16 TDs

he's also the #4 ranked fantasy WR.

If a team like Green Bay can shut this guy down, what does that say for his prospects going forward? After his huge week 3, seems like he can now expect to face double teams every week. While fantasy owners love the huge weeks he put up in weeks 1 and 3...I'm guessing they weren't so happy with the low totals in weeks 2 and 4.

 
Aaron, the Packers completely sold out to stop Smith last night. They doubled him constantly and even triple-teamed him at times. It was obvious they were not going to let Smith beat them. To Delhomme's credit, he didn't force the issue to Smith (although I do think he should've gone to him a little more) and he went to the open man. As a result, Colbert had a solid game and he hit two TEs for TDs. If defenses continue to try this approach and Delhomme makes them pay, they'll have to re-think their approach and that will free up Smith again. Also, Smith dropped one pass that would've went for 20-25 yards. Not that it would've given him a great night but it would've helped his owners out a little bit.

 
IMO, his greatest value in that game was NOT in catching passes - it was in taking two guys downfield with him every play.Did you notice how often Colbert was able to get open in one on one coverage - and there is a reason so many passes went to the TEs and why both runners had ample room to run.SSmith is an elite NFL WR - if he doesn't have too many nights like last night, he is an elite fantasy WR, too.

I'm not rooting against the guy or anything and I saw the same things you did. If teams don't begin to respect some of the Panthers other weapons in the passing game, they ALL will sell out to stop Steve Smith. I think it might be tough for him to keep up this pace going forward, but the up-down-up-down numbers probably aren't doing fantasy owners too many favors either.
 
this being, in essence, a fantasy thread, SSmith getting doubled is no good for anyone unless Delhomme gets him the ball anyway.Teams would double up on Harrison and Moss for years, but they'd still get their numbers.In fantasy terms, I agree with Aaron.In NFL terms, SSmith is an elite WR and I have trouble seeing him not getting his numbers more often - double teamed or not.

I've watched all of Carolina's games this season & he's been double-teamed a lot. He's extremely hard to stop. That said, elite WRs have bad games. Whether by gameplan or other circumstances, it happens. Anyway, you can bet he'll be featured much more next week. I'm not saying he'll have a big game, but he's a mortal lock for top-10 this year & has a very good chance to be top-5, IMO. As far as being up & down on a weekly basis (FF points), that tends to even out over the course of the season. I believe this guy will be good enough help carry a bunch of FF teams to a playoff berth.

Sorry, LOL. I've been saying it since the '04 season ended, though, so that cancels the jinx. ;)

Did you notice how often Colbert was able to get open in one on one coverage - and there is a reason so many passes went to the TEs and why both runners had ample room to run.

SSmith is an elite NFL WR - if he doesn't have too many nights like last night, he is an elite fantasy WR, too.

Delhomme was rarely pressured too (which might of actually hurt Smith).

In any case, just keeping things in check.

 
and as for "ample room to run" for the RBs... the longest run by either RB was 11 yards. what 'room' are you referring to? every time DeShaun came around the corner on a run of 4 to 9 yards, he was met by OLBs and CBs... (who should of been alleged triple-coverage on Smith).I won't go into the number of carries for negative yards, or 0 or 1... cause that's not your point, nor mine

After seeing some of the other Smith threads, all I can say is that Aaron is a class act for helping out around here.I was at the game last night and very disappointed with the lack of targets to Smith. That said, Marc is right on target. Funny how being at the game lets you see the whole field. I remember one specific play where two Panther WRs were running free with no one within 15 yards of them...in the middle of the field.

Well, considering the week before when he had a 1 and 3 yard TD, I'd say he gets a fair share of red zone looks. Last night Delhomme lobbed one to him as he sped towards the goal line but was swamped by two defenders. He just didn't catch the breaks against the Pack. As someone mentioned he dropped one for a sizable gain, and then there was the ridiculous pass interference incident where he had beaten his man badly and got karate chopped as the ball was coming. AND he had just blown up the week before so the Pack were throwing the kitchen sink at him. AND the Panthers had a monsterous lead so Delhomme wasn't airing it out. The situation dictated his performance more than anything.When the score is even or the Panthers are behind, Smith will get his. His freakish break-away ability makes every single catch a legitimate oppurtunity to score.

You should guess people also haven't been happy with some of Marvin Harrison's weeks too, including todays.
 
Smith was the #1 fantasy WR yesterday, finishing with 8 receptions, 119 yards, and 2 TDs.

On the year, he now has 33 receptions, 473 yards, and 6 TDs.

He's currently the #1 ranked fantasy WR on the year and is on pace for:

105 receptions, 1513 yards, 19 TDs

for comparison purposes, Muhsin Muhammad finished last year with 93 receptions, 1405 yards, and 16 TDs. After 5 games in 2004 though, Muhammad only had 20 receptions, 262 yards, and 2 TDs.

I expect Smith to cool off to finish a little closer to my pre-season projections as defenses devote Moss like attention to Smith the rest of the year. He will also need the opposition to show up for the game to push the Panther's offense.

 
I only have one caveat about Steve Smith.

His breakout season was largely due to the presence of the playaction generated from a strong running game. Since he only has one good season under his belt, how he would've been affected under last year's circumstances (which seem repeatable since the RBs are exactly the same), are an unknown.

That said, he's the most talented WR on his team and if the running game fails, I'd expect Delhomme to look to him.

Then again, you never know with these things.

I'd say that he doesn't need playaction to generate offense at this point.

Scary thing in what I've seen is that defenses are already covering him pretty darn well, he just manages to get open. And his qb has faith in him...record breaking year? Probably not, but one of the best WR years in recent history: my eight ball says yes. Thanks again for the slap that kept me from trading this guy earlier in the season when my qb status was crap. :thumbup:

FBG Projections: 77-1030-8 - TDs surpassed in game 8, yards surpassed in game 10, receptions still in the air.

Little joy in Panther land this week save a can of Smith hash that the Midway grinches left behind after giving the Cats a : topcat : :topcat: . Those that got to watch Smith play yesterday were treated to one of his best performances. The only thing that can stop Steve Smith is a BnB appearence at a home game (ref. GB and NYJ). Despite double coverage Smith still gets open deep and it's been a rare occasion that he doesn't make the CB miss on a hitch. I'm pretty confident in saying that Smith is now the second or third best WR in the league behind CJ and possibly Holt.

 
The man is unstoppable. Hands of glue and acceleration like a jackrabbit.He will be the #1 Wr taken in drafts next year.

Interesting defense the Bears played on him. Single coverage - just don't give up the big play to him - while the pass rushers did their thing.

That touchdown yesterday was absolutely amazing. Never seen someone catch a pass and take off so incredibly powerful & fast.

In my local league (8 Team), I drafted him in the last round, dropped him right after draft to pick up Tony Gonzalez (we don't play sep TE) :eek: :cry: , but then picked him up again when my 1st WR (Javon Walker) went down...Only later did I hear that the Commissioner tried to pick him up but had problems with their computer...I beat picking him up by 30 minutes ;)

 
I'm sure it's just because I'm a Panther fan, but he's becoming the Michael Jordan of football for me. You just know something great is gonna happen whenever he touches the ball. I just love watching him play.Here's hoping he develops that killer winning instinct that brings the Panthers multiple championships! :banned:

It's going to be awfully hard to argue against him being WR1 next year.
