Was at our local Target last nite for some other stuff and the place was decimated. Saw a picture on FB of the Wegmans and the TP sections were empty.

I've never been to Jiffy Lube Live, but I'm planning to take my kids (12 and 10) for a concert there this summer. Are lawn seats the way to go? Or is it worth springing for the pricier seats? (I see there's a general admission section right in front of the stage but my wife said no way to that).

Is the concert on a weekend? That place is a disaster to get to on a weeknight with the commuters heading west.

It's on a Friday night during the summer. I'm resigned to a long journey out there, just trying to figure out what tickets to buy.

Does pricier seats = pavilion (covered)? I've always sat on the lawn (GA) but covered will protect you from the inevitable summer thunderstorm.

I've never been there but I'm assuming the non-lawn seats are covered. I should probably try to find some pictures.

Part of my motivation for lawn seats is so that if my kids want to seem cool, like they're going to a concert without their parents, they could set up their seats somewhere close enough to me so I can keep tabs on them but not close enough so I'm actually sitting with them.

ETA: Just looked at google images. Looks like all non-lawn seats are covered.

I've only sat in the Pavillion at JLL, so don't have any experience on what it's like on the lawn. I would think, with kids and weather permitting, that the lawn might serve better.

#WMATA Metrorail will close 11pm Friday for the entire weekend. Won't reopen till Monday, Metro says

#WMATA Metro bus will stop at 5pm Friday for the entire weekend.

So much for my exciting plan to sit on the glass/courtside for the Caps and Wiz games this weekend. At least this (presumably) means we're looking at an early departure tomorrow, if not a cancellation. Can't really keep people all day and then ask them to get home if the buses aren't running.

Don't know if anyone saw the score but the Caps won 7-1 against Ottawa. AO had goals 500 and 501. This team is scary good, especially offensively. Anything less than the Cup would be a disappointment.
Watched the entire game knowing Ovie would make it happen. The best part wasn't even the goal scored but how the team reacted after he scored by all rushing the ice to congratulate him.Very special moment for a very special player.Caught a T.J. Oshie interview after the game and he said the guys had talked it over(without Ovie knowing of course)and this was the plan all along.

If you get a chance to listen to John Walton's call of the goal it will send chills down your spine.Great night to be a Caps fan.
I liked Backstrom saying it was like having 20 Ovechkins celebrate a goal.
I just looked it up. Absolutely brilliant commentary. Never been a hockey guy until last couple of years after football has started to go a little flat for me. This team has been a blast to watch. I know they have had disappointments in the past but I think this year will be different. Just hope they stay healthy going into the postseason.

We've already received permission to telework tomorrow regardless of whether OPM announces unscheduled telework or not. And, yeah, I've always assumed OPM and WMATA (among others) work together when making certain decisions so this could be an indicator that the feds shutdown early. Not that that helps me too much since I have to telework (or take leave) when government closes for weather.

Fairfax County Schools have already closed tomorrow.

Most entertaining aspect of the storm so far is the District of Columbia v. the Washington Capitals/NHL:

"If the Capitals decide to bring their players in here and put them in danger...I'm not going to tell the NHL what to do." - DCEMA Spokesman

Yesterday at work a woman brought a snow-blower into the office. I have no idea why, especially because it didn't snow, but she said she wanted to be prepared.

EatBar Returns – This Time in Barracks Row

The name of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s new Barracks Row eatery/bar is a familiar one to many “foodies” inside the Beltway- EatBar- the same as the group’s popular Clarendon/Lyon Park eatery that garnered accolades from 2007 until closing in late 2014. This news comes from a recent liquor license trade name change that was approved (see page 17) on Wednesday.

Located in the old Kraze Burgers spot at 415 8th St. SE (between D & E streets, less than a block from the Eastern Market Metro stop), this 40-50 seat spot comes from the group well known for places like Red Apron, Churchkey, Iron Gate, and Bluejacket. Expect meat-focused dishes and a solid beer, wine, and cocktail list at EatBar, as detailed in this “exclusive” scoop (sorry Jessica Sidman) given to Tim Carman at at the Post in June 2015. According to Carman’s piece, Nathan Anda, the new point man for the Barracks Row project, helmed the original EatBar until 2008, so he appears to be returning to his roots with NRG.

The Post article said the unnamed spot would open later in 2015-obviously this didn’t happen-and a recent visit to this location didn’t reveal much obvious work being done. Currently, this block is home to some of the neighborhood’s more downscale establishments ( Popeye’s, Pizza Boli’s) as well as quite a bit of loitering, so it will be interesting to see how this will transform the block (an &Pizza is supposedly coming soon as well).

Hey Sebowski me and some buddies went out to Ocelot on Friday night. Pretty nice set up you guys have. I had one Little Black Book but the main focus was on Kerri's Cure. You're probably aware of that brew but if not here is some info: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/beer-of-the-week-kerris-cure-belgian-pale-ale/2016/01/23/715cf554-c081-11e5-bcda-62a36b394160_story.html

The brewery is a little off of the beaten path for me since I'm in Arlington but I'm sure I'll be out there again at some point.

Immediate recognition of todays Google Doodle by this former PG county resident.

Who else didnt need to hover over the doodle to know his name?

Has anyone eaten at Wildfire in Tysons Galleria? Thinking about giving it a try.
Will double check with wife after work today. She works in Tysons.
Jim, Google 'Lettuce Entertain You' - they are a corportate multi-concept chain based out of Chicago. Wildfire is simply one iteration of their usual theme. Boring, corporate, dreck with no ambition, philosophy or soul behind it. I'm not going to call it overpriced, although generally every corporate restaurant in Tyson's is, but it definitely 'lacks value'...before committing to spending (I'd call it wasting, but that's my biased opinion), your hard earned food dollars on a place like that, why don't you tell me a little more about what you're into, and what proximity to Tyson's Corner you'd be interested in finding a restaurant, and I'll give you 5 or so recommendations where your money will be better spent, and you will probably wind up eating better from a satisfaction and value standpoint, but your meal will probably be a hell of a lot more interesting as well.

Nathan Anda is a very talented Chef and Tallula/EatBar under his helm was pretty darn good. He's one of the better charcuterie crafters in the greater DC area, without a doubt.

Thanks Johnny, I was hoping you would respond.

I think someone posted a request in here not long ago where they were looking for a very good upscale restaurant and weren't concerned about price, just wanted the restaurant to be casual attire (I believe that was the request). I'll have to review what you suggested then, but my request would be similar, except that price is a concern for us. Basically a really good nice place for special occasions that doesn't require a tie and jacket for dining. We're near Fairfax City and don't really want to have to go into DC so I thought maybe the Tysons area would offer something. I know there are good places in Alexandria, but even driving there requires quite a bit of time for us. My geographic limits probably rule out most everything, and if that is the case then we will stick to our usual establishments. Just wanted to see if there is something out there that I'm not familiar with that would be a good spot for my wife and I when we want to go someplace "special" without having to get all dressed up.

I should add that we are definitely not foodies and our tastes in food are not very adventurous.

C.C., this is the first I've seen your post. Been a tough day, woke up to text that close local friend, a football friend, had passed. Still in quite a funk...

If it's not too late for Vienna, Clarity Bistro is exactly what you're looking for. If you have a less than satisfactory meal there, I'd be very surprised. Rock Star pairing of culinary talent in that kitchen. For exactly what you are looking for (expense account dining where you actually feel like you ate cuisine worthy of expense account prices rather than expense account rents), there's not that much to be had in that area.

Legal Seafood. Damn, that's bad...and too bad. You were right in the neighborhood of 2941. Bertrand Chemel. Hard to beat.

I have no complaints about Maple Avenue Restaurant, but I don't think it's what you're looking for, but Tim Ma's other restaurant in that general area, Water & Wall, might be:

http://waterandwall.com/... then again, probably not upscale enough...but it's what's around.

This is the best in (ETA) that general area, but lately, the reviews have not been superlative, as they absolutely must be, when you aspire to greatness. (ETA) Oh, crap, I forgot you didn't want to dress up.

I'm really distracted by the events of today. I'm going to post this and then go back and read your other posts, and post again.

I have never, and I mean never, ever, failed to find what people are looking for in terms of dining in the DC area, especially when price tag isn't a deterrent, and I'd really like to know if anything I may have recommended during your last visit didn't live up to expectations, because I take that kind of thing personally, and I know my Chef peers in the area do the same...

...caveat, you are catching me at a tough time, all things considered...but I probably can use the distraction, as it's just me and (since you bring up a somewhat non-mainstream grape like Arneis (Roero, please, you little rascal) a bottle of Assyrtiko (Santorini) just whiling away the hours remembering my friend as he'd want it: with a football game on...any football game. Ugh...
2941 is THE favorite of the Northrop folks, walking distance from offices. So this is fantastic stuff nittany. Thank you thank you. I'm off to Annapolis so won't be posting much but I will report back in a day or so after trying one of these suggestions.
Jim, this is the post you're looking for, I think. See the bolded, check out the link below the bolded, and let give me your :2cents: about the menu and price. From your last post, I think this would probably be on the high end of your price range, and possibly over the line of adventurous, but it'll give me a reference point to work with. Although my standards are very high, they're all about quality of ingredients, and perceived value, so I have favorites in every price point and style of cooking, I'm sure I can find something I'd gamble on you enjoying, and I'm happy to try and help!

The primary problem with a decent restaurant (by my standards) getting established and having long-term success in Tyson's Corner has 100% to do with the rents and the commercial real estate brokers. It's almost impossible for a chef/restauranteur with any degree of business acumen and brutal self-honesty (two things that are every bit as important, if not more so, than technical culinary chops or cultured service) to write a fact-based, math based business plan and project any degree of success. The numbers just don't add up, and I know that from firsthand experience writing business plans using real numbers...

...well, let me check that. You COULD write a successful business plan, but to make the numbers work, you'd absolutely have to price-gouge, and that's where I stop doing the math, because I have a massive problem with that, and people who do that, from an ethical and integrity standpoint. I'm as much a free-market guy as anyone, but there's a difference, however minute, between 'whatever the market will bear', and just flat out gouging people because one can (largely because those people have deep pockets, and don't know any better). There's a tremendous amount of that going on in Tyson's, which is why one of the major factors contributing to me having a positive impression of a place is 'perceived value', based on my own significant amount of experience with being able to know 'value' when I see it. Every time someone takes me up on a recommendation, I'm hoping that when they reflect back on their dining experience, they're not only satisfied with the food and service, but with what they paid to get it...and if they don't have an ideal experience, that maybe they'd be willing to give the restaurant another shot if I suggest they do after they tell me their issues, and I think they can be explained or rectified.

Not sure how many folks know this, but when it comes to place like Tyson's Corner, or more egregiously, Rockville, where I live, almost 100% of the national multi-unit chains (think TGI Friday's, for example) are losing money operating those stores, but it's more important for them to have a footprint in those areas (and it makes business sense for their brand), than to make money in that individual location, which they can justify as a 'loss leader', because the huge margins and large numbers they are doing in other areas where the rents are lower, and the choices fewer, and the guests aren't as discerning, or caring, about quality, are more than making up for the individual loss that the one unit is generating.

Problem is, most savvy commercial real estate brokers/landlords in those areas know this, and they also know that a corporate with deep pockets is a much safer risk (again, that's solid business acumen on their parts) and there's little to no pressure from the local Chambers of Commerce or those involved with local government or large owners of commercial property who value local small business development, to give small, local chef-driven businesses an opportunity to operate...that's why Montgomery County, MD, where I live, and where I'd LIKE to do business one day, is the absolute suck. They don't hate small business, but you sure wouldn't know it if you stepped off a bus with a legitimate business plan in hand that was designed to earn you an income and treat your guests/customers fairly...ugh, I didn't mean to go off on this tangent, but this is what happens sometimes when I actually have time to post...anyway, I'll be back later to offer something about greater Fairfax City area...in the meantime, what are some of the places locally that you already frequent, and enjoy? That would give me something to work with as well...

^^Check out Clarity in Vienna, about 10 minutes south down route 123 from Wildfire.

Glad you made it out! We put a lot of work into that space. Good to hear you liked it. We had a record weekend, so I hope it was staffed enough for you to get good service. We are starting to add staff to keep up. We have a growing Arlington presence too, so look for us at the local spots. I'll be out there for the anniversary in May. Keep you guys posted.

Cheers

Thanks Johnny, that was the post. The price range at Clarity looks fine to me, but the menu is probably a little adventurous for us, which probably sounds stupid. We primarily eat at chains since that is what we know. Our favorite place that isn't a chain (as far as I know) is RT's in Alexandria. Wish there was something like that closer to us. When we used to go into DC for dinners we liked I Ricchi and Taberna del Alabardero. but we haven't been to either of those in many years. Recently we went to Agua 301 and really liked that. Hopefully that gives you an idea of what we like. We've been thinking about trying some place at Mosaic but haven't looked at all of the places there yet.

The Fairfax City area seems to have its own problems with restaurants. Not sure if it is rents or taxes, but we've seen even chain restaurants close their locations in this area. Thanks for the feedback on what it is like in Tysons and Rockville.

I would love to see NitLion sketch out a restaurant crawl. Like a 7 day dining extravaganza. The best 7 meals in DC. Something like that.

Might be fun to give that to my wife for Valentine's Day.

Yep the staff was great, I had no complaints. It was an interesting mix of people, I'm sure due mainly to the benefit night/Kerri's Cure.

Brother just recently landed in D.C. He works for the Veterans Affairs there and has been wanting to work there for some time. I couldn't be happier for him. He lives in Alexandria and takes the train into work, loves the commute, never gets into a car. Bit of a snow storm last week, worst he had ever seen and he lived in Germany for 3 years.

I will be going to visit obviously and site see. DC-ites you been warned, the MOP is a coming.

So uncle Ted wants to bring arena football to the phone booth. How well will non-Snyder owned football be received?
Would be interesting. Not sure if the area will really get behind an AFL team, but who knows.

Saw the Sports Bog is asking readers for some name ideas. I could see the Warriors being a contender. I do like the suggestion of bringing back Bullets though.

Doesn't Synder own the Washington Warriors trademark?

I think this could be cool. I tend to get into most DC sports, so I could see myself being hooked somewhat quickly. I'll be interested to see what ticket pricing is like. If it's like NBA or NHL, then I'm out.

Nevermind:

Washington Warriors

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder bought the expansion rights to an Arena Football League franchise for approximately $4 million in 1999 and planned to call the team the the Warriors. Snyder applied for a trademark registration for “Washington Warriors” a few months later, but the team, which was scheduled to begin play in 2003, never came to fruition. Snyder has since abandoned the Warriors trademark.

Can we go with "Les Boulez?"

Nice column from the DC Sports Bog today:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2016/02/22/if-you-cant-enjoy-this-capitals-season-maybe-sports-fandom-isnt-for-you/

Pretty much sums up how I feel about watching each Caps game. I was actually not unhappy the other night when they blew the late lead, because I knew it meant the enjoyment of watching them win in overtime. Every thing about this season has been a joy.

42-10-4? That's unfathomable. Of course it can all end in crushing chokedom again. But that's no reason not to enjoy what's happening right now. As Steinberg says, DC hasn't seen a season like this since the 91 Skins. So take advantage of it while it lasts.

They currently have like a 98% chance of winning the Presidents' Trophy, which is pretty absurd in February.

I'll be in Ottawa in early June. I hope I get to watch some Caps Stanley Cup games while in Canada.

I tracked down this thread to post this.  Steinz is the best, and this might be my favorite Post sports column in years. Great in both theory and practice- hoping it shuts up the nattering nabobs of negativism in the media at least until April. Let our city enjoy something it's seen far too little of over the last 40 years: an awesome and likable sports team.

Suggestions for a last supper with a spouse before a parasite pops out of her which will inhibit our ability to have a nice dinner for several years?  I'm thinking of getting out of the city a little bit while the time allows it, and since we didn't get the chance for a baby moon.  Trummer's on Main is one that I'm thinking of.  Is that worth it?  Other suggestions?

FWIW, my wife is partial to steak and since she can't have wine, I guess I'll at least let her have steak.
