Doesn't 18 look like one of the easiest holes on the tour? Shows how pressure on the big stage comes into play. Spieth and Day could go out tomorrow and birdie that hole 4 out of 5 times I bet. Spieth walked it off to what, 90ish yards? He wanted to pitch it over the back of the flag and spin it back. Just didn't hit it far enough. Day did a nice job of that but it didn't spin like Jordan's did.
Well, we finally got a good look at just how close that pin was to the edge of the false front and how much it drops off. While it might look easy, you've got to have the perfect yardage which requires you to hit the correct tee shot. If Spieth hits his drive straight on 18, he probably birdies and wins, but his hooked drive put him in between clubs.

I don't know about the between clubs thing. These guys are brilliant with a wedge (gap, sand, lob, pitching) from 80-110 yards. He walked it off and had a plan. I don't think he meant to hit it right next to the stick or shorter because of the false front you mentioned. I think he mi#### his shot short and think he meant to hit it past the flag and spin it back. Just didn't execute imo.

He backed off at least once due to cameras in the gallery behind him. Just have to wonder if that was somewhere in his head during his backswing... hoping a camera doesn't go off or something.

That's what he said in his interview.

these prima donnas need to get over the fact that there is going to be some noise when they are playing a round of golf in front of a large audience.

You dont get to that level without being able to completely reset after distractions. The camera thing was surely annoying, but ultimately irrelevant.

Oh.. I didn't see his interview but I'm sure we can agree that he'd like to have that approach shot back. Still, the guy is relentless out there and is going to win a ton of weekends. Can't wait for the PGA championship.

As they said umpteen times in the broadcast, the only defense the R&A had was pin placement. IMO, the only reason they play at St. Andrews is because of the history.

agreed. You could play a drinking game following Spieth. Take a shot every time his caddy says "Guys, come on.. cameras, please."

Well, that and it's widely regarded as one of the best golf courses in the world.

Speaking of playing with distractions behind you, how bout the old footage of Tom Watson? He hit a shot and the crowd took off all around him heading toward the shot. A cop walked in front of the golfer to keep people away. In the old days they could just walk on the course like that? Spieth wouldn't like that at all...

Exactly. I don't get the desire that courses need to be played to par by the professionals. They're the best in the world for a reason. Also, we are having a great run of tournaments where the leaderboard is full of the best players in the world. Hard to knock a tournament that brings that out. Who cares if winner shoots -12.

They used to allow that on the final hole with the final pairing.

further along these lines, its the first one. also a course doesn't have to be super hard to be great.
....and it's back open to the public today. that's pretty cool.

When did that stop? I think they allowed it for Tigers last win there.

12 under is fine. 15 is a bit too low though :)

You know I'm not really sure. I can't recall the last time I saw it happen.

Not to mention half the time when they try to make the course super hard, they end up mickey-mousing it to a point where some guys lose their chance to win on a random bounce or slope.

Love St. Andrews but I was very disappointed to see what they did to the road hole bunker. Changed it so it collects more shots but it's way easier to get out of it. Really wish they would have left it alone.

You'd be surprised how noisy it actually is when hitting. It's the sounds that pop above the normal buzz that throws the off

In checking out possibly playing St Andrews I thought it was interesting that if you play it from Nov-March you likely have to use a fairway mat during your round. Any ball in the fairway is picked and placed on a fairway mat you carry with you and you hit off that. Anything not in the fairway you can play where it lies. Helps keep the course in good shape when it's most vulnerable.

Can you skull a 7 iron?

Can you make a shoe stink?

I would just pick up any shot that landed in the fairway and place it just off the fairway and hit from there.

The mat probably helps when there's snow on the ground, though.

Isn't there only 1 day you can call to make any tee time, in Sept?
