The San Diego LB situation (1 Viewer)

I know it is difficult to know anything until free agency but do you see anything out of either Donald Butler or James Mouton this season?

Whomever earns an every-down job in San Diego is going to have value. It could be Butler or Mouton, it could be Siler or Burnett. I'd very tentatively put Butler at the top of the list (been in the system for a year, a front office favorite, rehab seems to be going well, veterans seem unlikely to be signed), but could make a persuasive argument for any of the four.

Two nights ago, I scouted the LB free agents, and it's super deep!

Barrett Ruud, Chad Greenway, Clint Session, Dhani Jones, Ernie Sims, James Anderson, Julian Peterson, Justin Durant, Kamerion Wimbley, Kevin Burnett, Kirk Morrison, LaMarr Woodley, LeRoy Hill, Manny Lawson, Matt Roth, Mike Peterson, Paul Posluszny, Quincy Black, Rocky McIntosh, Stephen Cooper, Stephen Nicholas, Stephen Tulloch, Stewart Bradley, Takeo Spikes, Tamba Hali, Thomas Davis

I think it would be in the Chargers best interest to sign one of the middle-guys as opposed to letting a rookie drafted after the second round become an immediate starter.

The FA signing period is going to be crazy. What will it be before training camp-1 week? Add to these -people like Barnett that could be cut.

So they sign Takeo and they also want to bring back Kevin Burnett. Assuming Stephen Cooper is gone, where does this leave Siler? Out in the cold?

Does Spikes signing make him the 3 down WILB LB to target? Or is that Burnett's spot if he is resigned?

Seemed clear that the Chargers didn't want Cooper back, don't trust Siler as a starter and thought Burnett's asking price too high. Spikes will help with the transition to the youngsters and still played at a pretty high level last year.

I didn't like Mouton at SILB anyway. It'll be Spikes at SILB, possibly every down, and a battle royale between Butler, Mouton and possibly Siler or another vet signing at WILB.
