The Stand Will Now Begin With An Eight Episode Mini-Series Leading Into The Film

Josh Boones massive adaptation of Stephen Kings controversial classic, The Stand, just got a little bit bigger. Instead of one three-hour feature, the project will now kick off with an 8-episode mini-series for Showtime. The Wrap broke the news of the miniseries, a co-production between Warner Bros and CBS, which will be one cohesive shoot starting early next year.

Matthew McConaughey is already on board as King mega villain Randall Flagg, but The Wrap adds that the production seeks to bring in an A-list cast to fill the rest of the cast:

A miniseries will allow Boone to cover more of Kings epic book than one three-hour movie. The same thinking was once applied to Kings Dark Tower series, which never got off the ground, though The Stand offers an ensemble-driven story that may be better suited for a groundbreaking adaptation envisioned here.

King is expected to be involved in some capacity along with producers Roy Lee and Jimmy Miller, and high-level meetings among the filmmaking team are taking place next week to finalize the ambitious multi-platform plan. Top talent agents have already been notified, as Boone is expected to set his sights on several A-listers, many of whom have become more interested in doing limited TV in the wake of HBOs True Detective.

Boone is jumping onto this before he begins work on the X-Men spin-off New Mutants for Fox, keeping his schedule fairly stuffed for the next few years. Anything could change obviously, especially considering the constantly shifting nature of Kings adaptations, but things seem to be on track for now. The casting process should be an interesting one.

They already did a series on The Stand. The only actor I really liked was the guy who's only words were "Moon"

I thought the book was excellent until they started getting into the devil thing. Would have preferred them following a "Lucifer's Hammer" type of story.

I think the MM casting is great. I can see him killing it playing Flagg.

MM playing Randall Flagg is worth the price of admission right there. Hope this actually happens. Stand and Dark Tower rumors are just that, nobody can seem to keep these movies/mini-series together. Lots of talk so far.

The Stand is a much more viable project than DT, which is an extremely ambitious undertaking to do right.

I think I asked before but is Wind Through The Keyhole worth reading?
It's like a story within a story within a story. Not really much to do with our ka-tet if I remember.

The last book in the DT series kinda sucked, too.
KINDA?
Been a few years since I read it but remember it being good for the first half and then just ludicrous towards the end.?
Greatest ending ever.
You have to admit that erasing the Crimson King was pretty lame.
But he's not really erased, since the loop repeats, or rather Roland enters some parallel existence or part of the tower?

Doesn't make the erasing any less ludicrous.

I just finished the first part

I can see Deborah Ann Woll as a prefect Frannie. She is a little older, but that is who I have in my head while I read.

I know that King thought Springsteen would be good for Larry but he is too old now. I am picturing Adam Levine.

I like Norman Reedus for Lloyd. I have an image of an actor for Stu but I dont know the guys name

Off to book 2

I didn't think the old miniseries was bad at all. Sure, some of the special effects weren't great, but it wasn't horrible for tv in that era. And I thought the cast was pretty good overall.

It was pretty well done for what it was (broadcast tv). I agree that most of the casting was good. That kid who played Harold was horrible though.

It wasn't terrible but I honestly didn't like Randall Flagg's casting. Thought most of the CO contingent was cast well and loved the trashcan man and Tom Cullen. But Flagg threw it off for me.

Matthew Mcconaughey as Randall Flagg would be amazing. Absolutely perfect casting.
