I wasn't aware of that. That is awesome if true! It means the politicians can still please their constituents by opposing raising the debt ceiling, but it will get raised anyhow? Debt matters. But the debt ceiling is an irrational and unworkable means to deal with it.

Why does somebody have to be a "survivalist" to be prepared? The fact that people who simply follow a Calvinist style work ethic and save for a rainy day are considered to be the fringe just goes to show how far this nation has fallen.

The article (National Journal) doesn't stipulate whether it's for the Feb 7 increase only, or future debt limit increases. Hopefully it's the latter. Either way, it's a great start. Imagine what it would take to not raise the debt ceiling- a veto proof margin in both chambers? I can almost guarantee that will NEVER happen.

I said I'd accept the accusation- I wouldn't necessarily own up to it.

But I don't care. Call me whatever you want. I'm extremely happy and relieved that a deal has been done. Unlike many of you, I wasn't 100% sure. I was about 90% sure. But that 10% made me extremely nervous.

Is this true in general going forward? Or just for the debt increase in February? I had the impression it was just a one off, but if it's every time it would be huge news (so huge I can't believe we're not hearing more about it).

Yes I know.. unfortunately Right now the way it is setup they have no choice.. If you want the you have to align yourself with one side or the other.

I find it encouraging that they simply list their party. If they were all Independents or Green Partiers or something, you could be confident that they would have absolutely no ability to get anything done.

Though I'm a little disappointed that none of them spoke up on a national stage (at least I didn't hear anything) and call out this mess while pimping their group. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to appeal to the moderate nature of the nation and recruit some attention.

Debt matters. But the debt ceiling is an irrational and unworkable means to deal with it.

The debt ceiling is meant to prevent %entity% from going so far into debt that they will be unable to ever pay the creditor back. Since we just decided to abolish the cap, we have pretty much decided that whatever we may owe is irrelevant and therefore hold unlimited borrowing capacity/unlimited line of credit with zero obligation to actually repay or worry about our tally. Since we are only promising to pay the minimum each month and that seems to not be enough of a catastrophe when compared to defaulting, I say #### it let's just pay for it all on the card and tap that minimum from now until the sun explodes.Schlzm

Now the question is: who will blink first? I can't imagine that Obama would EVER agree to make substantial changes to Obamacare. You're not an unreasonable guy Rich. Can you think of a situation in which it would be to our nations advantage not to raise the debt ceiling? If so, then explain it because I can't think of one. If not then why have it?

I believe that if we keep increasing the debt willy-nilly with no attempt to ever bring it under control, there will come a time when it would be worse for us, but better for our children and their children, to let the chips fall where they may, swallow our medicine now, in the hopes that it can fix things down the road. I don't know when that time will come, nor I am certain that we will necessarily recognize the time when it does come, but I'm reasonably certain that it will come if we continue on the road we're on. When the time does come, I'd like there to be a mechanism by which the responsible adults in the room can force the irresponsible ones to swallow their medicine.
