The Tea Party is back in business! (2 Viewers)

So I saw it said that the Government will remain open until January 15th. And the debt limit would be good until February 7th.

I think it's funny everyone is patting themselves on the back and congratulating each other over this. "Way to go, team! This problem will never again haunt us. At least not in the near future."
Depends on if this makes it into the final and how Congress acts next time:
The deal that the Senate is now getting set to roll out would include language for a "resolution of disapproval" that would allow Congress to disapprove of a debt-ceiling increase, as opposed to approving of one like it does now. That would mean that, as long as the debt-limit increase is not explicitly disapproved by both chambers with a veto-proof majority, the debt-limit would increase.
 I wasn't aware of that. That is awesome if true! It means the politicians can still please their constituents by opposing raising the debt ceiling, but it will get raised anyhow? That's totally brilliant. If that language goes through, then nobody can say this wasn't a victory for reasonable people everywhere. In effect, it gets rid of the debt ceiling.
Well ####. Since debt doesn't matter anymore why don't we just put everything on the cc? Why should I have to pay for anything since we just voted ourselves the most platinumiest black rewards extra miles extravaganza card?!? Schlzm

I don't know where JoJo got that quote, but if it's true that's the single biggest piece of news to come out of this entire situation. Can it possibly be true? (I probably should be more skeptical of JoJo's sources...)

Debt matters. But the debt ceiling is an irrational and unworkable means to deal with it.

Why does somebody have to be a "survivalist" to be prepared? The fact that people who simply follow a Calvinist style work ethic and save for a rainy day are considered to be the fringe just goes to show how far this nation has fallen.

And yes, I do own arable land with its own water source. It's called a farm. It's from where those grocery stores you urbanites think the food fairy lives in actually get their supplies.

Relying on savings after advocating violating the full faith and credit of the US dollar.

Thanks. It says:

The Senate-prepared deal will allow an extension of the debt limit until Feb. 7, subject to a congressional disapproval process similar to what was included in the Budget Control Act of 2011. Under that language, if the debt increase is not approved in both chambers—or is vetoed by the president and is not overridden—the debt limit would increase.

The article (National Journal) doesn't stipulate whether it's for the Feb 7 increase only, or future debt limit increases. Hopefully it's the latter. Either way, it's a great start. Imagine what it would take to not raise the debt ceiling- a veto proof margin in both chambers? I can almost guarantee that will NEVER happen.

I'd gladly accept being accused by Humpback and others as "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" if it turns out that a deal is made.
Time to update this.
 I said I'd accept the accusation- I wouldn't necessarily own up to it.

But I don't care. Call me whatever you want. I'm extremely happy and relieved that a deal has been done. Unlike many of you, I wasn't 100% sure. I was about 90% sure. But that 10% made me extremely nervous.

That's probably the best piece of legislation ever proposed by Mitch McConnell, by the way.

Is this true in general going forward? Or just for the debt increase in February? I had the impression it was just a one off, but if it's every time it would be huge news (so huge I can't believe we're not hearing more about it).

Curious at why you think I'm not Independent?
Well...

I just picture a cartoon out there somewhere with the skyline of Washington burning and nothing but rubble while two Democrats high five each other and say, "Yay! We won!"

Someone who can draw, get on it!
It is possible to make fun of one side, and not be affiliated with the other. I'm sure that comes as a big surprise to alot of partisan hacks out there. But there are millions of people who laugh at both sides and can clearly see how inept they both are at just about everything.

Can someone explain to me why we have a Democrat and a Republican party? What would happen if party affiliations were removed?
nolabels.org
Every one of those bios includes the party affiliation in the first sentence. Some people in this country still vote based on party.
Yes I know.. unfortunately Right now the way it is setup they have no choice.. If you want the :moneybag: you have to align yourself with one side or the other.

But at least those that have joined nolabels realize that it is time to "stop fighting, start fixing" and are trying to change...

Small steps grasshopper, small steps. ;)
I find it encouraging that they simply list their party. If they were all Independents or Green Partiers or something, you could be confident that they would have absolutely no ability to get anything done.

Though I'm a little disappointed that none of them spoke up on a national stage (at least I didn't hear anything) and call out this mess while pimping their group. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to appeal to the moderate nature of the nation and recruit some attention.
They tried.. But the National media basically ignored them as "compromise" is  to them.

Today, 52 members of Congress -- Democrats and Republicans -- stood together to call on leaders in Washington to stop fighting and start fixing.
Well I'll be. I never saw anything on this.
Yea, imagine that :(

BTW.. IMO it is worth 10 minutes to watch/listen to the video as they say what we all feel..

The debt ceiling is meant to prevent %entity% from going so far into debt that they will be unable to ever pay the creditor back. Since we just decided to abolish the cap, we have pretty much decided that whatever we may owe is irrelevant and therefore hold unlimited borrowing capacity/unlimited line of credit with zero obligation to actually repay or worry about our tally. Since we are only promising to pay the minimum each month and that seems to not be enough of a catastrophe when compared to defaulting, I say #### it let's just pay for it all on the card and tap that minimum from now until the sun explodes.Schlzm

Just changed the title of this thread since we're only 5 minutes away.

Now the question is: who will blink first? I can't imagine that Obama would EVER agree to make substantial changes to Obamacare. Which means the Republicans will eventually have to cave, maybe- but what if they don't? How long with this take to resolve, and how many people will be hurt in the meantime?
:lmao:

Senate just voted to reject the latest House proposal (which delayed the individual mandate for 1 year.)

2 hours 19 minutes left before shutdown.
:lmao:
The shutdown happened 2 hours and 19 minutes after that post. It cost us 20 billion dollars and created a lot of pain for a lot of people, and for no purpose: the people who did it gained none of their goals. Not sure what's funny about this.

I'm making fun of both parties in this situation. The smoldering mess would be caused by both parties. Should I add that two Republicans are seen in the background hanging their heads?

I think it's funny that anyone would think I'm a Republican. Or a Democrat for that matter. But believe what you'd like.

There is also your well-publicized opinion on the utility of poor people as a substitute for fossil fuels.

Whatever dude. I don't know why anyone would laugh over that, but to each their own I suppose.

Well. That was because I used to work for oil companies. Nothing to do with party affiliation. Also, I hate poor people.

He's mourning the death of his party and everyone mourns in their own way.

So we are all in agreement that thanks to the Republicans, we now have this new clause that keeps this from ever happening again, right?

Hooray, unlimited money for everyone! Nothing could possibly go wrong with that plan.
You're not an unreasonable guy Rich. Can you think of a situation in which it would be to our nations advantage not to raise the debt ceiling? If so, then explain it because I can't think of one. If not then why have it?

I believe that if we keep increasing the debt willy-nilly with no attempt to ever bring it under control, there will come a time when it would be worse for us, but better for our children and their children, to let the chips fall where they may, swallow our medicine now, in the hopes that it can fix things down the road. I don't know when that time will come, nor I am certain that we will necessarily recognize the time when it does come, but I'm reasonably certain that it will come if we continue on the road we're on. When the time does come, I'd like there to be a mechanism by which the responsible adults in the room can force the irresponsible ones to swallow their medicine.
