The term "scuffling" - when did this become common? (1 Viewer)

I can't stand the word, not sure why it bothers me but it does. I don't remember it being used much if at all to describe ballplayers while I was growing up. Players were "struggling" or "slumping", now everybody is "scuffling". I know it's a real word, and it makes sense in this usage, but I don't like it.

The other is "Dead red" indicating a fast ball. I've been watching baseball since before I could tie my shoes and I've never heard "dead red." Now, it's in every other Joe Morgan sentence. It comes across almost as a corporate edict to toss some new lingo in to broadcast to jazz it up. Very annoying.
