The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (16 Viewers)

What is White Lotus about, and what makes it so good? Can you watch each season independently?

I have 2 weeks of Max left, and thought i might try a limited series or a show with 30mins episodes before it goes away.

Don't start. It's well acted and written but goes nowhere. You keep waiting for something to happen and then it doesn't. Hard to really explain it but I just felt like I wasted a bunch of time when it was over. I expected it to do "more".

You can easily watch Watchmen in a week. It is only one season, and it is on Max. I haven't seem WL yet, so can't answer about watching each season of it independently.

I probably should have had this on my list and forgot. I find it captivating and exceptionally well-made, but most of the characters are awful people and that can be a little draining to watch, especially in the first season where the class theme was really pounded into our heads. We are two episodes in to season 3 and it has the potential to be better than the first two.

As a Survivor fan, I also enjoy the Easter eggs of Mike White casting people from his Survivor season (37, David vs. Goliath) in cameos.

Way too low for White Lotus. I understand not having people to root for isn't everyone's cup of tea, but this is one of the most smartly written shows on TV right now and it shows no signs of jumping any sharks anytime soon.
Yeah, I'm partly to blame. Had I done a thorough, time-consuming analysis of my TV viewing habits over the years, this would have made my top 70.

Season one was wonderful. Could be because I worked at that resort briefly, but overall it was just a storyline that sucked you in. Season two kept you sucked in also. Both seasons had great casts and crazy writing. Season three has been meh after 2 episodes for me. Lots of character build up and not much else. If this current season was the opening season then my interest wouldn't be as high. Let's hope this season catches fire, which I know it definitely can. Imo
All seasons of this show are a slow burn. In the current season, all three main storylines seem like they're about to explode.

My hesitation on that is I was under the impression that it was not renewed and the story wasn't fully completed. Is that not the case? I remember being pleasantly surprised by the movie.

Ditto. I don't have Apple TV, so this and Ted Lasso are huge blind spots for me.

I do! Evidently this was one I thought I cancelled about 6month ago but didn't. :bag: We are a streamers' dream.

Like everyone else, I watched this show a ton as a kid when I was home sick or school was closed for whatever reason. It's extremely engaging because it's easy to play along with, some of the pricing games are iconic, and it's had three all-timer hosts in Bill Cullen (original version that's different from the 1972-present version), Bob Barker and Drew Carey (Barker's toxic behavior aside). These days, we can't keep up with the daytime version, but we record The Price Is Right at Night on our DVR and watch those.

Well, then WTF didn't I watch it???

I think I will beast this out and maybe another limited series that might show up. It looks like White Lotus is more available via my library when I looked.

Severance behind a game show 🤦🏽‍♂️

Well, it's a legendary game show and Severance had only had one season in when the lists were made.
Why is it legendary? Was the writing great? The acting? The cinematography?

I understand why people like it, doesn’t make it great imo
Gater is killing it.

the way this is setup just makes it a "what did you watch as a kid/what do you like to watch now" thing. The community involvement is great. The execution not so much.

Because it was really entertaining and is a lasting icon of Americana?

A show being scripted was not a requirement of this countdown.

Don’t get me wrong, I have Severance ranked higher. But it’s an odd take to me to doubt why The Price is Right would be beloved enough to add to a top 70 list.

It’s a bunch of rich ******** on vacation. Someone dies. Hijinks ensue. Well written and acted. No likeable characters

You can watch independently but there is some minor carryover that really more of an Easter Egg than anything that would keep you from enjoying it
It also incorporates some people of lesser means who work in (or around) each resort. Culture and class clashes are key here, sometimes even among the guests but especially between guests and workers/etc.

the way this is setup just makes it a "what did you watch as a kid/what do you like to watch now" thing.
I didn't make a list, so I get what I deserve in that regard. Sure, I watched cartoons like Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, and Tom & Jerry and game shows like The Price Is Right and Family Feud as a kid like most everyone else of my generation. But for my own consideration, I would never say those were the greatest that TV ever had to offer. It's like listing Pop Rocks in a ranking of the 300 greatest foods. I'm glad people have fond memories of watching those shows, and if they are happy and entertained by them, all the better. Let me know when we get to the hard-hitting shows on the list like Teen Mom and Jersey Shore.

For the record, I didn't rank either. I have seen The Price is Right; it's one of three game shows I considered ranking but it didn't make it. I have not seen Severance so no matter how many good things I've heard about it, it would have been impossible for me to rank. That's the microcosm - don't be surprised that a decades-long show on a network dating back to the three-channel era outperforms a streamer in its second season on a platform most don't have.

I much prefer it this way. We all know what you would find if you looked up a list online of the "greatest" shows of all time. Trust me, you would have seen and heard of even fewer that way. I like to see people champion an odd show and love the conversations and memories of watching some of these shows.

I always treat these more on the lines of a "desert island" list. Yeah, they are my favorites but people seem to put some thought into what holds up over time and they would recommend to other people. When I comment on shows, I will be honest which is which too. I have no illusions that Saved By the Bell is garbage, but it's a show watched several times over at the time and probably wouldn't turn it off if it was on now. A show like Bates Motel is one that I would say is just a straight up great smore like Gator seems to want in the countdown more.

I like White Lotus (had it ranked, but closer to 70 than the top), but I think some better stuff on Max that has not shown up yet.

Like I said, i can see why people ranked it. I just don't agree with it.

There is nothing inherently "great" about it imo

I do have a few game shows on my list, but, I think they elevate the medium. Price is Right doesn't do that for me. It's comfortably familiar, but not 'great'.

I considered Price is Right but I feel like it would have been a pick for it's iconic status and not my entertainment. I did rank 1 game show because it and it's current host are great entertainment to me. That was Family Feud.

I imagine there will be quite a bit of overlap between what is considered the greatest and what some of us like/watch. Yeah, it's neat to see who likes what and who has the same great taste as me but between the many of us that haven't watched said shows for various reasons or forgot about shows I don't really think this is a "greatest" list. Not trying to poo poo scores efforts here but thats just how I feel about it.

What are we even doing here? I’m going outside.

I grew up with antenna TV and 4 or 5 channels. When I was around to watch during the day, The Price is Right was one my go to shows. Some great memories watching with my siblings.

Is Mozart better than Kenny Loggins?

I've never voluntarily listened to Mozart, but every time I hear I'm Alright I want to play golf, when I hear Danger Zone I want to fly a fighter jet and when I hear Footloose I want to dance. I stop and listen and sometimes turn up the volume when I come across those cheesy songs. That connection to something deeper than just the artistic arrangement of notes makes something more valuable and more important to me.

Similarly, TV shows are great because someone decides it is, not because it is technically superior.

All this. "Greatest" could mean greatest impact on the person or greatest impact on culture, not just the best acted and written.

As @Psychopav - I love that this thread has jogged some memories and gotten me to add some things to the mix. I went to HBO with the intent of trying Watchmen or White Lotus last night, but realized I forgot one that would be probably ranked in the top 40 at least, probably higher. I am going to watch that and a limited series I THINK might still be coming up in the countdown that I forgot to watch too. White Lotus and Watchmen had a lot of copies at the library, so no worries there if I don't get to them in the next couple weeks.

I am using the time during the countdown mostly to watch a couple faves so I have better input when they come up, then use the talk about other shows to make a better and more focused watch queue for after.

136 - Severance
Also in the camp of loving this show - so incredibly unique and clever. Probably just thought it was too soon to rank it, being only a season and a half into it and not knowing how it progresses.

135 - The Price is Right
This one wasn't really on my radar but always a fun watch - if only to see the yodeling cliffhanger guy.

And never mind Barker's beauties - Rice-A-Roni and Turtle Wax were pretty alluring themselves.

Yodely Guy's game seems pretty easy to win -- the first item is always around $25, the second is always around $35 and the third is always around $45-50. In TPIR at Night (dunno about the daytime version) they've added an incentive where you get a certain amount of cash if you get really close to pushing Yodely Guy over but don't.

The hardest game is Three Strikes. It's extremely poorly designed and I've seen maybe 1 or 2 people win it in 40+ years of occasionally watching the show. I'd be pissed if I got onstage and that was my game.

It wasn't about beating Yodely Guy though, it was about extending his singing and seeing him fall off the cliff.

There's actually an extended dance mix of the song:

136 Severance
137 The White Lotus
138 Andor

Loved all three of these shows but just couldn’t pull the trigger to include them. For Severance and White Lotus, it is most likely because I haven’t seen the most recent season. When you couple that with me weighing them against shows with many more seasons (Vikings) that I loved, they just didn’t make the cut. I also had a really hard time with the inclusion of shows with only one season like Andor, or limited series. I only have one of each of those and they really needed to stand out to make my list.

I imagine if I were to do this a second time, my list would look very different … especially after the first 20 or so.
