The show was slightly repetitious, and the last season was ridiculous - but House was such a great character and the show had a lot of laugh out loud moments to go with the drama.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this show so high.

It featured two of the best characters of all time (Reverend Jim and Louis De Palma), with great supporting actors and is one of the funniest shows ever made.

💯 Incredible cast, great writing. One of the greatest sitcoms ever.

I have found this list fascinating at times. My wife and I watched the first season of The Leftovers and that was it . . . neither one of us really felt compelled to watch more. We watched Six Feet Under all the way through and enjoyed it, but neither one of us loved it to the point of ever recommending it to anyone else when it came to being asked for suggestions of things to watch. By comparison, we both loved Dexter and have watched it multiple times and enjoyed the sequel and prequel shows. That's not an indictment of either The Leftovers or SFU (both were well made, high quality, and entertaining). It just further illustrates the age-old axiom of different strokes for different folks.
100%. We are on the opposite end here - I had pickles on SFU and The Leftovers. I couldn't get past about a season of Dexter. Mostly it was because I hated the character of Dexter's sister and thought the acting was bad. But hey - good thing there is a wide variety of shows for everybody!

I need to give Dexter another shot. I watched the first 3-4 episodes and it did not grab me. Just kind of seemed like network slop with average writing and acting and I didnt understand the hype. And hearing how it gets worse as it goes did not help.

Taxi

This was so hillarious, but I think it is wrong to call it a comedy as it just had so much heart behind those laughs.

Arguably the greatest scene in sitcom history:

I don't even have to click on this know what it is

Taxi would definitely have been in my Top 20 and maybe my Top 10.

Marilu Henner is something else. I'll say that. Break my four year-old heart and whatnot. Her and Linda Evans and that blonde woman from "We Got It Made," which I noticed hasn't been mentioned here. At all.

The clue is in the post I made.

Yeah, Taxi on my list mainly from it being played on the Paramount Channel over here in the mid 90's, who played a lot of slightly older US comedy that otherwise wasn't repeated anywhere (Laverne and Shirley, Soap etc), that channel was very good in the early days of satellite TV here
I remember it as one of a block of shows that I used to tape if I was out that night. Danny Devito at his best.

Really liked this for the first few seasons. No one played a better flawed prick than Hugh Laurie did. Kind of lost interest though when the second group of doctors joined.
Same here loved the first few seasons and just lost touch.

Six Feet Under should have been top 5 here. Damn.
We didn't have HBO growing up and myself (and alot of others I think) don't have the max app. This list would be different if we all shared the same experience.
It also doesn't get mentioned as much. When you get Max and ask people what you should watch, it's all Sopranos, GOT, Wire, Succession, maybe Curb. I have Max but it's expiring soon, and I'm currently in the middle of a few other shows, but I'll put it on the list for the future.
One of the best ever…..can’t believe this was not top 20 in here.

Stunning actually.

45 Dexter - was a much watch for a few seasons. Agree with others about the sister but still made my list middle of the pack.

46 Taxi - another miss on my part and would make the list on a do over. Great characters, big laughs, stupid humor, Nardo. It had it all.

47 House - watched this regularly but never came to mind. Shows that just got very repetitive got the axe from the ranking.

48 Six Feet Under - some of these shows are right up my alley but I just never got to watch them. I’ll add this one to my list.

49 The Leftovers - like others, I watched it but it never grabbed me despite my affinity for Carrie Coon.

50 The Carol Burnett Show - my #3 show and all time favorite comedy. Still watch episodes regularly on dvd.

51 It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - absurdity at its finest, which we can all use once in awhile.

52 Freaks and Geeks - as I said upthread, awesome show. If it went another season or two with the same talent, it would be top 25.

53 Black Mirror - one of Mrs. Punk’s favorites that I enjoyed from time to time. Not big on the sci-Fi but I’ll have to give some episodes mentioned a try.

54 Friday Night Lights - soap opera. I passed on it.

From best ending ever to worst in such a short span.

Honestly Dexter tanked after like season 4.
that S4 ending though 🔥 🔥
Season 4 is one of the best seasons of any TV show ever

Season 5 was OK and then it goes downhill from there…like train off the tracks bad

See, this is why I cant get into shows like Dexter and Westworld. I have no real interest in starting something I'm pretty sure I will be disappointed with by the ending. No matter how great an individual season is, if it doesnt wrap the story well by the end, I have no interest.

Even though it COULD have used a 5th season, Westworld does come to a conclusion in the 4th.

I'm a big fan. Rewatching right now.

I had House at 77. Surprised I had it so low.
Hugh Laurie is magnificent. I was only used to his goofy comedy sketch shows in the UK so it was a big shock.
Robert Sean Leonard was a good foil, but the writing and cast fell off. Repitition in these long running dramas and new writer ****ing things up is a common trope

I probably overrated this, but the premise and execution over the first four seasons was brilliant.
In hindsight, the writing was awful, the acting not much better and if it werent for Michael C Halls charisma and the fascination with serial killers it would have been an awful watch.
I mean, seriously, how many serial killers can Miami have?
I didnt think the final season, at the time, was that bad but i tend to love the journey more than worry about the ending.

Get to the fourth season of Dexter and watch it. Then start the fifth season with a reason to pull the plug.
That fourth season is striking and why i rated it so high. John Lithgow elevates the show to an unparalleled level.

Ignore some of the comic characterizations and Doakes in particular. Lots of weak characters in this show

The consensus is wrong.

In fact, it's more relevant than ever. The story explores the ideas of "What if AI broke free? Would it be moral? Would it lead to our downfall?" Very poignant.

And really, Season 1 could be self-contained even if you didn't continue. Anthony Hopkins is just amazing.

I had it at #35, but I still feel it is too low. It is amazing how many of the cast went on to great things.

Danny DeVito - Louie DePalma - I think it is safe to put him in the "Hollywood legend" category.
Judd Hirsch - Alex Reager - Has a good career. Everything from Ordinary People to Independence Day.
Christopher Loyd - Reverend Jim - Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Star Trek Klingons. Need I say more?
Tony Stanza - Tony Banta - Who's the Boss was a staple thru the 80's. He also did a movie about a donkey that kicks field goals?
Andy Kaufman - Ladka - Legendary stand up comedian. Infamous "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World". Tony Clifton. Letterman appearance with Jerry Lawler. Mighty Mouse. Too many to list
Marilou Henner - Elaine Nardo - Would go on to sell a mountain of diet/alt health books for the next 20 years.
Jeff Conway - Bobby Wheeler - Always found it funny in an ironic way the guy who played a struggling actor in the show would go on to be the 'least famous' of the bunch. He did the movie Grease, and then did well in the show Babylon 5.

Re seasons 2-4, the themes were great, the execution for the most part was terrible.

I just power watched season 4 of House and what a great ride it is. Starting at ep 2, it's just hilarious for about 10-12 episodes and then the last 2 episodes should have won an Emmy. (might have as I don't follow award shows and don't care enough to look)

I was the high ranker on Dexter and yes, it is downhill after season 4 but it was still better than a lot of other crap on TV. I really didn't mind the final episode and thought it kind of funny.

Arguably the greatest scene in sitcom history:

Never could get into it...that clip doesn't even move the funny needle for me.

ETA - Not a knock at anyone in particular for their personal taste, just a possible reason why this wasnt a top 20 show.

I was too young when this aired. Recall some reruns being on growing up, but If that's the funniest scene in the show, I won't go any further.

Six Feet Under is one of those shows which stays with you long after you finish watching.
Like others have mentioned, the ending is superb. It definitely lifts its ranking significantly.
My only criticism was the writing of the female lead characters, Rachel Griffiths notwithstanding.
Probably harsh, but the show is phenomenal.
I thought the writing of all the lead characters was phenomenal. All were deeply flawed, but we saw the good sides of each as well.

It’s very likely that 40+ years from now that someone who watches one scene from a current popular comedy might not find it that funny. That’s assuming we’re not all underwater or roaming a nuclear wasteland scrounging for provisions.
