The Wire (1 Viewer)

Is there a thread on this that discusses the show starting with Season 1? I went to the first page of this one and it kicks off season 3 (which I don't want to spoil for myself).
I just finished battlestar galactica season 1 on dvd and did the same thing. i couldnt find anything earlier than 06. mustve been purged.

If you watch The Wire and then watch The Corner though, its hard to enjoy The Corner IMO because The Wire justs dwarfs it in every aspect
"the corner" is a smaller story, to be sure, but it has all the hallmarks of "the wire": great characters and quality storytelling. it's not a cop show but rather a character study.
one cool tidbit about the corner, the main character is d'andre. the real d'andre plays brother mazzone's chubby bodyguard in the wire.----------------

Now playing: Mike Patton - Main Title (Reprise)

I had surgery yesterday and stuck in bed so I am watching it over from season 2. Better yet my wife watched one episode with me and decided she really should have watched it from the beginning, so looks like I will watch again.score :bag:

I'm in the middle of season three, and I've noticed something about how the show creeps into my life.

First off, from time to time I find myself mimicking the speech patterns of people on the show. It wouldn't be so bad, but it's usually Avon Barksdale. You feelin me?

Secondly, I'm starting to peep the POH - leece everywhere.

I'm in the middle of season 3, and from the comments I'm reading, it seems like a big setup for season 4 (which a lot of people consider the best season).

Even at ep 7 of season 3, I still laugh every single time that Bubs calls the detective "McNutty"

Threads that start in season three (and before) continue into season 4, but as with all new seasons of the wire, there is a great deal of focus on a new dysfuntional urban instititution in Bal-more.

Watched the first episode of Season 5 last night. Pretty funny to see the City Council President getting so mad about the newspaper story taking her to task for giving a drug dealer a sweetheart real estate deal to switch properties -- in light of the fact that the real-life City Council President her character is based on is now Mayor and was indicted last week, in part for shady deals with developers.

The real-life Mayor is nowhere near as hot as the City Council President character. But my wife tells me the real-life Governor (who used to be Baltimore's Mayor) is much hotter than Carcetti (who is based on him).

:lmao: I drive my wife nuts with it.

Wait until you meet Snoop in Season 4.
My wife has to turn on subtitles with Snoop sometimes.
 Like I do with the British version of The Office.

Great Snoop scene Intro. No spoilers if you click it Statorama

Also, I'm about 4 episode into season 3...I'm fully addicted. Omar and McNulty are two of the best characters ever on TV.

And I'll tell you what...I generally don't dig on the sisters, but Kema makes my pants tight.

You feel me?

fo shoSome really awesome small scenes in season 4. The lunch talk between McNulty and Bodie was some damn fine work by all involved.

One of the most satisfying finales I've seen to any show. Overall, the series was a great purchase. Well worth the $80 bucks.

I finished up Season 4, but there aren't any good torrents for Season 5...looks like I'm gonna have to rent that s##t, dog.

Gotta say I feel like a jackass for not watching this show when it was on.

I didnt watch it "live" until the beginning of season 5 (watched the first 4 seasons from around thanksgiving-season 5 premiere). And then moved after about 5-6 episodes of season 5 and missed the rest until it came out on DVDI honestly dont think I could handle waiting a week for this show each season. Soprano's was bad enough, but my groove of 2-3 episodes of The Wire every night was fantasmic. Maybe I wouldve 'appreciated' it more had it took me 6 years of whatever to see it all develop, but since its hands down what I believe the best show ever made anyway, I dont think so

I find it interesting that anyone who has ever watched The Wire seems to rank it #1 on their list of favorite HBO shows, if not all network shows (see related FFA threads). And I find it difficult to believe that if everyone had watched this show they wouldn't rank it #1.

In the middle of Season 3. For those who have been through it, I just caught that very revealing and surprising quick shot in the bar.

The way that one second of a scene completely changes the makeup and what you now think of a pretty major character is what makes this show amazing. Unbelieveable.

So.....whats the revealing and surprising thing??

I am three episodes into season 5 and that subject has not really come up again. I keep waiting for it but it has not happened yet. You feeling me?

I assume he is referring to the commander of homicide/police in the gay bar having a drink. I am bad at names so I dont recall the name. The "reasonable" guy.

Oh ok...I think that was Rawls if I remember rightSurprised you knew the scene he was talking about

The scene really stuck out. I thought it was going to be a major plot point but it has not turned into anything yet. I am going to start episode 4 season 5 now so there is still time. I am really looking forward to this episode. Omar just found out what Marlo did to the blind guy. Episode three ended with Omars face full of bad intentions. :lmao: :wall:

Rawls is in the new season of Damages and I might be wrong but the black guy in the bar mirror looked like it might be Carver.

I'd find it hard to rank above The Sopranos, but the series finale of The Wire is hands down better. The newspaper stuff in the final season of The Wire left me a little cold, and seemed a little "fillerish" in retrospect.

For me... what it comes down to is The Wire never had a bad season. Heck...I have a hard time remembering a bad episode (in all seriousness). The Sopranos went out with not one, but TWO clunker seasons. They coughed up their chance to claim the title of "best show ever" when the dragged out the Meadow/Finn and Gay Vito storylines. So much useless screen time spent on absolutely nothing. Not to mention they never tied up the loose ends from the Pine Barrens episode. Very disappointing.

Best episode of the show...Im pretty sure Buscemi directed it too

Well I finally finished it, although saying finally when I watched the entire season in less than a month might be pushing it.

After all is said and done, here's how I rank them, best to least best:

4 - Easily my favorite. Not even close.

1

2

3

5

I didn't rank 3 as highly as others, although it was great. Hamsterdam was a weakness for me. 5 was a bit of a disaster. The serial killer plot line was not only weak it was boring. I loved some of the newspaper characters, but there was no plot angle I truly enjoyed.

When I first started watching it, I wanted to see less gangsters and more cops and dock workers. But by the end, I was bored of the cops and wanted more gangsters and school kids. Watching Prez, Randy, Dookie, Michael and Namond was some of the best stuff I have ever seen on TV.

Next up, The Shield (I watched about 18 episodes of season one a long time ago already).

If by weakness you mean 1 of the greatest parts of the entire show and idea in general, then yes, Hamsterdam was a weakness

it was a tough wait each weekbasically just sit there through the excellent closing music thinking holy #### and talking about it with the wife

My wife and I just finished watching Season 5, Episode 9. We have thoroughly enjoyed the entire show and are putting off watching the last episode because we just don't want it to end. It amazes how many characters have come and gone and all of them we seem to remember. Great show...can't believe we only have one more episode.

Question: If this is indeed the best tv show ever? Where do we go from here? We need to watch season #7 of The Shield which we really enjoyed and we also have Deadwood to watch. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

It's an exceptional ending in my opinion. Some think it wraps up things a little too neatly, but I thought it was note perfect. In fact, it's the most satisfying show ender I've ever seen.

WOW. Incredible series finale. The only thing that I didn't like was that it ended. SSHHH**************T

this is my firm belief but it wasn't a disaster by any means. when you set the bar that high, it's a hard standard to meet.

Considering how most series finales end up, its hard to knock this one

As many have stated before.I really wish I could watch it all over again for the first time.

I used to get mad at the lack of Emmy recognition (especially to get snubbed for "Prison Break"), but "The Wire" is too good for an awards show whose real reason of existence is to validate formulaic television, and the programming Execs who green light series. As much as I love to watch "Entourage", it isn't anywhere near "The Wire". I suppose if Tom Hanks was involved in it somehow, they would have to recognize it.

I like Entourage myself, but guy...did you just compare Entourage and The Wire?!

Oh no, I didn't do that. If you've read this entire thread, you would see how much I think about "The Wire". I was hooked on it since it's first season.

Looks like HBO put the Wire back on On Demand (or at least Comcast did) this weekend. They have the 1st 6 episodes of the first season available. just wanted to let all you Wire fans know as well as anyone who hasn't caught it yet, but would like to start from the beginning.
