The Wire (1 Viewer)

After I'm done with The Wire, The Shield is next. I have seasons 1-3 of The Shield already, waiting to be seen.
Prepared to be absolutely floored in Season 1 Episode 1.Seriously. :lmao:
 Can't think of another show that set the tone so quickly.
Now that the shield is done, I'm thinking Dexter is the best show currently on the teevee...thoughts?
i agree, Dexter is the best show on TV

As much as I'm loving the show and Season 4 may be the best single season of any show I've seen, I still think The Shield is a better show overall. I prefer the twists and turns, action and tension of the Shield. \
I'm not asking you to change your mind. But there's no doubt that The Shild is a much more sensationalistic version of police work. The Wire may not be your favorite, but it is a lot more realistic than The Shield.
100% agree.

Rome is awesome and absolutely worth checking out.Carnivale is solid but only lasted for one season so it ends somewhat abruptly.
Carnivale lasted two seasons, but the first is the best.
doh.Now I'm not sure if ever saw the 2nd season.EDIT: After checking my rental history, it looks like I haven't. Can't believe I missed the fact there was a 2nd season.

Despite your Seminole fever, I'm gonna have to throw you a

I'm thinking of giving Dexter or Rome a shot next.edit to add: and as Dave mentioned, Battlestar. I've heard good things.
All excellent shows. Battlestar is ending itself at the right time. The Shield is also tremendous the series finale was very well done.

Season one is sheer brilliance. So I do think Season two is not as good because it gets a bit more melodramatic and whacky. But finding out there's a season of Carnivale you haven't seen is like finding out you have $1 million dollars under your house.

I could use the $1 million. More than a 2nd season of anything.

season 4 is what got me hooked as well!!

Havent seen Dexter yet really though its on my list.

From shows Ive seen, Id have to say Californication is my favorite show going right now

I liked Californication until that cheesy season 1 finale. That scene with the wedding might have been one of the worst finales to any TV show in recent memory. I hear Season 2 is solid but I'm having a tough time investing in another season after that rubbish. BTW, if they stopped focusing on his stupid emo daughter and her band, I may give season 2 a chance.

Just watched Stringer Bell in a major role in the move The Reaping. A few scenes in it that I knew Stringer wouldn't have put up with. I expected some retaliation. :kicksrock:

Good to see him in something else. He's a good actor.

Bought The Wire and finished it up over four weeks. That was two weeks ago, and I still find myself thinking about the show all the time. Just a phenomenal show in every way possible.

Just found out that the actor that plays Stringer is British. Great job!

I found Season 2 to be surprisingly good just because I thought they might run out of ideas, but I might have liked it even more than Season 1. From what I remember, the daughters band isnt in the show at all this season. If you thought how 1 ended was cheesy/cliche, then it should only take you a few episodes to get into this season. They introduce a new major character in this season named Ashby, who Duchovny actually decides to write a book about. Hes basically Duchovny, but a bigtime music producer. Its great.

Well, I knocked out season three in one day, yesterday. While I felt sorta bad wasting away the entire day doing nothing but watch The Wire, good stuff. Frankly, though, I don't think I was as impressed with that season as much as others here and I was more impressed with season two than others here. Also, a quick spoiler:

Killing off Stringer Bell was obviously very impactful, but in some ways I wonder how the show apparently did so well without him in the next two seasons. The entire show seemed to focus around McNulty and Stringer. I guess I'll figure that out when I watch them.

finished season 5 the other night. it was a solid conclusion but i was hoping for more somehow. my wife wants to start the whole show over again with season 1.

The wife and I just watched all 5 seasons in the span of about 2 weeks. I wish we had stopped after season 3. The story seemed to wrap up pretty nicely at that point. Seasons 1-3 were fantastic, but we thought 4 & 5 were medicore at best.

what more could they have done/wrapped up though??I thought the finale was great

Youll probably get crushed for this bc I know a lot of people here think 4 is the best.First off, I think you just crammed in way too much to enjoy the last 2 seasons if you watched all of them in 2 weeks. Also, season 3 does wrap up a few things, but others like Carcetti mayoral run and such are just getting started, and the drug aspect basically switches from Barksdale to Marlo. The major stories are somewhat different, and the unit of cops that started off the show trying to get Barksdale are mostly separated, but I think the writing, acting, story, and show are just as good as the 1st few seasons.

it was good but...maybe i just didn't want the series to end? maybe i didn't want it to end on what felt like such a "meh" season?

My wife and I have made it through the first 4 seasons over the last couple of months. It is pretty incredible.

We live in Baltimore and I work on the west side of downtown -- as good as the show is, seeing how it builds on real life makes it even more incredible.

Carcetti = Gov. Martin O'Malley

Clay Davis = State Senator Larry Young

Not looking quite so forward to season 5. My wife used to write for The Sun and is very close to some of the people that the disgruntled former Sun reporter who created The Wire spends season 5 crapping on.

Here's a blurb from today's Baltimore Sun, which just shows how true to life The Wire is.

Baltimore City Council President Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake has removed Councilwoman Helen L. Holton from her position as head of a committee that oversees tax breaks for developers, a day after Holton was indicted on a bribery charge.

The announcement came in a statement from a Rawlings-Blake spokesman to The Baltimore Sun this afternoon. The powerful Taxation and Finance Committee will be chaired in the interim by William H. Cole IV, who had been vice chairman, until the criminal case is resolved, spokesman Ryan O'Doherty said.

Rawlings-Blake is "deeply troubled by the charges" filed against Holton, according to O'Doherty. "The council president has said that members of the City Council must abide by the highest ethical standards."

Holton was charged with accepting a bribe from prominent developer Ronald H. Lipscomb, the one-time boyfriend of Mayor Sheila Dixon, and then voting in favor of a tax break for a project he was involved in at Harbor East. Holton was also accused of perjury and misuse of office. A Democrat, Holton has represented West Baltimore since 1995. Lipscomb was also indicted yesterday -- he was charged with bribing Holton.

The charges are part of a nearly three-year investigation by the state prosecutor's office into spending practices at City Hall that has long seemed to focus on Dixon.

The indictment issued by a city grand jury accuses Holton of allowing Lipscomb to pay for a $12,500 political survey while she was ushering tax breaks through the finance committee that benefited Lipscomb's projects.

After taking the last few days off (I actually felt kind of burned out on The Wire from watching three seasons in about two weeks), I didn't like anything else on and tossed in the first episode of season four. I really enjoyed it. We'll see how I like the rest of the season, but I'm going to try to take it a little slower here on out. 2-4 episodes per week should get me through it easily enough yet no get me burned out.

glad to see all this wire love

even a year after the season finale

anyone looking for tv series on dvd should check out homicide. its based on david simons book of the same name. simon created the wire and was very involved with the homicide series.

I think season 4 is actually the best season, the kids are amazing. Enjoy.

I loved me some Season 3. The stuff between Stringer and Avon was incredible. I also liked the political stuff -- but, like I said, I live in Baltimore so it was fun watching the fictionalized depiction of the young white ethnic guy (O'Malley instead of Carcetti) who went from City Council to Mayor and is now Governor. I think he even thought he had a shot at VP, but backed Hillary and has now watched someone who has not only youth, good looks, and vitality but also brains shoot past him to the White House.

It was actually a little more than 2 weeks, but we just didn't like the subject matter of season 4 (to a lesser extent 5). We were hooked on the criminal investigation side of the show, but found the mayoral politics and drug amnesty stuff relatively boring. If that stuff interests you, I can see how that'd be more appealing.

The politics side is definitely my least favorite part of the show, but I just think it makes the show that much more realistic and amazing that they still intertwined that with the cops, dealers, kids, etc.Id have to watch the entire series again before I really know which is my favorite, etc., but I probably do like the 1st 3 seasons the most because the politics are left out.And Season 3 is probably my favorite...The Avon vs Stringer angle was great, and I absolutely loved Hamsterdam.

Just got my Series set from Amazon.com when they had it for 89 bucks. Never seen an episode before. Can't wait.

I find the intelligence level of you and your wife mediocre at best.

Just finished up Season 4 and was totally blown away. I don't think I can name a better single season of any show ever. There wasn't a minute of film wasted, every scene was important. Unbelievable television. I loved the political angle and really felt for the kids, it's amazing the different directions they all went. It made me think back to when they were first introduced, trying to catch the bird in the box. I liked following along with this thread too up until the point of the next season's debut.

Amazing stuff. Can't wait to start Season 5. I might wait a couple of weeks to let this season sink in. At this point, I'd rate the seasons: 4,1,2,3

and I added Homicide and the Corner to my Netflix queue. Never watched either.

i liked this much, much more than anything that i saw of "homicide". obviously, the difference between a series and mini-series is such that comparisons aren't entirely fair but still. "the wire" owes an obvious debt to "the corner" moreso than to "homicide".

If you watch The Wire and then watch The Corner though, its hard to enjoy The Corner IMO because The Wire justs dwarfs it in every aspect

"the corner" is a smaller story, to be sure, but it has all the hallmarks of "the wire": great characters and quality storytelling. it's not a cop show but rather a character study.

Today's News from Baltimore:

A Baltimore grand jury indicted Mayor Sheila Dixon this afternoon after a lengthy investigation into corruption at Baltimore City Hall. Dixon is expected to appear at a 4 p.m. news conference at the office of her attorney, Arnold M. Weiner.Dixon is the second city official indicted this week in connection with the investigation, along with a Baltimore contractor with close ties to the mayor.Dixon's ex-boyfriend Ronald Lipscomb, a developer, and Baltimore City Councilwoman Helen Holton were indicted on bribery charges earlier this week.Dixon faces charges of perjury, theft, fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary and misconduct in office in the 12-count indictment, according to a news release from the Office of the State Prosecutor, Robert A. Rohrbaugh."The indictment alleges that Ms. Dixon received in early 2004 various gifts from a real estate developer including travel, lodging and other gifts such as a gift certificate which was used by Ms. Dixon to purchase fur coats," prosecutors said in the news release. The mayor is accused of receiving Best Buy gift cards, some of which were used to buy a gaming system, CDs and DVDs, prosecutors said."According to the indictment, Ms. Dixon told one of the developers that the gift cards were going to be distributed to needy families in Baltimore," according to the news release.
In case anyone cares, the female African-American City Council President who gives Carcetti crap in Season 4 about cutting the school budget is based on Mayor Dixon. Dixon became Mayor when former Mayor Martin O'Malley (the role model for Carcetti) became Governor.Anyone remember the scene in season 4 when the Republican governor keeps Carcetti waiting for hours -- and then as he's leaving the Statehouse, a cop at the front desk tells him that the Governor will see him now? The guy playing the cop was the Republican Governor of Maryland, Bob Ehrlich, who subsequently lost his re-election bid to O'Malley.

Enjoyed Season 1, and I'm currently nearing the end of Season 2. While I still prefer the acting and pace of "The Shield" to this show, getting the full run of "The Wire" for $80 looks like a steal at this point.

Thanks for turning me on to it

After season 3, I still was saying I preferred The Shield. After season 4, I've decided to not compare the two anymore. Apples and oranges. Action vs. drama.

About halfway through season four. My favorite so far. I think I rank them a bit differently than most here. So far, best to worst:

4

1

2

3

I think season two was way underrated and season three a bit overrated.

One of the reservations I had going into this show was having seen Dominic West chew up scenery in "Punisher : War Zone". Didn't think he'd have the chops to pull off a character arc on a weekly show.

He does great work on the show though.

Oh, and don't mess with Omar's boyfriends.

Is there a thread on this that discusses the show starting with Season 1? I went to the first page of this one and it kicks off season 3 (which I don't want to spoil for myself).

finished with season 4 and that's how I rank them.
