I am re watching the series as well. Just finished season 2. I have always ranked 2 as my least favorite season. However, it was much better than i remember it being. i am looking forward to seeing how the other seasons standup up.

Weird, I was just thinking of season 2 and Ziggy this morning on my way to work. Dunno what brought it up, but I was thinking that I really enjoyed the Union season, and the characters from it, although it's not a popular season. Certainly didn't fit in as well as the other seasons, mainly because you saw a lot of the other characters for more than 1 season, but I enjoyed it.

I love season 2. Unlike anything I've ever seen on TV, and that's a big plus.

What did you guys think of Dennis?

Most of his scenes were kind of a bore. I don't really get the point of creating his character, nor do I get why they gave him so much screen time. Are they trying to show us that there is in fact someone who doesn't choose the street life? I would have assumed that on my own.

Just discovered that "Tommy Carcetti" is also a foreigner. Born and raised in Ireland; now lives in London.

Not even a trace of an accent. Jesus, did they hire ANY American actors for this show?
you don't say
The sarcasm I'm getting, but why? Is this common knowledge?
i did think that it was pretty well-known, but maybe i'm wrong. i may be a bit more obsessive than most with this show. I'm sure that you have no way to relate . . .

I liked Cutty. His character showed us how tough it is to stay straight being an ex con in the streets of Baltimore. I was rooting for him and enjoyed seeing him succeed and try to help kids from going down the path he took when he was young.

I think Cutty was there to show that The Game had gotten worse and that it was a young man's Game. I guess also part of it would be that someone might not choose the street life.

his eyes are kind of crazy, like a bird's or something. I think that he was more of a plot device in many cases, though I do think that he offered a nice contrast to all the other folks who were caught in the game and could never get out. Most other characters demonstrate utter hopelessness and resignation to their fates, even if they want to overcome them. Cutty showed that some kind of redemption is possible.

do you really think that it was that tough for him to stay straight? he briefly strayed from his job but realized that he couldn't do it anymore (though it's not totally clear to me why that was). once he started the gym, there was really never any question that he'd stick with the straight and narrow. It really pissed me off when he didn't shoot Fruit. That kid was annoying. GB Lex.

I did like when whatshisname pulled a gun on Dennis but didn't shoot, then Dennis had whatshisname in his sights but didn't shoot. Then they had a knowing glance later during a street interaction. Had it been another kid, I wonder if Dennis could have pulled the trigger.

huh? you think that he didn't shoot Fruit because he was intimidated by their earlier encounter? why do you think that he could have killed someone else?

No. I think it's possible he let Fruit live because Fruit had done the same for him earlier.

He wouldn't have shot anyone, he was done with the game.

I really liked his character

I liked Cutty, but I probably wouldve liked him even more if he stayed with Avon's crew (been awhile, but I think it was Avon and not Marlo)

Starting Season 1 tonight, will watch the entire series over the next few months. I've seen seasons 1, 2, and 3 three times each and season four twice. Five, just once and I forgot what happened to at least two of the characters at the very end so I'm looking forward to getting to the bottom of this again.

Gotta get ready for my move to Baltimore...

I really liked his character
I think Raider thinks Cutty went too soft. It's funny because there were times when I also questioned his "aw shucks" routine. It was definately a little exaggerated but overall I can't imagine not having him as a character on the show. Season 3 and 4 flowed nice and while Cutty's scenes weren't the most important, they were definately a good storyline as an aside to the Marlo and Avon/Stringer stuff.

Season 1, Episode 4: Old CasesOriginal Air Date—23 June 2002Bodie manages to slip through security and escape from lockup. Meanwhile, Herc and Carver continue their renegade ways by traveling to Marlboro to find Bodie and beat him into giving up information on the case. Once they get there, Herc has a change of attitude after meeting Bodie's Grandmother. Furious at being robbed of his product during the "re-up," Avon Barksdale instructs Stinkum, Wee-Bey, and Stringer to double the existing reward for anyone who eliminates Omar and his crew.
I forgot what season this was in but thought it might have been season 1. This is the one where Bunk and McNulty go to the crime scene and use just one word to describe their findings..."####." Absolutely one of the most perfect scenes in TV I've ever seen. It's also the episode that we get to know Omar.

 It's so good even my 69 year old mother quotes it. Granted, she doesn't have to remember too much. But 2-3 times a year she'll do her best Bunk impression.

B. My mom is older than your grandma. My dad is a decade older than your grandma.

What's the deal in the Christo family?

I didn't scroll through this whole thread to see if it had been mentioned, but I just discoverd "The Wire Prequels" on youtube.

An example:

Is there a collection of these on a specific DVD from a specific season?

I'm an idiot.

 Can basically make a montage of every scene from the show and it'd be good. Maybe needs more Bunk and Freamon. After watching the series three times through I'm of the opinion Freamon is the most underrated character. Smartest guy in the room by a huge margin at all times and didn't care if anybody knew it or not.

Carver: We will beat you longer, and harder, than you beat your own ####!!!

Awesome.

I agree....after watching the series, Freamon was the one character I thought was strong enough and well written enough to carry a spin off - if HBO ever thought of doing such a thing.

I hated that crooked cop who used to steal stuff from Bubbles and who broke that little car-thief-hopper's fingers.

Yellow paint.... it's a declaration of war!

He was one of the meanest characters in the show's history. I mean, Avon was evil. But he's a drug dealer. Cops are supposed to be better than that.

Watching season 5 again. Is there anyone who actually liked that storyline involving the newspaper?

:goodposting:

I find myself fast-forwarding through any scenes involving the reporters when they are at work. And MAN... is Dominic West's British accent coming through loud and clear that season. Especially the first few episodes. I have no idea how they didn't catch that as they were filming, or at least in post-production.

I don't know. I like Gus. I'm in the minority who enjoy the paper story-line. As good as the street or the POlice? No. But better than the Carcetti stuff in season five.

Awful.Season 5 was the worst of them all, IMO.

I enjoyed it, but it was a barely-concealed love letter to old-school journalism.

Wow, I had forgotten how incredible that scene was at the end of 5.04 when Marlo/Chris killed Prop Joe.

This show is so well crafted it's silly.
