The Wire (1 Viewer)

Boston.com has the "top 20 cop/fire shows".The wire is no where to be found.Shame.
No love for The Wire during award ceremonies like Golden Globes either. I don't understand why the critics constantly ignore this show. The Wire and Pete Rose have a lot in common. The only difference was Rose getting proper shine during his playing days.
Critics and Emmy voters that don't support The Wire really have no credibility.

Has anyone seen "The Unusuals" on ABC? It's not very good, IMO, but I gave it a shot. Cast includes Adam Goldberg, Harold Perrineau from Oz (and apparently Lost but I don't watch that) and.... DUKIE! (Jermaine Crawford).

Anyway, they used the "copier as lie detector" thing, but it wasn't nearly as well done as the wire. (Not nearly as convincing when it's not inner city children....).

Simon used the "copier as lie detector" thing on an early episode of "Homicide: Life on the Street". Must be a trick that gets passed along from generation to generation of cops.
It happened in real life in Detroit. Simon mentions it in his "Homicide" book.

I heard the story when I was a kid. It apparently goes way back (maybe to the 60s?), because even when I was a kid ~25 years ago, I don't think it was brand new.

FYI: David Simon was on Bill Moyers Journal last week on PBS. Great hour long interview with a big focus on The Wire. Might want to search the PBS website if you missed it.

Making my way through the episodes. I'm in agreeance with my wife that the Omar character played by Michael K. Williams is probably the strongest of the bunch in this season. I did check and it looks like he's on the show for the long haul which is good. Some of the characters lay on the symbolism a little thick, and his is no exception, but he gets some of the best lines of the show plus the delivery is phenomenal.

Come at the King...

Can someone put in order the rankings at the BPD for me.

I can't tell who is at the top and on down.

It would appear it's the same as a military operation, but Broles is a colnel and seems to have a lower rank than the majors. And where does the deputy ops come in?

From here it looks like it's

Chief

Deputy

Major

Colnel

LT

SGT

Officer

Is that right? It's sometime hard to follow the power plays when you can't figure out the structure.

I went to this symposium Tuesday about how screwed up Baltimore's newspaper, The Sun, has become in the wake of massive budget cuts.

My wife used to work there, so I knew a fair number of the people in the audience. But I couldn't quite place the familiar face of the guy sitting right in front of me. For a while, I thought maybe his kid used to be on the same lacrosse team as mine. Then I finally realized it was this guy.

That's what passes for a celebrity sighting in Baltimore. Though my wife once ran into Griggs in the produce section at Whole Foods. I asked if she was feeling the melons.

finished season 2. going to wait some before doing season 3. Seems some think it's the weakest of the 5.
That's really like saying Priest Holmes was the weakest RB out of he, LaDanian Tomlinsom, Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders.I say go for it.

it actually holds up pretty well. it's not their best but it is still very strong. once you're done with the series then you might reconsider.

Wow -- I think Season 3 was probably my favorite. The stuff with Stringer and Avon was just incredible to me.

I would probably rate them:

3

4

1

2/5

I liked both 2 and 5, but they both had flaws in their different ways.

Season 3 is better than Season 2 (though I liked Season 2 more the second time through). Season 3 gets back to the streets more and very interesting stuff with the Barksdale crew.

The department is led by a Police Commissioner assisted by Deputy Commissioners of Operations (often shortened to Deputy Ops) and Administration. The Police Commissioner answers directly to the city mayor and outlines the departmental goals enforced by the Deputy Commissioners. The Deputy Ops wields a great deal of power and is responsible for the day to day activity of the department's district and investigative unit commanders. The Admin Deputy oversees the Internal Investigations Division (IID) and other units. The chain of command from the Commissioner downwards is Deputy Commissioner, Colonel, Major, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Officer. Detectives fall into a rank that coincides with their administrative position. The Criminal Investigations Division commanded usually by a Colonel is the division responsible for the Homicide unit, Narcotics unit, and Major Crimes Unit (MCU) amongst others. The IID, homicide unit, and narcotics unit are each led by a Major while MCU is commanded by a lieutenant. A Major commands each of the nine patrol districts - the Central, Northern, Northeastern, Eastern, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern, Western and Northwestern districts

Season 2 is very different than the other seasons. But I liked it a lot. I can't really think of another cop drama I've ever seen set on the shipping docks like that.

I thought Season 2 was just as good as any other season. It's the season that really got me hooked. Every Sunday night I'd come home from the bar, and instead of watching the SNF game, I found myself watching The Wire instead.

It's my favorite season. Not a popular opinion around here.

My favorite too.2,1, 3 or 4, 5 (my least favorite by a whole bunch)

I liked Season 2 alot.

I'm not sure where I'd rank it, but (unlike other shows) I can't seem to figure out how to rank the seasons with The Wire. It's like being asked to choose which of your children you love the most.

I started The Wire on S2 on HBO. I saw a few episodes of S1 before, but when I saw the premier of S2 on HBO I got hooked. S4 is my favorite though. It's perfect.

Anyone have the full series on DVD and want to get rid of it? Want to give it to my pops for Father's day, and will probably go the eBay route if no one wants to part with it here.

Anyone?

Why would anyone want to do that? Even if they've already watched, they'd want to hold on to the best TV show of all time.

yeah, you're probably right. Thought I'd check first - some folks (like me) rarely watch dramas more than once. But if there's ever a show to keep in the archives, it's probably this one.

all 5 seasons were on sale at Amazon around the holidays for like $90. was such a ridiculous deal I wish I had bought it and tried to sell off my copies of 1 through 4.

:goodposting: Picked up mine from Bestbuy for $89 plus tax. Well worth it, IMO.
