The Wire (1 Viewer)

Got the entire series for Christmas and just made it through season 2. What a phenominal show. Bunk is probably my favorite character so far. That guy just has so many clever 1 liners. Thought season 2 started slowly but finished with a bang. Can't wait to start season 3.
Season 3 is the best season IMO.

I thought 4 was the best. So you have a lot to look forward to :kicksrock:

It's been a year and a half or so since I've watched the Wire, and it's pretty good upon re-viewing. I think after a certain amount of time, it's nearly as good as the first time.

Tough to decide between 1, 3, and 4 for me.

rewatching the show now and just finished season 3.

While Brother Mouzone was trying to find Omar, I forgot about the fact they showed Rawls hanging out in a gay bar. Was that their johnnycakes moment?

Last few episodes of this season might be the best of the entire run. The Avon/Stringer stuff was awesome.

I always wondered why they decided to not pursue that storyline. Wasn't sure if they never wanted to, or just changed their mind.
I think it would've been overdone had they pursued it. It was a sticking point afterwards, especially every time they showed him checking out a woman walking by, or talking profanely about gay sexual acts, or looking at porn magazines in the police office. Seemed to be a subtle joke that there are secretly gay men in the PD and even those who seem most ardently tough and interested in chicks could be putting on a show.

Because the storyline itself is stupid, as we saw in the Sopranos. They just wanted to show us that Rawls had issues with himself and took it out on everybody.

The fact that they didn't pursue that storyline directly is what makes The Wire The Wire, and every other show not The Wire. The Sopranos would have made this a season long event. The Wire it's just a little detail that helps detail the character.

Can someone clear up something in S5 for me: I'm only halfway thru S5 so can you be careful how it's addressed. tia

So omar comes back to avenge his buddies, but isn't going after marlow specifically. Instead he's targeting a guy who lives in a condo tower that I don't really recall being a central character. Who is the guy, and why is he protected so heavy and why is he the main target?

Season 5 is solid, but the dude's high horse on the newspaper industry is already really wearing me out. Very whiny so far.

The guy is Monk and although not nearly on the screen as much as Snoop or Chris, he is one of Marlo's main crew members. Also, I don't think he was so well protected as it was an ambush. Marlo was in hiding at that point, so Omar was trying to take down every member of Marlo's crew and force him out of hiding.

My current Netflix checkout is Season 2 of Damages. The actors who played Rawls and Freeman on The Wire are in it. When my wife and I were recapping the Damages story to each other to make sure we had all the details, we kept referring to those two guys as "Rawls" and "Freeman" because we couldn't remember their character names on Damages. Just shows what an impression The Wire made on us when we watched it.
We always refer to Broyles in Fringe as Lt. Daniels.

I think the series would have been better served swapping the main components of 2 and 3 and allowing Stanfield to come along in the dock season. That's my only complaint about the ordering of the seasons. The dock season just seems so out of place now.

I wanted to start a thread to keep track of all appearances from cast members of The Wire, but never got around to doing it. They pop up everywhere.

Kima Greggs was on The Good Wife last week.

Bubbles and Cutty were in Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Bunny Colvin was on Lie To Me and How I Met Your Mother recently.
Time to fire up a "Six Degrees of The Wire" thread.

Thinking about re-watching, using the following drinking game. :goodposting:

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

Rules of the game:

-A character repeats some advice he or she has been given to another character

-Poot or Wallace say something stupid or naive

Half way through the 3rd season.

It has gotten better and better. But I have not found it to be the best show ever.
well, the next 1.5 seasons are probably better than anything you've seen yet.
Well, considering after season one I thought I was watching some bad acting of a TV redux of New Jack City. Not that it wasnt entertaining, just wasnt worth any accolades I had heard thrown around about it.
Season 4 did it for me.

Chris Partlow was in The Taking Of Pelham 123. I was expecting him to just start killing people at any moment but he didn't.

There were no vacants nearby.

Oy.

Just started watching the whole series last week. Borrowed them from my BIL. I'm 4 episodes into Season 2, as of yesterday.I look forward to coming back in a couple weeks and catching up on these 32 pages.
Just finished the series. Wow. Everything the Sopranos was, but better. Always thought that was BS coming from people who just wanted to be counter-culture snobs. But it lived up to the hype. Favorite characters: Prez, Prop Joe, Bunk and Omar. That Wallace scene still haunts me, weeks later. That was the first time I watched a complete series, fresh on DVD. Usually I either catch on to a show early and watch it during it's run (Lost), or don't watch it at all. Since those 5 seasons spanned 8 or so years, it was kind of jarring seeing the actors age and/or grow up in the span of days. But one thing that made it good as far as a viewing experience is that everything was so fresh in my memory that I think I caught just about every tie-in and reference to things from past seasons. There were a lot of quotes that one character said and then was said by a different character years later. How good is the commentary on the DVDs? I re-watched the few Season 1 episodes that had commentary while waiting on Season 2 to come from my BIL, but didn't do it for the rest of the seasons because I was afraid of spoilers after catching a few on Season 1 (like D'Angelo's death.) I also had to avoid running to IMDB every time I recognized an actor because I was afraid to see they only appeared in X episode of the wire and would know their time was short.

I do this with every single character from The Wire whose name I remember, for every single show or movie they are in

Now I'm done catching up with this thread. Great to see a lot of my thoughts echoed, especially with the season 5 serial killer thing. Once it was clear where McNaulty was going with it, then started doing some of the things he did, I was physically ill and cringing many times while watching. But, maybe, that's what makes this a great show.

Other thoughts:

- I'm also guilty of have Wire dreams

- The first episode of Season 2 really threw me for a loop and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did

- Loved how I disliked many characters at first then wound up having them be favorites (Slim Charles, Chris, even Marlo)

- One thing that got  quickly was Dominec West's portrayal of a drunk. By far the worst acting on the show

- There were many times, usually near the end of an episode, where I would notice my heart racing due to the suspense being built up

- I thought for sure Kima was going to die in Season 1 and when she didn't I let my guard down for the next few "big" deaths

- Brother Muzone seems like the equivalent of Furio, as far as fan reaction and also people holding out hope he would play a role near the end of the series.

- Loved how all of the music on the show (save for the season finale montages) was organic in the scene. Always from a car radio, headphones, juke box, etc. and how the lyrics and/or song type always had some meaning to the scene

- Going even further, the show was always able to be high-brow and symbolic without being pompous (*cough* Sopranos.) Even the series finale, with all of the parallels and "new replacements" wasn't too sugary

- It was also a show that often gave the viewer credit for being smart, never having to spell things out or dumb them down for exposition. Like at the beginning of each season it would pick up a year later and not have to spend the first 5 minutes explaining all that happened during that time. Viewers were asked to pick it up and piece it together themselves as the first episode played out

- I seem to be in the minority that I wasn't a big fan of Cutty and/or his arc. Just didn't pique my interests

HBO putting Season 1 up on Demand has sucked me back in for a 3rd go-round. It's amazing how much the show turned over the characters and plotlines over the course of teh series. I barely even remembered D'Angelo and Wallace.

Turned on the TV this morning and happened to see Partlow in a cameo on Numb3rs. Never even saw the show before.

Have to agree and also him being a male whore to all the high level professional women in the series. It would have been more believable with him just picking up the numerous skanks in the bar that he frequented with Bunk.

I will say he did provide me with one of the funniest moments in The Wire. I believe it was Season 5 when he was mounting some girl on the hood of his car and he flashed his badge at the patrolling officer. Classic McNulty.
