The Wire (3 Viewers)

Watching for the first time, finished season 4 last night. It's funny to see the actor diaspora from the other direction. People who saw The Wire 10 years ago see older versions of the Wire characters when these actors show up, but I'm watching The Wire and saying, "Oh, cool, it's young Pornstache. And look at what good shape Tyrese was back then... I wonder if he and young Reverend will have a scene together like in Walking Dead."

I am rewatching the series now and I totally forgot that a very young Micheal B Jordan played Wallace.

Watching season 1 again. I still say Kima was a waste of space.
Racist.
No
Sexualorientationist
Totally off topic but your post reminded me that at a X-Mas (holiday...whatever) party last night we were talking about the bizarre proliferation of beards since Duck Dynasty first aired and a friend of mine called them "Lumbersexuals". Dunno but I thought it was hilarious.

And IMO Kima was only okay but certainly not a waste of space, she got better as the series progressed.

Lumbersexuals is a pretty common term.

I side with Tanner on the Kima question.

You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day

Never heard it before but I guess you run in different circles.

Kima was there, not great, not terrible no point to call her out specifically as being lesser than some characters. For me the whole Brother Mouzone story line stands out as being entirely forced. Far more than Kima. Sure he was a bad ### but let's be honest he was completely shoe horned into the series.

I'm not sure Duck Dynasty is/was really to blame for the resurgence of beards.
:lmao: Yeah, it's been a thing in Seattle/Portland for a long while (along with the term "lumbersexual," which dates to 2008 in Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia), pretty sure nothing to do with Duck Dynasty there.

I am rewatching for the 3rd time right now (middle of season 5 currently) and it is just as good the 3rd time around. I can almost understand everything snoop says this time around :)

I just finished watching the brilliant scene when McNulty visits the paper and he and Scot both are lying about the serial killers calls.

Recently started. Through 3 episodes. I like it, but not blown away yet.
If you like it after only 3 episodes, you are good to go. By the end of season 1 you should be hooked. Most who don't like the show gave up early because it is a slow start.
Yup, definitely a slow burn but boy it just keeps pulling you in.
I actually stopped and started the show a few times and then BOOM you're hooked. I've watched it 5x now and actually the first episode is kind of cringey at points because of things HBO made Simon do that make it seem like it's for a dumber audience. It stops those quick cuts and flashback type things immediately though and the show is much better for it. In fact the rewatch is almost as important because you really catch things on a whole other level.

Loved it. So many interesting characters. I think I posted in another thread that I put off the last couple episodes because I didn't want it to end.

Need to figure out the next show to start. Boardwalk Empire or Sopranos? Or another HBO show?
Shows I put up there with the wire:

sopranos

breaking bad

fargo!  **** Seriously watch this!

oz is also worth a watch.  Lots of wire actors too.

I recently started watching The Wire. I've got one season left. I thought seasons 2 and 4 have been great and 1 and 3 were good. Overall, I think it's a top flight show, but it hasn't quite lived up to the hype for me.

I've seen Breaking Bad and actually started watching it again from the beginning recently.

I've watched the first couple episodes of The Sopranos. I started it around the same time as The Wire and The Wire won out for me so I put The Sopranos off.

I have Netflix and Amazon Prime and I don't believe Fargo is on there. I've heard it's good, though, and would love to watch it. I looked on the FX app once and it didn't have season 1.

Was Oz an HBO thing? Is that on Amazon?

Oz is an older HBO show.  Prison based, very soap opery in its nature, and uber violent if you like that stuff.

Deadwood was another excellent HBO show.

Oz is complete crap compared to BB and the Wire.

OZ was one of HBOs first shows.  Its pretty solid.  You will see alot of actors in other shows on it.  Fargo is on FX i dont think its on any streaming apps.  However, Fargo is the only show i put up there in the same breath as The Wire and BB.  Season 1 is amazing.

Pretty sure the FX app had season 2 of Fargo, but I didn't want to start watching that without season 1. Netflix has some FX shows, so hopefully they get it at some point.

Started Deadwood a few weeks back. Done with Season 1 and onto Season 2. I'm llking it but not loving it. But it's pretty darn entertaining.

Wait until you watch it the second time.

And you will watch it a second time.

I'll watch it again. There are some things I didn't love about it. They're not major but still rubbed the wrong way. For example, the first season was a pretty serious drama. By the end, it was more of a farcical look at a bumbling police department, newspaper, and political office.

I also didn't love how they handling the drug factions. I liked D and Omar the best. Once they cycled through the drug traders, it was harder for me to get into the new characters. Didn't love the final resolution with Marlo, but they needed a way to address the homeless predator story.

I also was a little annoyed by some seasons having big story arcs involving characters and then they all but disappeared or only had bit parts moving forward. It is what it is.

I also think if they were going to have stuff involving reporters, it probably would have made more sense to have them from the beginning and not just thrown in on the last season.

These are mostly nitpicking details. Overall Inthought the show was excellent overall. Will have to watch again so more stuff will sink in. They had a lot of characters. I suspect once you know everyone from the beginning, things will fit together better.

Yeah, I enjoyed The Wire even more the second time around….and cosign on Fargo.  One of the best shows going.

Tier two: sopranos, mad men, game of thrones, bates motel (criminally underrated) and firefly.

Tier three (entertaining but glaring errors): Dexter, house of cards, walking dead, boardwalk empire, and oz.

You definitely need to rewatch.  There are some larger points that were made with the show that i suspect you missed.  Like for example, the reason the reporters are shown in only the final season is each season they give you a look at how each system affects and interacts with the people in the city of Bmore(the streets, the docks, police/political, schools, media).  Also, the new characters were meant to show the cyclical nature of things.  Many of those new characters were presented to show you how the Omars and the Ds came to be.  Second watch will help.  it is alot to absorb first time around.

Just finished the series.  5 seasons over about 3 weeks.  Loved it.
It’s my favorite series by a substantial margin, I think I’ve done 5 complete viewings at this point.  You’ll actually get a lot more out of subsequent viewings. Little things like knowing that Randy Wagstaff is a ******* son of Cheese (method man), or watching Namon scenes already knowing from the start that Wee Bay is his dad.

Really phenomenal all the way around... except for the serial killer story in season 5.
