Things that are inexplicably expensive (1 Viewer)

Car repairs. You can save a ridiculous amount if you know how to do it yourself or if you have a buddy who can help you out. My coworker has helped me with my last few repairs. I pay him (in beer and cash) but I know I've saved hundreds from my regular shop.

higher abv.  you don't need as much.   Now $15 for a 4 pack or some of the bombers that cost $20+.....yes.
bah.  it takes a small amount more grain to make higher ABV, and I'd assume grain costs are a fraction of the overall cost to manufacture (energy, handling, distribution, etc are the same between high gravity and low gravity).

They charge more because people are willing to pay it.

Male enhancement pills and prescription drugs generally

Spices

Replacement auto parts from original manufacturer

Apple accessories (chargers, cords, power cables etc.)

Link to a 11 rack mattress.
I should have taken a picture of me laying on it.

Was a California king adjustable sleep number with the zero gravity and added foam and all the most current technology. Per my brother in law they had even more expensive options (more foam).

This is a great one.  My son is Type 1 Diabetic so when it comes to holidays and his other siblings are getting swamped with candies and treats, we try to load him up with Jerky as an alternative treat.  I think they must put cocaine in there or something.  Very expensive.
I read somewhere that it takes about three pounds of beef to make one pound of jerky due to the dehydration.  That explains at least some of the cost.  That said, it's still way too expensive.

Not to beat a dead horse, but if you can provide a one-sentence explanation for why something is expensive, then by definition it is not inexplicably expensive.

You are right that craft beers are more expensive than Bud Light in part because people are willing to pay more for good beer than for #### beer.  There are cost-driven reasons for this too, but obviously demand plays a major role.

might as well reply this to pretty much everything in this thread.

You can thank our government for providing overly-generous patent laws and making it needlessly hard to bring generics to market.

The good news is that Viagra is apparently going generic around this time late next year, and I read someplace that Cialis (which for bizarre legal reasons is going to have its patent expire before Viagra, despite being later to market) may go OTC around the same time.

Good. Soon even poor people can have 4 hour erections, even if they can't afford to call a doctor if it lasts longer than that.

Try Leesa mattresses.  Not inexpensive, but reasonably priced and pretty good reviews.  Got one for our daughter and it's very comfy...don't need box springs with it either.

Also:
The commission a real estate agent takes by default.
Tried it . I liked it , wife hated it . Slept on it 2 months and returned it with no problems.

$3500 or so later and she's happy now

Every home improvement job.  Also, strange coincidence that, regardless of the job, it always costs nearly exactly $5k.

Printer ink, razor blades for sure.     North Face jackets, Beats and Bose, Ray Ban products, Viagra, Comcast Cable, tickets to a show or play.  My wife wanted to go see Phantom of the Opera at the Detroit Opera House..the tickets were 200.00 each.

27" 2K G-Sync Monitors.  These things are 2 - 2.5 times the cost of a graphics card.  I simply cannot pull the trigger on a $700+ monitor.  For ####s sake, I can get a 50" or larger 4K TV for less.  #### Nvidia.

caviar-  tastes like greasy salt similar to potted meat.

truffles-  so what you trained a pig to root this horrible tasting tuber out of a forest in France.   I trained my hamster to run on a wheel, take that Francois

fancy olive oil-    same #### as the cheap stuff you buy in boxes at a warehouse but they put it in a nice bottle and say its "imported" so they can charge you $14 a bottle.

Weddings;   no, snowflake, you aren't worth $50k unless i'm getting hummers daily for life, then I might think about it.

Good internet access
It still seems kind of cheap to me. It's something most people would say they have to have, and there is limited or zero competition in most markets. Add in the fact the more and more people are refusing to subsidize everyone else's internet service by throwing money away on cable bills, and I'm surprised it's not more.

I'd guess internet prices will roughly double over the next few years.

Vodka and unaged spirits. You can go get a bottle of 100 proof Evan Williams White Label that's been sitting in a white oak barrel for 4-6 years for about $13. Yet people will go spend 2-3X that much for some 80 proof garbage that's right off the damn still.
