THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

Last call for the charity music draft.  We've got 3 spots remaining.
hate to be that guy, but may i do this on autoskip? just post mine when convenient and after being up each time? I chose three for this theme weeks ago when you first explained the idea. not that i expect to win, but there's a battered women's shelter here that would put your five hunny to great use if "enuff y'all see the brilliance in my 4 picks".

i'm doin't planes, trains and automobiles this coming week.

Hmmm. Seems 25 rounds is a thing. As the once and future unstrustworthy interim commish of the mess, I'm changing the rules.

25 rounds everybody. Shuke jumpstarted this one hit wondering us. No clock, no order, no pickaday. All picks due asap or not.
OMG, OMG,OMG!!!!1!! This sounds like CHAOS.......

I love it.

This pick sort of ticks two boxes.

The song was written by Leonard Cohen (hey krista) and the artist performing it was mentioned by Pip and Chaos Commish earlier in the thread.

k.d. lang - Hallelujah

https://youtu.be/pJlFAcSaoSY

There are many covers of this song, but this is my favorite.

I think you've got me confused, northern exposure. I don't think I ever mentioned k.d. lang. That wouldn't have entered my brain, I think. Wow if I did. I need to get my memory checked. Pip and I conversed about Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Thin Lizzy. That's the interlude I remember.

Absolutely.  You'll know your draft spot ahead of time and if you're not available at that time, draft any time you can later each day.

I listened to a lot of k.d. for my themed draft. I focused on the songs she co-wrote rather than the covers. I went back and forth on the best but I finally settled on "Trail of Broken Hearts" but never pulled the trigger.

Sorry rock, my mistake. Chaos Commish mentioned k.d. in one of his posts and referenced Pip. I had the wrong person.

Need to listen to more by The Districts and Hot Snakes. I've heard of both but never gave a listen. Both are off of labels that I really like and that put out consistently good music, so that's going for them. The Districts have a real Walkmen vibe to them, Hot Snakes have that garage revival sound to them.

Savage Garden reminds me of a very modern nineties Sweet and I'm not surprised that Mrs. R. likes them. I remember that song. I can almost hear the strains of Deee-Lite in that song for some reason.
That last Hot Snakes album is the best punk rock record I've heard in years. They are the former members of Drive Like Jehu out of San Diego.

Wow. I remember Drive Like Jehu. I don't think I ever totally got into them, but I remember living in San Diego the summer of '93 and I think they were big around SD even back then. I know they had an album with a picture of a lawnmower on it or something like that.

Round 23.xx

De La Soul ft. Redman - Oooh

I have no business selecting a best De La song, partially because I don't know the catalog front to back, nor do I even have an infallible opinion about my own thoughts about their songs. One day it's "Magic Number," one day it's "Rock.Co Kane Flow," one day it's that roller skating jam from Saturday.

But this is the one I loved so much as a twenty-six year old that I went out and bought the CD back when weekly pay wouldn't really permit (I worked non-profit in a big city. It was not conducive to spendy living.)

This is the club track I loved.
Love that one.

I've had the exact same thoughts. If he were to say- you know what, I'm on the spectrum and this kind of thing is my usual trigger... it would be easier to be supportive and part of the discussion and not get sucked into the fun-ruination. ownership, like djackson does, would help a ton. but without that, its easier for me to just ignore him.
This is where I got to.   The problem for me is the total lack of insight and the indifference to getting any.

Moving into Asia now...

23- Say Sue Me- Old Town

This tune popped up via Spotify a couple years back and pulled me into the band...not a big catalog, but nice indie pop out of Korea. I felt like this tune had the biggest legs though.

Into China now...

23- GongGongGonglll- down quantity road

Another Spotify find pulled me into this Chinese/Canadian duo based out of beijing iirc. Loved their minimalism and lofi guitar and bass sound...especially the break somewhere 2 minutes in on this song. Their recent stuff seems to be more krautrocky for the cloob. Doesn't come off as well imo. They have a cowboy song that rivals this one from around the same time.

16.xx  Brand New Love - Sebadoh

Pretty sure I've drafted this song before but I don't care---it's that fantastic.

I definitely lean to the Barlow songs on Sebadoh albums (not that the other 2 writers aren't great in their own way) and this is his best.

The band changed my music listening trajectory in a very good way.  I was beginning to settle into a bit of a post-college rut 2-3 years after graduating when my brother-in-law suggested I give these guys a listen.  That sent me into a whole new realm of music discovery.  I always thank him for that.

22- Sebadoh- you know which song it is if you know sebadoh.

A friend put this on a mix tape for me in grad school. Just dropped me in my tracks when it came on the first time...still gets that reaction from me.
Great minds.......and such

24- Yellow Magic Orchestra- キュー

I came to these guys via Japan and David Sylvians work with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Not a huge fan of most of their earlier 70s albums which felt a little tinny and cheap...but this one from around 1980 got everything right. Not sure if they heard Bill Nelson and got influenced or vice versa, but there's a kind of chill out new wave vibe that I loved from this...and the song above, "Cue" feels like the very best part of Nelson's Flaming Desire.

25a- Eddy Current Suppression Ring- Wrapped Up

I don't remember where I heard them...wfmu?...but iirc they were a bunch of guys working at a n Aussie vinyl record pressing plant who formed a band...almost too good to make up a Genesis story for a band. First album is pitch perfect too to bottom...this tune stands out. Released an album recently after a crazy long hiatus...sadly, not good.

25b- Sofa Head- every time

I bought some English cd comp around 1991-2...NME or something else...and this tune was on it. I could never find anything else by the band, but to this day I still love the tune...and can't imagine they did anything better- or they'd have become international celebrities

When you come to the iFighting (what would a Saturday night have been in this draft without it), skip those parts.

R&B from 1990 on was criminally undervalued in this draft. The draft ended up being a middle aged white guy draft.**  There is nothing wrong with that, I made some middle aged white guy picks myself but with this pick and several others I found myself drafting against that tendency to purposefully diversify the songs.
I've got a ton of R&B; it was my main genre for a long time and I used to work at a very popular urban radio station. I went mostly other directions in this draft, but I've still got a lot on deck.

Story time before my last pick - this artist opened up for Kelly Clarkson at the local fair, whose tour bus broke down on the way to the show.  So, he had to do an extra long set to stall, and he was actually quite good.  Both my wife and her friend ended up buying his album, and my wife and I saw him on his own when he did a small show nearby not far away.  This contemplative song about a failed relationship is my favorite of his.

Round 20 - Eric Hutchinson - Sun Goes Down
my favorite is "Watching You Watch Him", and I break it out once in a while. it's very fun to sing along with.
