THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (4 Viewers)

10.20 - Metric - "Stadium Love"

Bit of a sneaky copout pick here, as this is a quintessentially Canadian band, but Emily Haines was born in India so it'll meet my criteria since I've already crossed Canada off the list.  Raised in Ontario, but her mother ran a school for underprivileged children in India.  Coming up with 20 different countries for songs you actually like is a tough game.

Plenty of other Metric options, and other options with xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx, but this is a fun one.  Any given day, I might say "Twilight Galaxy", "Dead Disco", "Combat Baby", "Synthetica", "Help I'm Alive", "Gold Guns Girls", but I'm feeling this one today.
dammit! this is one of my favorite bands and I thought I could wait a little longer to pull the trigger. I love so many of their songs, but Gold Guns Girls is probably at the top of my list.

I mentioned before my obsession with songs that sounds like the 80s. when I'm in that mood, No Lights on the Horizon is my go to. it sounds like it could have been pulled directly out of Sixteen Candles or something. the synth that comes in at 4 minutes gives me chills.

I know we'll never do a jazz draft, but this write up's been in the back of my head for years. So why not tl/dr y'all on a lazy Saturday? I don't have a short list. Just a long list without priorties at this point.

In a discussion of greatest sax ever - after you know who - then who else but King Curtis? Active from 61 to 71, when he so fricken tragically lost everything in a damn knife fight, his credits are just ridiculous. Aretha's band leader (The Kingpins) from 67 to the fatal fight. His performances on her epic two live albums from the Filmore West are legendary. In the unabridged version the Kingpins rage on for an hour without her. It's my favorite part of the recordings. I've drafted from it. And tbh, Aretha is another small doses genius for me. She can grate on me after awhile. But not the King-led Kingpins. They were instrumental R&B smoke.

As a sideman and/or studio cat, King played with Andy Williams, Nat Adderly, Waylon Jennings and Buddy Holly (versatile dude). Lennon tapped him for a couple tracks on Imagine. That's him on Yakety Yak with The Coasters. He recorded with Hendrix but the tracks were lost in a fire at Atlantic Records. Sigh. Fats Domino, Sam Cooke, the great Donny Hathaway and on and on.

Despite being in such heavy demand, he released an impressive catalog of solo work. Maybe his most recognizable piece is Hot Potatoes because it was the original theme to Soul Train so many of us fops heard once a week for years.

For me his best song goes back to 64 before he abandoned jazz admittedly for the money available elsewhere. It's a perfect instrumental halftime tune for my playlist. He seemlessly transtioned from soprano to alto to tenor, and played a saxalo (alto hybrid-tuned thingy) for this track. The Kingpins rearranged it for his funeral. It's slow and kind of sultry, which is sort of my idea.

10.27 King Curtis - Soul Serenade

Was surprised these guys weren’t taken yet, especially when the were spotlighted the other day. Yo Mama selects:

10.32 - Roxy Music - Ladytron

Not one of their biggest hits, but by far my favorite song of theirs. So cool/funky/trippy.

My initial exposure to Roxy Music was the mellower bigger hits like Avalon and More Than This, so I was blown away when I first listened to their older stuff. So great and so different.

I was going to say that decorating comes after Thanksgiving but I honestly forgot you probably don't celebrate the holiday.
Canadians do celebrate Thanksgiving.  They just celebrate it on Columbus Day (or Indigenous Peoples Day, take your pick).
Yep and our Thanksgiving isn't as big a thing as American Thanksgiving (though it is a national holiday, we just don't take three days before and after like you seem to). Christmas is our biggest holiday - maybe it is there too, it just seems like Thanksgiving is as an observer.

There's a general thought up here that no Christmas decorations should come on until after Rememberance Day (November 11), so maybe that's the Canadian equivalent of "after thanksgiving".

Roxy was near the top of my list for Round 11, however I would have taken the original version of Angel Eyes (not the lame disco remake that was a hit).

Excellent!  I'm shocked they were on the board, too.

Lame disco period Roxy was still superior pantie dropping music for New Waver girls in the early 80s.

Precious few artists break ground forever.

I think lots of people treat these things as a diversion from work and mainly do their FBG’ing during work hours. We keep a more leisurely pace over the weekends so these things don’t get in the way of life too much.

Now it’s always appreciated when people know they’ll be away for the weekends to go on skip so we don’t get completely stuck.
This is why he usually do pick a day weekends, which was immediately shot down when I suggested it.

It's the best way to do weekends though and I basically chose not to do it this time just to reinforce that point.

Because I'm a stubborn #######.

Why didn't you do it last weekend?

Momentum was strong and it carried through the weekend.

It wasn't Friday but you and @squistion really wanted to just keep it going as is, so I did

I never said to keep it going as is, but cool.  If you want to whine about it, also cool.

I'm happy to stop trying to keep it going, entering picks, @ing people, keeping track of skips, etc.  You know, leave it to the guy in charge!

And honestly, @squistion has questioned every single decision I've made, from dating to go to a one hour clock on week days, to skipping people, to pick a day weekends and it's the first of these drafts he's ever done with us... and he's been wrong on every account. But I don't want to fight the battles, so I don't

I agree with this.  But feel free to lump me in with him.  Good for you.  #### this ####.

Yes, I would say the same thing again. There should be a clock on the weekend since picks are not forfeited but can be skipped and made up at a later date.

Don't punish everyone in the draft because a couple of people are irresponsible and can't get their act together or leave their choices with someone else or pick at a later time.

We did just fine last weekend with no clock.
I know. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

This doesn't help your argument.  Again, I never said I "really wanted to keep it going as is."  I merely pointed out what had happened before, as a point of discussion.  Feel free to run "your draft" (which you do nothing to help with) however you'd like.

I'm thinking maybe we do one pick per drafter per day (any time, no clock) for the weekend but return to the clock on Monday morning.

It is fine, leave it as it is - draft moves along pretty well on the weekend (slows down late in the evening but I don't see that as a problem). I was hoping to get in some picks this weekend if the draft was done like last weekend, because I have jury duty next week and may not be able to make any picks during the day.

We did just fine last weekend with no clock.
This was the sequence of posts that made me not do pick per day, are you saying I misinterpreted? @krista4

See above.  Please feel free to run the draft yourself with no input from anyone, instead of showing up very occasionally and then doing nothing but complaining and being a #### to the people who are helping you out.
