THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (1 Viewer)

Wasn't really much of a story.  Went with my now-wife and my friend Alex.  Wife generally doesn't like my taste in music, but is a big fan of Chuck Klosterman, so I managed to drag her along under the guise that it was more of a Chuck Klosterman documentary than a glorified concert.  She hated it.  I thought it was a good movie though.  It's the last time I've been to a movie theater.

10.x - Anthony Hamilton - Do You Feel Me

one of the great contemporary soul voices, Anthony sounds like a throwback, while also being current. he's one of those guys that could sing the phonebook and it would sound great, but I chose this song because it really leans into the soul. very Otis Redding-like.
Oh hell yeah, love this pick.  I've picked "Comin from Where I'm From" a couple times in the past.

I would like to take the Small Faces ...the Faces have been taken.

The two groups are consistently shown as separate bands - their names are different and the music was certainly different.

First their was "Small Faces" - led by Steve Marriott - backed by Ronnie Lane , Kenny Jones, and Ian McLagan (replaced Jimmy Winston).

Marriott left to create "Humble Pie" ...the rest of the guys recruited Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood and they became the "Faces".  A much more Rod-driven band ...and in a couple of years became as much a Rod Stewart backing band as they were the "Faces". Ronnie Lane left toward the end as his role was so diminished.

They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame together but separate groups.

They’re separate bands imo.

That should be OK. I briefly considered the Small Faces too, but I have a bunch of other bands I like better that haven't been chosen

You're good, IMO

Agreed that they are different bands. Different name, different sound, different creative forces.

I saw The Wall and Tommy in theaters.

I didn't see Across the Universe in a theater but the topic made me wonder about your opinions of it. I watched it after a Thanksgiving meal late at night after everything had been cleaned up. My older bro and sis watched with me. We loved it. Then I read really bad reviews from trusted sites.

I wish the Parsons/Hillman version of The Byrds were called The Big Byrds so they’d be draft eligible because they fit the other criteria.
You can make the cases for at least three versions of the Byrds being completely different bands -- the original lineup, the Parsons lineup and the 1968-72 lineup that was incredible onstage. Same with Fleetwood Mac -- the Peter Green, Bob Welch and Buckingham-Nicks eras bear little resemblance to each other, and there may be other distinct incarnations as well.

In the liner notes of the Byrds box set, Roger McGuinn said he'd wished he'd changed the band's name after Parsons and Hillman left, because the band he put together with Clarence White bore little resemblance to the previous incarnations (other than making Eight Miles High an integral part of their live set) and really deserved to have their own identity.

THE SMALL FACES - TIN SOLDIER

so glad everyone that has weighed in agrees that the Small Faces were indeed a different, very different band than the Faces.

I have taken this song in several other drafts, but if I am doing the theme that I'm doing ...and not including this song - would be a personal travesty.

I love Steve Marriott and I love this song - the video is awesome.  This is a top 10 of all time song for me.

"I am a little tin soldier that wants to jump into your fire".

i always hope Happiness Stan - my favorite rock & roll fable - gets mention whenever Small Faces are, but it never does

The one constant chasing everyone away, Roger McGuinn.

Our cat fostering experience comes to an end today. The mom cat and 4 kittens got adopted last weekend at an event and these last 3 are being picked up later today. Yesterday was their birthday (15 weeks) They were all super cute and we will miss them but also more work than we expected so won't take on fostering this many at once again.

One last nap together

10.20 - Metric - "Stadium Love"

Bit of a sneaky copout pick here, as this is a quintessentially Canadian band, but Emily Haines was born in India so it'll meet my criteria since I've already crossed Canada off the list.  Raised in Ontario, but her mother ran a school for underprivileged children in India.  Coming up with 20 different countries for songs you actually like is a tough game.

Plenty of other Metric options, and other options with xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx, but this is a fun one.  Any given day, I might say "Twilight Galaxy", "Dead Disco", "Combat Baby", "Synthetica", "Help I'm Alive", "Gold Guns Girls", but I'm feeling this one today.

Updated list:

  • 1.14 - Canada - Regine Chassagne [Arcade Fire - "In the Backseat"]
  • 2.20 - Barbados - Rihanna Fenty [Rihanna - "Only Girl (in the World)"]
  • 3.14 - Ireland - Dolores O'Riordan [The Cranberries - "Dreams"]
  • 4.20 - New Zealand - Ella Yelich-O'Connor [Lorde - "Team"]
  • 5.14 - Scotland - Lauren Mayberry [CHVRCHES - "Clearest Blue"]
  • 6.20 - Iceland - Björk Guðmundsdóttir [Björk - "Hyperballad"]
  • 7.14 - Sweden - Robyn Carlsson [Robyn - "Dancing On My Own"]
  • 8.20 - Trinidad & Tobago.- Onika Maraj [Nicki Minaj - "Moment 4 Life (feat. Drake)"]
  • 9.14 - Denmark - Karen Marie Andersen [Major Lazer & DJ Snake - "Lean on (feat MØ)"]
  • 10.20 - India - Emily Haines [Metric - "Stadium Love"]

Help I'm Alive is my fav

And my go to Metric songs are "Satellite Mind", "Blindness", Dead Disco", Combat Baby", "Gimme Sympathy" and "Monster Hospital"

I've seen them quite a few times (because they're always playing in and around Toronto).

I was wondering where the hell you were. I @'d you early on, I think when someone picked Thin Lizzy, knowing you'd have some input on the selection (as well as many others). Good to see you back, my friend.

You went into the PSF, didn't you?
Thanks, my man. No, I’ve actually never been in the PSF - I’m pretty apolitical. Made a seemingly innocuous pun/joke in the RIP thread and got zapped for it.

When I get a chance, I may make my own selections for artists taken (if anyone cares). For Lizzy, I would have gone with Emerald.

Do it, man. There's a link to the artists/songs taken in the first post of this thread.

Pete Shelley died in 2018. Steve Diggle announced some Buzzcocks shows last year but they were cancelled due to Covid.

It looks like they have some dates in early 2022. No word about a new singet or if Diggle will do all the leads.

Did you decide to go see Bill Callahan?

I expected to hate it but loved it, too.

Honestly the only one coming to mind is Rattle and Hum. The theater was full of teenage girls and they screamed at the top of their lungs whenever Larry Mullen Jr. appeared onscreen.

I was at the concert where Bono climbed up the Vaillancourt Fountain and spray painted rock 'n roll stop the traffic on it.

Ok, second pick.  Going back to TX. Gotta make up for that ZZ snipe.

Freddie King - Going Down

The King of Texas blues.  This is him with the influence of Leon Russell in the early 70’s. Man, what a high energy and simply rockin’ tune.
Love this song. If I was a wrestler or baseball player, I think I would want this as walk out music.

No clock on weekends

Why is that? I would think that more people would be home on the weekends (rather than at work) and would be able to make more picks. In my fantasy league drafts the rounds are finished quicker on a Saturday or Sunday than on any day during the week.
