THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (1 Viewer)

Also one of my Kink's favorites is Death of a Clown, which misappropriate as my anthem for hopping on the wagon.
Also, do you mean "is appropriate" rather than "misappropriate"? Just curious. If so, best of luck. I'm pulling for you if that's what you're seeking.

Should have said "I misappropriate," though "is appropriate" works too. I appreciate the thoughts, but my consumption is way down. Extended Saturday afternoons cooking and meal‐prepping is the only trigger I allow myself nowadays.  Oh, and game day threads too.

Sedentarianism on the other hand is making me feel awful.  I need to get up off my easy chair.

Gotcha.

And use it or lose it, as the saying goes. I need to hop back on the elliptical after a few weeks off.

I looked back through the thread. There is nothing in NV's statement about the clock that it is off on weekends, so I'm not sure what that means. I assume, like drafts in the past, that the clock is off, but I do not know for sure.

Everyone's mileage may vary accordingly.

Also looking back through this thread, it does not appear that you slept last night.  What's your schedule?

Still up at five. Plan to sleep in a bit. I'm sore and feverish and every time I lay down, I'm hurting. I now have an armband around my arm of redness where they injected the flu and pneumonia shot, so that's no good.

My schedule is pretty normal, actually. I'm generally in bed by twelve and up at six or so, PST. Just last night...woof.

That's right...forgot about that.  Not sure if it would have a similar effect, but after the Covid vaccine I guzzled Nyquil and slept through the sick period.

I think that would have been a great idea had I thought of it. I'm not sure I have Nyquil around, but that's something to keep in mind.

I don't know what we've been doing in recent drafts - I'm good with no clock but also thinking maybe a 4 hour clock or something just to keep it from going to a complete stop.

3.18 - Thin Lizzy - Little Girl in Bloom (1973)

https://youtu.be/41oo2u3kvA4

When asked what comes to mind when given the name Thin Lizzy, the top answer would probably be "One Hit Wonder"

That is true for the US (they had three other Top 10 UK hits) but there was a lot more to the band than just The Boys Are Back In Town.

The problem with Thin Lizzy is that they peaked creatively before they did commercially and if The Boys Are Back In Town had come earlier in their career they probably would have enjoyed a lot more success on this side of the pond. As it was they had nothing close to as good to ever follow it up with.

Little Girl In Bloom was before they became a dual lead band and were just a rock trio with Eric Bell on guitar, Phil Lynott, bass/vocals and Brian Downey drums.

Little Girl In Bloom is a subtle, nuanced, layered, sophisticated ballad and perfectly produced (see Lynott's overlapping vocals). Eduardo Rivadavia of the publication AllMusic described the song as "absolutely flawless."

It is unfortunate that Thin Lizzy's US label, Vertigo, didn't dig into their vaults after the next single Jailbreak stiffed and had then released one of their earlier tunes like It's Only Money, Suicide, or their stellar cover of Bob Segar's Rosalie. If they had I feel this band would be much better remembered today.

I’m fine with no clock, I think that’s what normally happens. But nice people go on skip if they’re going to be out of pocket for the weekend.

This is a fine choice.

Thin Lizzy is not a 1HW in these drafts, though. They usually get selected and it's almost never " The Boys.....". @zamboni is who I consider our resident expert, but there are others who are deep into this band too.

It doesn't matter either way to me, so whatever you guys want is fine. I'm not doing anything this weekend besides being lazy, so I'll be around a good bit to take picks if someone (everyone) has a busy schedule.

Round 3

Little Queenie - Chuck Berry

After I took the Stones in round 1, I decided to build my playlist’s theme around the Stones - their influences, bands that were influenced by them, musicians in their circle…etc.

The Aerosmith and Muddy Waters selections put a ***** in my plans, but I’ll plow ahead anyway and figure it out.

It occurred to me yesterday it would have been good shtick for me, after choosing The Beatles, thereafter just to select Beatles covers as everyone’s best songs.

Otis Redding’s cover of Daytripper is a hoot.

Yes, I know I’m up.

I know we've talked about this before, but you're right. Otis doesn't even know (or care about) the lyrics. It doesn't matter, though, because it's still freaking awesome.

"Find me a groove, man"

3.xx:  AMY WINEHOUSE - BACK TO BLACK

Link

Like most others, hard choice that just might be different tomorrow.
it's her "Stairway" - you can love her deeper & better thru other songs but, if you're honest with yourself, you gotta come back to that her first "blaaack" in that song is the definitive musical trap door to romantic hell and she knew it and she framed it and took the same joy in sending listeners there that Sweeney Todd did making potmeat of his customers.

I love this song and picked it early in the timdraft we did back in 2016 or so for the '70s. There was an indie/punk band that did a moody cover of it, and it was so outstanding it got me to track down the Thin Lizzy version.

Love this song so much. Great pick, IMO.
I really don't know their stuff- had them written off as a metal-lite band when I was growing up (for absolutely no good reason at all, obviously).

I've seen them drafted lately, and Spotify threw that exact song into a playlist recently... which I loved.

thinking about 3 different picks now. I've drafted one of them recently, another in previous drafts... so I think I'll take one from a band I love that has a tremendous catalog that I don't remember drafting before. I won't hate you if you don't like them as many don't... or would've preferred their more obvious "best" song.

3- Sonic Youth- Schizophrenia

I remember buying Sister LP without having heard a track yet. But I knew the band, and I dug the cover art. IIRC, this is song 1, side 1. and the way it starts with just the drums and builds, retreats and then roars into a screaming guitar assault while still keeping a great hook and pop melody... flat out knocked me down at first and every other listen. And no offense to Teenage Riot- another incredible song- it's the journey of the track that wins me over. And tbh- I prefer Bull in the Heather, but maybe because of the video.
