It has bonus material or another 30 or so songs. Plus it has the Hendrix concert and the Otis concert. The remaster is really good though, including a really incredible 5.1 option. Usually older music works best in mono or stereo  but this remastering on par with The VU doc’s music mix.

1.09 - Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles

If we'd started last week, I would be doing a 40 Years of Post-Punk theme but I switched gears over the weekend to a female singer/songwriter thing.  I probably could have waited on Carlton but I wanted to swing the big schtick with my first rounder.

I  unapologetically love this song.  Everything works for me; the piano, strings, even her mannered vocals.  She's gone on to make five more albums including one released last year (2015's Liberman is really quite good).  A Thousand Miles is probably her best song but it's certainly her most successful. It went top 5 in the US, has almost a half billion Spotify streams and has financed her bougie boho lifestyle over the past two decades.

Gonna go through some of the picks I don't recognize tonight.

This song has been burned in my brain for years but I had no idea until now what it was called or who it was by. To me it's quintessential "HBO promo background music". Which is not a bad thing.

I've heard very little of their work, as they came from a genre I don't really care for and most of their career has overlapped with my parenting years. 

It's not annoying, so there's that. But not the kind of thing I'd listen to repeatedly. 

Is it just me, or on this song does this guy bear a slight vocal resemblance to the young Paul Simon?

Not going to follow you on this one.  I've listened to enough Vampire Weekend to know that I don't get it.  At all.

Nice to hear. I'm true fan. Still giggle at myself for taking them in the 1st round, but it is a sound/feel I wish I could find more of. Two albums released 17 and 19. Self-titled and Cry. A listen through both is a better "sweet ambient" listen than any playlist I can compile. 

Apricot de nada, when my daughter was dealing with her first love heartache, I... um... played with Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby on a digital audio workstation I mess with and sent it to her in college. She called it healing. We both love Cigs after Sex.

1.X - Sweet Thing by Van Morrison

Without invoking the Infinite Monkey Theorem, I don't think it's possible to improve upon Van's original.  One of the few songs where I like to wait for and pick off individual notes, chords, vocal inflections, etc.

Runner-ups in order were Wonderful Remark (and only the 8-minute version, not the 4:00 minutes of underacheivment version) and Into the Mystic.

Van is one of those artists where I only know the radio songs, and most radio stations don't play Astral Weeks, so... 

I can see why this song and album are such a big deal. Every touch is perfect.

Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good

Another artist that was played regularly on vinyl in our home growing up.   Her music is deeply personal to me and seems to be largely underappreciated by my generation.  I would play it in college and my friends thought I was weird AF and it certainly wasn't cool in the 90s, but I didn't care.   She's probably a top 5 vocalist for me with Aretha and a few others that haven't been selected yet.  

I chose this song as her best because I think it highlights her diversity as an artist and also gives glimpses at her amazing vocal range.   Is she soul/R&B/country/rock?   I also think the song has a timeless quality to it, at least for me.

As a non-beer-drinker, La Fin du Monde is one that I actually like.  Didn't know about this twist on it.

1.32: "Wasted Years", Iron Maiden

Adrian Smith's masterpiece for the band. Smith wrote the song, came up with the urgent clarion call of an opening, and played one of the band's most memorable guitar solos over the bridge. Steve Harris tucks in and keeps the energy going on bass, allowing Smith's playing to stand front and center. 

Bruce Dickinson, as the Somewhere in Time sessions began, had felt exhausted and listless after the group finished the year-long Power Slavery tour. For "Wasted Years", he dug deep and got right off that schneid with authority.

I'm not a metal guy and the only Maiden song I know by heart is Run to the Hills, which got a ton of play on MTV when I was a tween/teen. 

Feels like I know the opening guitar break more than the rest of the song -- I guess it gets used as bumper music a lot? 

But yeah, what a riff. And Bruce really brings it too, especially on the chorus.

 at the bold. I think I picked the best song, but I also think they're pretty consistent. They're often compared to _____ ____ who I think you recently drafted. Miles Davis is named as a primary influence, a phrasing thing according to the founder. So slow core channeling Mile's phrasing and compared to one of slowgaze dreampops biggest artists... works when the mood is right.

2.04 Smallpox Champion - Fugazi

The In on the Kill Taker album was peak Fugazi, IMO. This song has it all... brooding intro melding into jagged dissonant riffs, the stop on the dime break in the middle, and the anthemic singalong chorus at the end. Guy took the lead and Ian stayed back in the shadows. Who else could rock a song about a topic like this, except maybe The Clash? 

This CD sold for $8-10 new and admission to Fugazi shows (I saw three) was $6 (maybe they raised it to $7, cuz inflation, you know?). 

Emo-shmemo - THIS WAS PUNK ROCK

Fugazi was one of those acts I was peripheral to but never really dove into. Several friends played their albums regularly, so I got exposed to their songs here and there, but I couldn't name most of them. 

Really like the opening and how it jarringly shifts into something faster. And I love the interplay of the guitars.

So evocative of growing up in the 70's or 80's and driving on Sunday to Grandma's house.  Never realized I missed it or even remembered it until I heard this song. And I think this song encapsulates the best parts of their sound.
