THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

Round 5  Mayonaise - Smashing Pumpkins

1979 is probably their best song but Mayonaise is by far my favorite. I was a Freshman in college when Siamese Dream came out and i became an Instant fan.  Of all the bands of the era I think they hold up the best.

OK then you should change it to Paul McCartney as it was the flip side of a Paul McCartney single release and I don't the  think the single was ever sold as being by Wings.  It wasn't a band release it was a Paul McCartney release.

You're taking the Wings version, which I think is fine.  It was released as the b-side in the US and also on the Wings compilation Wingspan.

I love both versions of "Coming Up," and it's my sixth favorite Wings (or PM & Wings) song, after "Band on the Run," "Let Me Roll It," "Little Lamb Dragonfly" (a sentimental favorite), "Live and Let Die," and "Daytime Nighttime Suffering."  Or seventh if you count the live version of "Maybe I'm Amazed."  I don't know what song I think is "best," though.  Probably "Band on the Run."

Coincidentally, when I did my countdown, Uruk-Hai predicted I would have "Coming Up" as my favorite Paul post-Beatles song, and I believe it's his favorite, too.
The live version of Maybe I'm Amazed is the song I almost took at 2 overall.

5.20  Elliott Smith - Waltz #2

Not much time for a write-up, as I'm trying to work while keeping this going.  This might be my favorite from him, and at least in my top three.  In terms of song-writing, I think it's his best.  Love the piano, too, and of course I'm always a sucker for waltz time.

As usual when I choose a song from him, I'll state that he was killed by his girlfriend, not a suicide, and I will die on this hill.

Siamese Dream is amazing and I agree it holds up well.

My favorite is "'Rocket"

Bullet With Butterfly Wings is my fav. The Pumpkins are one of those bands I don't really listen to anymore.

For the record, I'd have taken the original "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Souvenir," or "Too Many People" as Paul's best solo songs.  My favorites are those plus "That Day Is Done" and "Calico Skies."

I read this as some group called Monkberry Moon Delight singing a song called Sir Paul

Took me looking at the google sheet to figure out it was Paul McCartney. Alas, my plan to not draft him has finally come to fruition.

This came up on my Beatles  Spoitfy playlist as a recommendation. Came up after Nowhere Man and I was jammin, but then it was like "WTF Spotify, this ain't Beatles". And then I looked and was floored. THAT'S McCartney? I've reheard it a hundred times and Here and there I can make the voice connection, but mostly NOT!

Elliott Smith is one of my all time favorites… honestly thought I could wait a few rounds. Waltz 2 is so good… but all of his stuff is. From Angeles and son of Sam to his twilight and can’t make a sound I can’t count the hours I have spent with Elliott smith playing in the background. Stained glass eyes or No name #5 might be my favorites, but it’s so hard to pick just one. Kudos to a great pick.

Rocket is my favorite as well.  However, I've found Corgan's voice really grates my ears in my old age.  Other than a few tracks, I'm usually changing stations if they come on the radio.

I planned to see him at the University of Utah Ballroom on 9/19/03.  I didn't go.  :(

That song along with Between the Bars, Speed Trials, A Fond Farewell, King's Crossing, and all the others are my favorites..

5.14 - CHVRCHES - "Clearest Blue"

To be honest, a band that I thought I'd end up loving more than I do.  They're good, sure, but I can't help but feel like there's an unrealized potential under the surface here.

That said, their discography high points are amazing, and this is one of them.  A solid 2:45ish of buildup, crescendo, and an extended catchy synthy dance outro.

Also, well, the further this draft goes, the more scarce these countries get in terms of draftable vocalists.  I've only got 2 on the shortlist for Scotland, and this is probably the most snipe-able scarce-country band left on my list, if I had to guess.
Great band, great pick. I have a huge crush on the lead singer. Whether she is singing or just speaking in an interview, I melt.

Two of my faves are: Get Out and Graffiti.

My 2nd choice was one that you or no one else has mentioned, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five or 1985. Although I agree that LIve and Let Die is also arguable as best because McCartney was just given a song title and had to reverse engineer the song from that and came up with something brilliant.

I think the Jimmy McCullogh solos are the best.

Wow, I love this song but am surprised to see anyone take it as his best!  Not disagreeing; just an interesting pick.
"With my green metal boots I'm preparing to shoot up the city. And the ring at the end of my nose makes me look rather pretty. It's a pity there's nobody here to witness the end. Save for my dear old friend and confidante Mademoiselle Kitty" has forever been my favorite, but MMD was just so not sounding like him that it makes it the "best"

New draft strategy - I'm gonna draft spend five minutes swirling through a list of random songs I've liked in the past and then throw one against the wall.

ETA: Or I might snipe @krista4.  I feel like my sniping abilities are being overlooked.  :jealous:

One of my favorite songs off of "Band On The Run". "Jet" is great too.

I'm not taking that snipe- it's all you.

I have a pick ready if I'm up.

I love this song, too.  It was my next-favorite after the others I listed.

@Pitchfork Are we really counting Paul McCartney and Wings as two different artists?

I'm fairly certain he used PM as an example when we were discussing the draft in the prior thread, and stated solo and with other bands would be counted separately, but we wouldn't make distinctions among different line-ups of the same band (the "Pip/Neil rule").  I can't think of any reason that Wings would incorporate Paul solo, especially insomuch as The Beatles didn't.

Better publicist does NOT make a better talent nor performer/ performance . I 😍 Fergie, but that Whitney performance is just soooo awesome
Think Eephus is being sarcastic, but who knows.

Did you make a third pick?  I was busy cooking and want to make sure I didn't miss it.  And once you're caught up, do you want to be on the clock again, or auto-skip?

Round 4:

Use Me -- Bill Withers

Writeup later. Continue to skip me until tomorrow morning.
This is the grittiest of Withers' hits, drawing on both blues and funk, and features tremendous interplay between bass (Melvin Dunlap) and clavinet (Ray Jackson). It's one of those songs where you feel each note in your bones. It's also one of the few songs about sex in which we glean multiple people's perspectives -- the sugar daddy narrator, his mistress and his brother and his friends who think she's playing him. The payoff is in the last verse:

Talkin' 'bout you usin' people
It all depends on what you do
It ain't too bad the way you're usin' me
'Cause I sure am usin' you to do the things that you do

I never get to take these guys because they always get took first.

There are other's that will be preferred as best perhaps, but this song has always encapsulated what makes them distinct and interesting for me.

5- The National- Mistaken For Strangers

other in consideration- BLoodbuzz Ohio, Squalor Victoria

I need to listen to more from these guys.  Everything I hear, I like, but I never delve in further.
