I love the early, southern flavored albums of Outkast, like SPCM and ATLiens, but I think this song is when they were at their peak. the rapid fire delivery over the DnB track is sick, and they knew they were hot and gave zero #####. strong.

This record damn near broke the black community in half. Before, you sang secular or you sang gospel. Fans of each kind of ignored & tolerated the others' existence as long as the artist stayed in his/her lane. Ray Charles didn't stay in his lane.

Sam Cooke had to change his name two years after this record was released just to get "You Send Me Out" out in hopes his gospel fans wouldn't know (it didn't work - everyone knew it was him).

"I Got A Woman" is steeped in gospel musically and vocally. It's NOT steeped in gospel in subject matter, which was a problem. Blues artists were at least as outraged as gospel musicians. I recall reading an essay about this record and one horrified bluesman saying something like "He's crying! Like he's in church!". He apparently was worried about a backlash against himself and others like him.

He was right to be worried. Millions of churchgoers had never heard anything like this outside of church and screamed blasphemy. Millions of non-churchgoers had never heard anything like it, period. It changed the way pop artists sang and the way pop songs could sound forever.

It's hard to overstate how important Ray Charles was to the way Western music evolved. His contributions as a musician and bandleader can still be heard today. But it was that voice and the way he used it that had the deepest impact.

"I Can't Stop Loving You". Another genre-shatterer.

"Hit The Road Jack". My mother had an album with this on it when I was a little kid. My brother & I would play it over and over just to crack up at the female singer busting Ray's chops and Ray's "What you SAY?" responses.

The Mamas and Papas version does connect as it was a soul song they covered and put into their pop style. However it still has a lot of the roots of soul in its bones. I think I plan to keep things in a soul-funk-blues-pop spectrum. Hopefully it all comes together.

5.31 Bird Set Free, Sia

I almost went chalk with Chandelier, but the lyrics are more powerful in this one.  

I've always liked Sia when I hear her- great songwriter,  great voice. not my sweet spot, in terms of the pop stylings, but full respect for her. I don't know this tune at all... but think I prefer Chandelier as a more iconic vocal- not sure I'm going to remember this one, tbh.

A piece of power pop perfection. And by far my favorite song from him. Girlfriend gets all the love but I like 100% Fun more. 

I like Altered Beast more than both of those!

But Sick of Myself is great -- my second-favorite from 100% Fun after Giving It Back.
