THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (9 Viewers)

Oops. I didn’t know k4 had summoned you, wikkid. That makes me feel bad I said anything. Your opinions are always illuminating, even when I want to disagree or add addenda. Thanks.
Without going back to see the context, I thought wikkid’s “hadda be said” (or whatever it was) referred to what Lennon said in “Imagine,” not to his own post.

6.32 - Steely Dan - Peg

I have about 10 favorite songs from them, and this is definitely one of them.

Show Biz Kids for me! Rick Derringer on slide guitar.

Steely Dan - Show Biz Kids

🎶After closing time
At the Guernsey Fair
I detect the El Supremo
From the room at the top of the stairs
Well I've been around the world
And I've been in the Washington Zoo
And in all my travels
As the facts unravel
I've found this to be true🎶

Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into” You is a top 5 Trip song alltime, across any genre.

I know it was too mainstream to be picked in this draft, but it’s a perfect song.

Sorry for the delay - west coaster just waking up.

I almost took this last round but couldn’t decide which song to take. Still can’t decide so I’ll roll the dice and choose:

6.32 - Steely Dan - Peg

This is the other band I mentioned that I was surprised was still on the board despite being an acquired taste. And I know krista HATES them.

My pick would have been King of the World, the closer of their second record Countdown to Ecstasy, which has always fascinated me because it's much harder-rocking than their other records; they wrote and arranged the songs with needing to perform them live at top of mind -- this was obviously no longer a consideration after 1974.

6.33 Cage the Elephant – Shake Me Down

Matt Shultz’s vocals may be an acquired taste for some people, but these guys definitely can write a catchy tune.  This is probably my favorite, with Back Against the Wall and Cigarette Daydreams getting honorable mentions.

My favorite is My Old School or Everyone's Gone to the Movies, but Deacon Blues is probably their "best".

I’m not a Steely Dan fan but hard to deny their musicianship.

Hey Nineteen has some “pop appeal”

ETA - I’ve tried really hard on Steeley, can’t get there

7.01 - System of a Down – B.Y.O.B.

I feel weird picking this one having already picked a “protest” style Rise Against song, but I think this is my favorite of theirs.  These guys are not for everyone, and some of their songs are sort of bizarre, but they definitely have a unique sound, and are good for jumping around like a crazy person if that’s your thing.  I’m also a fan of Toxicity and, maybe more of a hot take, Deer Dance.

I am in meetings from 11:30 to 12 ET and from 1 to 2 ET, and am running out to grab lunch in between (I am in the office today). I can be skipped if my turn comes up before 2 PM ET.

Another snipe - I thought I was the only one who ever took SOAD in these drafts. This is my favorite guitar hero song by far.

Not a huge Steely Dan fan, but you might want to check out Show Biz Kids if you haven't heard it (posted link above) which was a bit different for them.

This is probably the longest I’ve waited to take a hip-hop song in one of these drafts.

7.02 - A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhyme

One of my all time favorites. Backyard barbecue music at its finest.

Huge Tribe fan here (before it was cool to be a Tribe fan, aka their renaissance in the 2000s)

My favorite East Coast hip hop act and probably what I still listen to the most of any classic hip hop.

My favorites are "Award Tour" and "Check the Rhime" and "Electric Relaxation"

This is my second snipe, Rock Action took Smokey and now Yo Mama took Tribe.   Always remember, never forget.

Toxicity is one of my favorite albums!  I prolly woulda went with Chop Suey, Forest, or Aerials, or maybe Spiders from their first album....BYOB is great though....nice pick!

I wondered if that pick would get peeps sniffin around Kyuss..lol
Had them on my list(50 Million Year Trip) but thought they were safe since I'm usually the only one drafting stoner rock.

Another snipe - I thought I was the only one who ever took SOAD in these drafts. This is my favorite guitar hero song by far.
I've taken them before and had Aerials on my list.

Great band and the correct pick here.

Ha, funny you should mention Guitar Hero, as we still play it as a family sometimes, and BYOB and Fortunate Son are two songs that we always have my son do the singing.  He has a tendency to really ham up the vocals, and BYOB is perfect for that.

far be it from me to deprive you of any chance to stick a "kick me, i'm PoMo" sign on the back of my sweater...

I'd give my left testicle to see the Ramones live in the 70s.
i did, and i can tell you, the Ramones were a lot easier to take once you got the joke. as i've told here b4, i quit showbiz in  '77 due to an ulcer and an invitation from a gorgeous hippie chick to join her at her Santa Fe commune. my radio/musicbiz pals gave me a sendoff based around a Ramones/Talking Heads show. i had heard of but not heard the Ramones and had no idea who the Heads were. the Ramones were a mess and the Heads only memorable cuz everybody thought the guy singing Psycho Killer might actually be a psycho killer. they gave me the albums from both bands but i found out that the commune i went to only had electricity in one building. i brought the records to the sockhops we'd have at the big house. the girls wanted nothing to do with the Ramones and changed Psycho Killer to a dance called the Psycho Chicken. dancing naked w a dozen wing-flapping commune chicks (hi, Pip) to Squeaky Byrne's musical protestations is one of the memories that still warm this 70yo heart.

but i listened to the Ramones a lot once i got to civilization and sought them out once i returned to showbiz & the East. like Patti Smith and many CBGB bands, if you arent in on the beginning, it takes a while if ever to get in.

The Musical Box is always the Genesis song that captures my attention.  Dig the Firth of Fifth (it does lean a bit strong into a Yes sound, which is not a bad thing).
my runaway favorite Genesis (tho "Selling England" is my fave of their albums). it was always their highight in performance and Genesis Live is still high in my rotation. i do everything on headphones now in deference to the peace-of-ear of me 96yo Da. he doesnt mind my singalonging, except for that "NOW..NOW..NOW..NOW..NOW" SONG.

Difford does look a bit like an 'edgehog.

he knows that. if i had first and/or only encountered lefties as tired & toothless as those extant after Ronnie Raygun slapped em all down i might too have trouble telling between the hapless & hopeful ones. people of the last few gens havent seen a good example of a "progressive", which is why we've never gotten to run things. if he insists that i wear the Commie millstone, OK. but i wont dance

Round 7

After John(and Paul), this was the next vocalist who blew me away the first time I heard him. Bought the album for this song and couldn't wait for the new Sabbath album to release when I heard he was their new vocalist.

Rainbow-Man on the Silver Mountain
This made me think of a hazy memory......Not long after RJD passed my bro in law and I got a bit tuned up at a dive bar on the Oregon coast.....like a real salty dog kinda joint.....we did a Dio karaoke tribute!  Lol.  Holy Diver and Last in Line....brought the house down....all 15 people!

dang. they're on my list, but so many good songs that I was having a hard time deciding which was their best.

Round 7:

Long Snake Moan -- PJ Harvey

The essence of her badassery is neatly encapsulated into this song. If you think women can't have BDE, this will change your mind.

It particularly stands out because it appears in the middle of an album that was much more intricate than her previous work.
Oh hell yeah. I had to look up bde and the definition included the word cisgender so I had to look that up too. The future is weird, but I chuckled. And I agree about PJ. She's almost as scary as Krista.

@Northern Voice's 30 minutes are up. I don't see him at the bottom so

I'm through bands/artists I think could be sniped from one of my hopefully easy to to transition genres. I've only ever been able to take MBV in small doses, one to three songs at a time, yet I was surprised at the number of songs I thought deserved a shot. Narrowing my song tournament to 8 wasn't reasonable, so 16 entered. The tournament was cancelled the 2nd time I listened to this. 10 years ago it would have been a banger. This chill cover does it for me. Fits my mix better than anything else too.

7.7 My Bloody Valentine - We Have All the Time in the World

Also another insipid white girl ear worm. That makes 5 of 7. And one insipid black girl and Horace Andy's androgynous racially vague crooning on Angel. It's gonna be hard for a male vocalist to make this playlist. This wasn't the plan.

@Dr. Octopus

These are the advantages of being too lazy/pressed for time to come up with a theme.
Right? I'm glad it's not just me........

Well, the "pressed for time" thing may not apply as much to me most times. Although, I was this morning and hence my pathetic write up for Parliament.

No F'n way!!!!!  I went back and forth on QOTSA or Kyuss.  I figured I could wait on Kyuss dammit!!!  I'll trade ya!  Haha

imo, Kyuss is waaaaaay better than QOTSA.  They are a huge influence to the stoner/desert rock scene of today.....and their remains spawned a bunch of good music.

I went back and forth on which Kyuss is my fave...... ultimately, I settled on Phototropic. And then you sniped me!!!

Funny, QOTSA going off the board was my indicator that it is time to jump on Kyuss

Similar to how when Heart goes off the board, Blondie can't be too too far behind

7.03  Blondie - One Way Or Another

Karen Carpenter had an angelic voice; I should listen to more of their stuff.  @simeywould approve!  Where is simey, anyway?
Hey, k4! What's up? Evidently not your bike skills. 😛 If you ever want to conquer riding a bike, it's not too late. I've always loved leisurely bike riding. There is a sense of freedom about it.  Cruising around on a bike is also forgiving on your joints if you have arthritis in your feet or knees like me. You need a comfortable seat though, or it isn't forgiving on your buttocks.

Anyway, I give the The Carpenters pick a 👍. Just to show how good she is without even trying, she did a work lead of "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" back in '75, so her band would know the melody. The song was written for her and her brother, but Richard felt they had enough ballads on the album, so the song was ditched.  Barry Manilow recorded it instead. Years later, Richard found the song on a master tape, and in 1994 added music to the song and released it. You can hear her turning the page while doing the work lead around 1:50. She sounds great.
