THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

This is a sister pick to Arctic Monkeys A Certain Romance, I took last round.

I see this as the 90s massive Brit indie storytelling smash, epic, pinnacle, just like ACR in the 00s. And again, it's their best but there are others that on different days are my favourite*

7.06 - Common People - Pulp

*Disco 2000, Do You Remember the First Time, Like a Friend, Razzmatazz, Pencil Skirt

Technical support request... I can see past the 'L' s on the spreadsheet on my Samsung phone. No matter what I do to zoom in or out or flip sideways. Any chance anyone knows what I'm doing wrong? TIA

7.10 - Aimee Mann - 4th of July

I think I may have drafted this in Genrepalooza but it's always been one of my favorite songs of hers and I wanted my mix to have something in 3/4 time. It's another breakup song but kind of a complex one with a perspective change between the verses and the chorus.

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD - ROCK AND ROLL WOMAN (1967)

I could have gone with the more well known hits - but I think most recognize it once they hear it.  It's definitely my favorite of a bunch of their songs that I love.
I almost took them -- and this very song. Would definitely have taken them earlier if I couldn't get Neil.

This song is the template for CSN(Y) and all that followed from it, and may well be the best thing Stephen Stills ever wrote.

7.18 - Pet Shop Boys - Rent  (1987)

Rent has been described as "probably the most beautiful, cynical, danceable and bitter pop song ever made."

https://youtu.be/uaU1J8KMWbY

🎶But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent 🎶

This was the follow up single release to their huge worldwide hit, What Have I Done To Deserve This? and was Top 10 in the UK.

In North America, the song was not released as a single and was only included on certain editions of Pet Shop Boys With Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done To Deserve This? usually as a B-side.

With the lack of promotion it is not surprising that the song failed to chart on this side of the pond. Perhaps their US label EMI felt that a pop song about giving up happiness for money was a lost cause, so they didn't even try.

7.19 Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Growing up in the rural Midwest in the 80s Lynyrd Skynyrd and southern rock in general were intertwined in our DNA. Obviously Free Bird is a southern rock anthem, but Simple Man is my favorite. Its fun to play on the acoustic and have a sing-along around a campfire too.

Side story. I grew up in the corner of SE Kansas just miles from the Missouri and Oklahoma border. The drinking age in Kansas didn't turn to 21 till 1985 when I was 11 years old. I remember vividly on Friday and Saturday night our little town filling up with kids pouring over the border to drink legally. Because of that, our little town of 3000 people had more bars than churches, and it wasn't particularly close. Bars like the Green Parrot, the Golden Hawk, the Duck in, Freddy a-go go's, Sgt. Peppers and others I cant remember... As you might imagine there were a lot of fights that went on with locals and out of towners. But one of these bars had a bad reputation for being the  roughest  place, but with great live music. It was called The Ranch.

It was here in 1976 that Steve Gaines band Crawdad performed there farewell show just before Steve went and joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. My dad and his friends were there that night. I was two years old lol.

Crawdad Live at The Ranch

Gaines and his sister Cassie were from Miami Ok... just about 20 minutes down the road from my hometown and had performed in the area for a while and had became kinda local heroes.  Now, at least according to my late father... other bands like Kansas also played the Ranch in their early days.

Anyway, I always loved Lynyrd Skynyrd and am happy to pick them here.

The Walkmen - We've Been Had

Most people would go with "The Rat," but I prefer the piano in this one rather than the guitar bombast of that one. I always loved the couplet below. Sort of reminds me of myself, but with different details.

See me age nineteen with some dumb haircut from
1960/moving to New York City

7.15 Sam & Dave "Wrap It Up"

Quintessential Stax act. Sam More is a great singer. Dave Prater's not much better than me, but he gave it his all.
Surprised they lasted this long...big fan.

"Soul Man" will always be my favorite, although I know it or "Hold On I'm Comin" are the chalky picks.

Back in the day I didn't know much about Lynyrd Skynyrd or their music. I knew about the tragic plane crash. But   that fact, "Freebird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" was it.

Thanks to Spotify and some used records, I now have better knowledge and appreciation of their music.
