THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

Driving, sorry.

Buddy Holly - Crying, Waiting, Hoping

some well known trivia for those that may not know...

Holly helped give Waylon Jennings his start.  Waylon gave up his seat to the Big Bopper on the plane that Holly died on.  The Big Bopper took Waylon's seat.

More trivia regarding the ill-fated flight:

Ritchie Valens got the remaining seat on the flight because he won a coin toss with Holly's other band member Tommy Allsup.

And the main reason Holly chartered the plane was to get ahead of the tour bus so that he could wash his clothes and have some clean underwear.

The day rock and roll died.....because of a shart

It is fine, leave it as it is - draft moves along pretty well on the weekend (slows down late in the evening but I don't see that as a problem). I was hoping to get in some picks this weekend if the draft was done like last weekend, because I have jury duty next week and may not be able to make any picks during the day.
Just to be clear, and especially given the pace of today, you are much less likely to get two picks in on the weekend, with no clock versus going to one pick per day. But it seems that it's what people want so we'll stick with no clock for the weekend

I stan pick/day weekends.

I'd vote no clock and no one-pick-a-day for the weekend. I say that as someone who would be at an advantage with either on Saturday/Sunday. We're moving along nicely. I only put myself on autoskip because the pace was such that my picks were coming on weekday nights and I didn't want to have to keep bugging folks with lists.

Yeah, we're going to stick with no clock for this weekend, I'm just pointing out that the rationale of any given drafter being more likely to get picks in is incorrect in my opinion

Mer De Noms by A Perfect Circle gets better with age, imo.  Saw them in Seattle when it came out many moons ago.  I could've picked Orestes, Rose, or Sleeping Beauty as well.

Anyway, I went with a beautiful song about rejection...3 Libras

"But I threw you the obvious
Just to see if there's more behind
The eyes of a fallen angel
Eyes of a tragedy

Here I am expecting
Just a little bit too much from the wounded
but I see, see through it all
See through, see you"

9.18 - Junior Walker - What Does It Take  (Live 1985 on Letterman)

https://youtu.be/f_amB431E4U

With Jon Anderson of Yes on tambourine.

Walker always seemed cut from a different cloth than the rest of the Hitsville U.S.A. stable. He didn't really have the formula Motown sound even when he was doing a Holland–Dozier–Holland composition like (I'm a) Road Runner. I pretty much felt that he just did his own thing.

Very nice. I had him as a late round option since he usually falls pretty far. I love Jr Walker. Shotgun is basically the anthem for the Detroit fireworks.

Buddy Holly - Crying, Waiting, Hoping
:hifive:

Buddy Holly was set up better for the '60s than any of the '50s rockers with the exception of - maybe - Ray Charles, Elvis, and Sam Cooke. I'm not as much into lyrics as I am melodies and the way a recording sounds, but Holly was doing some wild #### with his. Dylan shamelessly ripped him off. I'm convinced that Holly would have continued to be vital all through the '60s and would have elevated during the early '70s, when the whole singer-songwriter movement became a thing.

I'll save my rant against the Rolling Stone-inspired myth that "rock died" between Holly's death and the British Invasion for later, but it's coming.

It. Is. Coming.

8.19 Frank Sinatra "It Was A Very Good Year"

It's probably impossible to pick a "best" with an artist like this, but I'll throw this one out there. To me, Sinatra in his prime does melancholy better than anyone else. Overall, I like his slower stuff more than the up-tempo songs.
Interesting draft. Nancy Sinatra gets chosen before her Daddy, Frank.

I would have lost a lot of $ betting against that happening.

Round 9.23  -  ZZ Top  -  La Grange

There were so many choices, I just went with this, but Jesus Just Left Chicago from the same album would have done as well.  Or really anything.  It's all wonderful.

RIP Dusty Hill.  We miss you.
Aaargh.  I had "Heard it on the X" queued up for my next pick. I just saw them on Tuesday night in Melbourne. Billy still crushes it, but he's waif skinny these days. They closed with Tush and used pre-recorded Dusty vocals in tribute. I thought they handled it well. I'll reserve my comments about Elwood Francis.

9.24 Neutral Milk Hotel Oh Comely

With basically only two albums, it shouldn’t be so hard to pick a best but I made an argument to myself for a bunch of songs. I ended up picking my favorite. It’s not as immediately rewarding as a song like Aeroplane or Ghost but at least as good, IMO.
it was between Weezer and NMH for me this round, I too would have went with Oh Comely, but King of Carrot Flowers would be up there too

Had a "King of Carrot Flowers" beer like two weeks ago.

Hmmm.  Love the band, but Judith by a wide margin here.

9.10 - Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On

Tough to choose a best one so I went with my favorite track from my favorite album of hers.
Found out about Neko Case when I saw her perform at a local Folk Music Festival (the name doesn't reflect all of the artists that perform there). I was blown away by her voice. I was a volunteer, so I also got to meet her offstage. Charming doesn't even begin to describe her.

Lover her solo and band work.

I've seen her live 10-15 times and she's always so personable, charming and funny.

And then there's that voice

Shouldn't have been that surprising. The draft is not to name the best singer or the best band, just the best song from a singer or from a band.

I wouldn't have touched Frank Sinatra in this draft as I would have been absolutely overwhelmed trying to choose between let's say NYNY, My Way or Fly Me To The Moon, etc., and I don't know how I could justify any one choice over the other. Maybe others felt the same which is why he hadn't yet been taken.

With Nancy, as with some of the other artists I have picked, I went with an unconventional lesser known choice that I happened to like better than any of her hits. Plus I prefer to expose some people here to songs they may have not heard before or are not that familiar with.

Really enjoyed their documentary on Netflix.  Their soul/blues beginnings really help explain their unique sound.

A friend of a friend was their tour manager so I was able to watch the show from backstage about 15 years ago...dudes can seriously jam.  Also, tour manager friend said they had the most insane, detailed pre-show ritual...down to how their dinner was organized on their dinner plates.

Can’t wait to hear that. It was a rough period with Holly’s death, Berry getting brought up on charges, another legend going religious, another marrying their young cousin and the payola scheme being exposed.
