THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (1 Viewer)

14.XX  There Will Be Fireworks Youngblood

A few rounds ago, I picked a newly released song by Dead Modern.  These bands have the same lead singer, Nicholas McManus.  I don’t think There Will Be Fireworks has much popularity either.  They don’t even have a Wikipedia page for what that’s worth. Band members have mentioned that they have regular jobs.  They only have two LPs and an EP, the last of which was released in 2013.  Apparently they are working on a new album but I won’t count on that until it hatches.

Anyway, I think all their music is fantastic.  The band’s name sounds pretentious but it is fitting as many of the songs have crescendos or abrupt musical explosions.  I almost picked River and Here Is Where as their best song.  There are a lot of good options.  @shuke @Maik Jeaunz @krista4 and @The Dreaded Marco mentioned that they liked the Dead Modern song so I hope they all give this a listen.

14th rounder for me:

Townes Van Zandt - For The Sake Of The Song (Live at the Old Quarter version)

I know, I always take him.*  I wasn't going to this time, but sniping has my eligible draft list getting too short.

I don't know if this is his best song, but it's one of them.  I also considered "Waitin' Around To Die," "Rex's Blues," "Lungs," and my personal favorite "If I Needed You."

*Unless @simeysnipes me.

Cool, will definitely listen to all three songs.

Is tomorrow when the Dead Modern EP is being released?

I actually had this typed up as Waitin' Around To Die but then made a last-second switch.  So many amazing songs to choose from.

Here is a live clip from the Shindig TV show of Mr. Excitement closing out the show with Baby Workout. The Chambers Brothers and The Blossoms (with Darlene Love) are doing backing vocals and at the end you can see Bobby Sherman dancing in the closing credits.

Jackie Wilson - Baby Workout - Live on Shindig 1965

I wish I had half of Wilson's coordination and maybe a third of Sherman's hair

Wow we are digging into some very new and under the radar stuff if we are dealing with new Bandcamp releases. I’ll have to try and check that out.

I see Bon Jovi was drafted, so I thought "Why not?" with my Round 14 pick.

I've got "Photograph" by Def Leppard. Mock the song choice, mock the band, I don't care. I'll be cranking it up to 11 with a big smile on my face.

Saw them live with Journey 4ish years ago at the LA Forum...sounded great.

My hot take Def Leppard pick is "Hysteria."

But man, do these guys have some god awful lyrics.

Yeah, Eastern is good for daytime football timing.  Sucks at night, though.  Central is the perfect time zone, or at least my favorite that I've lived in.
I think Mountain would be best overall but that’s the one of the four I’ve never spent much time in.

14th rounder for Binky:

Spirit - I Got A Line On You

" love these guys and you don't hear much about them when 60s groups are mentioned.  I don't remember anyone in the mid-late 70s that didn't have couple Spirit albums.  As usual ...tough choice, right up to the last minute I was going to go with one of their lesser known hit - Dark Eyed Woman - but then wanted to go with the softer and classic - Nature's Way"

This is one I got sniped on. Was going to go with Mr. Skin:

Spirit - Mr. Skin (1970) Jay Ferguson vocals.

Yep Eastern absolutely sucks for night games. Especially as a HS teacher. I have to wake up at like 5:45.

Didn't check if these guys are picked, but I doubt it...time to make this draft a lil more fuzzy...Swedish stoner/desert/fuzz....in my top 3 to see live right now.....I coulda picked multiple songs here but I'll go with....

Truckfighters Majestic

Round 14:

Back to Basom — Ween

White Pepper is their most “normal” album and this is my favorite from it. It’s a bit Beatlesque, a bit Floydian and a lot stunning.

I have kind of thing for Ween and I'm not really sure why. They're weird! I like this one a lot.  Good pick.  I might've went Transdermal Celebration, Ocean Man.....or my hot take Bananas and Blow...haha.  That one is kind of an inside joke with my fishin buddy....I put it on a mix disk a long time ago and it always kinda pops up.

Update, 6 more countries to go.  Should probably pick an American at some point.

  • 1.14 - Canada - Regine Chassagne [Arcade Fire - "In the Backseat"]
  • 2.20 - Barbados - Rihanna Fenty [Rihanna - "Only Girl (in the World)"]
  • 3.14 - Ireland - Dolores O'Riordan [The Cranberries - "Dreams"]
  • 4.20 - New Zealand - Ella Yelich-O'Connor [Lorde - "Team"]
  • 5.14 - Scotland - Lauren Mayberry [CHVRCHES - "Clearest Blue"]
  • 6.20 - Iceland - Björk Guðmundsdóttir [Björk - "Hyperballad"]
  • 7.14 - Sweden - Robyn Carlsson [Robyn - "Dancing On My Own"]
  • 8.20 - Trinidad & Tobago.- Onika Maraj [Nicki Minaj - "Moment 4 Life (feat. Drake)"]
  • 9.14 - Denmark - Karen Marie Andersen [Major Lazer & DJ Snake - "Lean on (feat MØ)"]
  • 10.20 - India - Emily Haines [Metric - "Stadium Love"]
  • 11.14 - England - Dua Lipa [Dua Lipa - "Don't Start Now"]

They’re weird, but they’re immensely talented and know how to craft a song. And they are an incredible live band.

Unfortunately the two founders hate each other and only keep touring for financial reasons, so we won’t see any more records from them.

  ed this!  Thanks for the new(-to-me) finds with these two bands!

I should listen to more Eels.  Great song.

There it is!  He's been on my short list for a while.  Currently, Be Here To Love Me is my favorite.  There's just something about that happy/sad emotion in his music.

Damn, sniped. This is the band I have seen the most in concert. Neil Finn steps out of his brother's shadow from their time together in xxxxx xxx and he knocks it out of the park. Of course Tim would later join him in Crowded House.

Neil Finn is a lyrical master and combines sweet, light melodies with dark, bitter lyrics at times. Mean To Me, Fall At Your Feet, There Goes God are all brilliant. Hard to pick just one, my fave today is:

Love This Life.

https://youtu.be/U1_Ody4BObg

I was not familiar with Mean To Me, so I checked it out and found it to be a much rockier tune than I had expected - not to the point of, let's say, the early rough mix of Black And White Boy, https://youtu.be/sw8YG6tILFU but with a harder edge than most of their catalogue.

Found a live version at Melbourn from 1986:

Crowded House- Mean To Me - Live Melbourn 1986.

https://youtu.be/LKH_cIuTEkI

The most beautiful voice I've ever heard.  Also, he wrote one of the greatest country music songs of all-time, made popular by another great who will probably not go undrafted much longer.

Round 14:  Undo the Right, Johnny Bush

Happy Turkey Day fellow song drafters.

Commodores - Nightshift

Post Lionel Richie, but I think it's their best.   "Brick House" is probably my second choice.
A tribute to my playlist

Marvin, he was a friend of mine
And he could sing his song
His heart in every line

Jackie, hmm, hey what you doing now
It seems like yesterday, when we were working out

Incredible voice.

I think the other great you mentioned has intimidated people with his gigantic catalogue.
