14.xx  A Good Reason To Grow Old - Owl John

I missed on drafting Frightened Rabbit when @krista4 sniped me ( :)  ) so I'm going to take something from Scott Hutchison's first solo project, Owl John.  This is as good as any of the FR albums and even better than some.  I probably listen to this entire album more than any of theirs.  It's in a very similar vein to FR, unlike his yet to be drafted other side project (also quite good).

And this song is so beautiful and poignant given his passing.

A few rounds ago, I picked a newly released song by Dead Modern.  These bands have the same lead singer, Nicholas McManus.  I don’t think There Will Be Fireworks has much popularity either.  They don’t even have a Wikipedia page for what that’s worth. Band members have mentioned that they have regular jobs.  They only have two LPs and an EP, the last of which was released in 2013.  Apparently they are working on a new album but I won’t count on that until it hatches.

Anyway, I think all their music is fantastic.  The band’s name sounds pretentious but it is fitting as many of the songs have crescendos or abrupt musical explosions.  I almost picked River and Here Is Where as their best song.  There are a lot of good options.  @shuke @Maik Jeaunz @krista4 and @The Dreaded Marco mentioned that they liked the Dead Modern song so I hope they all give this a listen.

I don't like this one quite as much as that Dead Modern tune but it's also good.  Thanks for the heads up.

I didnt know they hate each other.....I have only ever heard some live stuff, but I can imagine, based on that...

Without spotlighting too much, I do wanna say I like one of their solo albums quite a bit

You know who lost at 1:30 PST? Me! I'm staring Micah Parsons at LB in an IDP league. His position these days? Defensive line. I drafted him at 2.05 of my rookie draft, along with Jamin Davis at 2.06 and JOK at 2.11 to round out my linebacking dynasty corps (I originally wrote "core," because they were supposed to be the core of my corps). One is DL, one doesn't start, the other is hurt.

Well...that depends on the criteria you are judging on...

Toussaint was a writer and producer but never had a hit himself, NTTIAWWT. But it is apples and oranges comparing his New Orleans flavored RnB with Springsteen's Rock material, I think the funk gospel flavored Yes We Can Can is so different than Born To Run, that it would seem almost ludicrous to ask someone which song is better. 

I think Fire stands out because not many artists can do Springsteen better than Springsteen and this was one of those rare instances (Because The Night by Patti Smith also comes to mind and, in both cases, were songs that Springsteen was not satisfied with his own version).

14.x - Avicii - Hey Brother

another one gone too soon... Avicii was an amazing DJ & producer, but couldn't take all the things that came with being in the spotlight due to substance abuse and mental health challenges, and committed suicide at 28.

even though EDM collaborations across genres are pretty common now, at the time this track came out (2013) it was pretty revolutionary to make a dance track with a bluegrass singer.

The only one I ever heard was from the Producer (Mutt Lange). He said he grew tired of doing the standard 1,2,3,4 to count the band in before recording started. So, he started using other words and other nonsense words. These words fall into the latter category and Lange said they were German sounding gibberish.

 
Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames Yeh Yeh. I hadn't heard this song since I was a kid listening to my mom's LPs and completely forgot about it. Then it came on in the (excellent) Netflix series The Queen's Gambit.

Little Richard said this was the favorite of all his hits. And he always opened with it in his concerts, which goes against the conventional wisdom of starting off with your best song or strongest material, but it worked because it immediately won over the audience and he could go pretty much anywhere after that.

I would have gone with "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" just because I think it's the one that will last until we wipe ourselves out as a species, but this selection is probably the better record.

This is a great record, but "Rip It Up" is even better

 
Foster the People - Helena Beat

Torches is one of the better pop albums of the past 15 years IMHO.  That being said FTP hasn't been able to match that same level of success since their debut, although there are several other songs from subsequent albums that I listen to.   I've seen them live twice, and they aren't great live mostly because they are one of those bands that are just better in a studio as the vocal chops aren't quite there IMHO but it's still a good show.   "Pumped Up Kicks" was their biggest hit and their most recent was "Sit Next to Me" which I also really like.

Dinosaur Jr. - Back To Your Heart 

Some bands never get off the ground, immolating immediately. Dinosaur Jr. has had two eras, one in the late eighties and early nineties, and one in the aughts and beyond. "Back To Your Heart" is from their second era that began in 2007, approximately twenty years after they first roamed the earth. Penned and sung by Lou Barlow with J. Mascis accompaniment and guitar shredding, it's in waltz time, it's off of the album Beyond, and it is arguably the best song they ever put out. It's certainly my favorite.
