This quote is a perfect distillation of coaches' risk aversion (1 Viewer)

It seems mandatory to point out that the last Super Bowl turned on a coach defying the conservative, CW-approved move.

There's a difference between going against the CW because the numbers say it's the higher percentage play and doing it just to be contrary. Think of it as Rivera vs. Tomlin. Whatever you think of Carroll's decision, it was not the clear optimal decision from a quantitative standpoint. In fact, IIRC, there was some analysis afterward that confirmed passing was a lower-percentage play.

Just pointing out that Carroll was the opposite of risk averse, and in the most visible situation imaginable no less. I didn't claim it was the right decision.
