I'm going to be lazy and copy my thoughts from this week's Reading the Defense column:
Thomas Davis had fourteen solo tackles against the Eagles last week, while consensus top three LB teammate Jon Beason had only three. While it’s obviously safe to say that Davis will regress some and Beason will improve in future weeks, there are issues to consider that could keep the two situations from completely reversing fortune. First, Beason clearly wasn’t moving as well as he usually does. It may be a few weeks before his MCL injury heals enough to allow him to be as rangy and productive as his preseason expectation. Owners will need to hope he doesn’t sustain a compensatory injury in the meantime. Davis is a tougher read. On the plus side, Davis is completely at home at WLB and the Panthers are playing some Tampa-2, which will help funnel plays in his direction. However, though Davis faced above-average tackle opportunity (51) and rush attempts (32), a deeper look at the boxscore suggests the 14 solos were a perfect storm of sorts. Only 22 of the Eagles’ rush attempts were by running backs and only four of Davis’ solos were on running plays, despite a relatively weak day from Beason. Be careful before jettisoning an underperformer like Barrett Ruud for Davis. Davis has the look of a strong LB3 option with good weekly upside, but shouldn’t be anointed as this season’s ascending LB1 OLB talent yet.
