Tiki Barber takes some credit (1 Viewer)

Retiring star players often set the foundation for future success. In Barber’s case, his criticism of Coach Tom Coughlin and of Manning might have paid dividends this season. You can argue that Barber’s tactics became too public. But often, the only way to bring about change is to confront — sometimes embarrass — authority. Barber laid the foundation for what happened this season, from taking on Coughlin, to challenging Manning to step up, to tutoring Brandon Jacobs.

“I feel great joy for them because I know in a lot of ways I helped a lot of guys on that team,” Barber said. “I know Brandon was someone who benefited from me being there; even criticizing someone is a way of getting them to think about themselves.”

I asked Barber if he thought his criticism of Manning helped prod him out of a shell. “I don’t know, cause Eli doesn’t pay attention, ” Barber said laughing. “In this case, it made him stand up and I guess become aware.”

Last summer, a current Giants veteran, who is a member of Coughlin’s advisory board of players, confirmed the effectiveness of Barber’s outspokenness in an e-mail message. Under the subject line of “Miss U,” the message read:

“You would be happy to know all your work paid off for us. Tom has been unbelievably cool this year. Took us bowling last night instead of meetings and just been joking around and busting on guys all the time. You would be impressed by his transformation.”

Can't he just away for a little while. No one really cares about his take on the Giants at this point. It's a shame because over the course of the year I've lost all respect for a guy that I really thought was a good guy.

Just another proof statement that Barber was right.

Tiki tried to get Coughlin to change when he was there, then, in the ultimate act of selflessness, Barber left to send Coughlin a message.

At that point, Coughlin was forced to be a better communicator with the players and treat them like men, once he did what Tiki was telling him all along, the results followed.

Tiki bleeds Giant blue and made the ultimate sacrifice for the squad. The team first attitude Tiki displayed in this scenario was the most impressive thing the world has seen in the history of sport.

I don't doubt that some of the things that Tiki did/said had a positive effect on the Giants.

It's just that, at the moment of the Giants' biggest success in a long while, he has to claim credit for his 'contribution', instead of pushing the spotlight back on them (where it should be).

Typical Tiki, IMO...

"even criticizing someone is a way of getting them to think about themselves"
WHAT A LOSER. I suppose kicking someone in the nuts might also be a Tiki motivational method. As Jeremy Green says (or picked up somewhere)...there are two "I's" in TIKI.

anyone who thinks Tiki had anything to do with the success of the 08 Giants isn't a Giants fan or doesn't live in the Tri-State Area.

Tiki is about Tiki, that's it. I'm overjoyed the Giants won without him especially for Eli.

I wonder which team Tiki will choose to criticize this year, thus helping that team to the Superbowl?

What a guy!

Since he was so valuable last year with his motivational words perhaps the Giants will invite to speak at camp.

You don't actually believe any of what you just wrote right? Dude didn't retire because he wanted to help the Giants. There's zero chance that happened. He's a tool, period.

Man, give Tiki a break. He sacrificed a lot for the team and always played hard. Then he retires, the team gets their championship and he's public enemy #1 in NY. To top it off, his twin has a Super Bowl ring.

I'm not saying he didn't make the bed he's lying in, but please. The guy is getting his due. Let him think he had a little something to do with the title.

Post of the Month. He took one on the chin for the team

Look around, dude. This isn't a thread for rational thought and objective analysis. If you're not looking deep into the hearts of strangers and tearing them apart for being less than perfect you're not going to be welcome.

You know, everyone thinks you died with your wife and kids outside that bunker, but I know differently! :goodposting:

Tiki was the only thing worth watching on that team for years...give him some credit, they would have been just as good if not better with him running the ball...

It appears as though most Giants fans hate him now...classy...

When is Jeremy Shockey going to take credit for Eli's transformation. Tiki had absolutely nothing to do with that. It wasn't until Shockey disappearred from the huddle that Eli took those dramatic five steps forward.

Sadly, the truth is in the results for both of these guys. It is the very definition of addition by subtraction. I kind of felt bad for Tiki. I hope they cut Shockey. He is a cancer.
