Tim Rattay to the Bucs (1 Viewer)

Be very careful, when reading article on this situation, to look at text vs just headlines. To wit (from msnbc.com):

It's official: Rattay era begins for Bucs

Former 49er QB takes over for Griese, who is out for season

The Associated Press

Updated: 2:59 p.m. ET Oct. 19, 2005

TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa Bay quarterback Brian Griese will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee.

Griese was injured during the second quarter of Sunday’s 27-13 victory over Miami, and just before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline the Bucs acquired Tim Rattay as a backup for Chris Simms and Luke McCown.

But until coach Jon Gruden’s announcement Wednesday that Griese will be sidelined the remainder of the year, the Bucs had not acknowledged publicly that the quarterback’s injury was more than a sprained knee that might keep him out for a lengthy period.

“We did everything we could, and Brian wanted to do everything also, to get as much information as we could,” Gruden said after practice. “There was a glimmer of hope that we could put it in a cast and possibly get him back in four to six weeks.”

Griese, who helped Tampa Bay to a 5-1 start, was not available for comment.

“It’s a shame. ... I hate to see it happen to him,” said Simms, a third-year pro who takes over as the starter.

The Bucs have a bye Sunday, so the team has two weeks to prepare Simms for his third NFL start and also get Rattay, who began the season as the starter in San Francisco, acclimated to a new offense.

“I try not to get into the specifics of where people fit in,” Gruden said of Rattay. “But we didn’t bring him in here to hold a clipboard forever.

“Last year we started three different quarterbacks. In 2002, we started three different quarterbacks. There’s a chance, based on recent history, we’re going to start three this year. Hopefully we don’t.”

Simms relieved Griese against the Dolphins and completed six of 10 passes for 69 yards.

The son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms replaced Brad Johnson as the starter in the fifth game last season, but lost the job to Griese when he was injured during his first start.

“It’s his turn now. We won’t have a short leash,” Gruden said.

Simms, however, isn’t ready to say the Bucs are his team.

“Last year when I was in this situation, I don’t know if you could say the team was mine, even when they handed me the reigns,” he said. “All I can do is go out and play to the best of my ability and just go from there.”

Griese was injured when Miami linebacker Zach Thomas rolled into his leg. Gruden declined to confirm reports that the quarterback had torn ligaments.

“I don’t know the official jargon. I’ve heard MCLs and ACLs,” the coach said. “He’s hurt. He’s out for the year. He’ll have season-ending surgery shortly.”

Rattay, who lost the 49ers’ starting job to No. 1 overall draft pick Alex Smith, was playing golf when he learned of the trade Tuesday. He caught a redeye flight to Tampa, arriving about two hours before practice.

He’s looking forward to working with Gruden, who has a reputation for developing productive quarterbacks. There are similarities between the Bucs’ offense and the system Rattay learned in San Francisco when Steve Mariucci coached there.

“There’s obviously a lot of new terminology I’ve got to learn,” Rattay said, adding he’s excited to join a team that appears equally excited to get him. “Now I’m eager to go out and prove myself to show them they weren’t wrong.”

Body of the article totally contradicts the headline.

Talk about mucking up the waiver bidding process this week for people who need another QB and/or are trying to replace Griese. Sheesh.
:goodposting: ...have griese in both leagues :(
Simms will start for the remainder of the season. It didn't muck ANYTHING up.Though the same "system" and I use that word loosely, by the time Rattay gets acclaimated to teh Chucky System they will already be in teh play offs and Simms will be doing as well if not better then Griese would of.
You seem so certain. You have a lot of faith in a guy with a career QB rating of 66, 3 ints, 3 fumbles and 1 TD.Maybe it's his "last pick of the first day" pedigree that has reassured you so much? Perhaps the overwhelming confidence and support his coach has shown for him so far?

I'm not saying the guy won't do well - maybe he will. But I wouldn't bet my bottom dollar on him starting for the remainder of the year if he struggles on a team that has a very good chance of making the playoffs.
I am sure that the "last pick of the day" pedigree ranks up there with 6th round pick pedigree of Tom Brady too...
The pedigree alone is insignificant, I agree. But my point was that he has looked bad in most regular season games in which he has seen action (unlike Brady), and he has been given a chance to start before and had the job taken from him (unlike Brady), and he doesn't seem to have the faith of his coach (unlike Brady). Oh, and he isn't anywhere near as good as Brady. Other than that, it's a perfect analogy. :P

Injury does not qualify for "taken away." Gruden already started talking Simms for Griese in the media prior to the injury. Whether or not it was just a tactic, I don't know.

and he doesn't seem to have the faith of his coach (unlike Brady).

mumbling Bilichik is a complete different coach then Gruden. Gruden is much harder on QB's then Mumbling Bill.

Oh, and he isn't anywhere near as good as Brady.

At least that I agree with you on. Brady is arguably the best QB in the NFL now.

Actually, if I remember right he was looking good in the game last year after he took over for Johnson only to get injured and have Griese fill in for him. He didn't lose his job to Griese, he lost it to injury only to have Griese play well and not give the job back to him. We didn't see what he could have done.

Wow...Bump Joey Galloway UP!!
Easy cowboy. Rattay is going to Tampa as a veteran backup. Oh and by the way, did you notice that Galloway disappeared after Simms came in the game? He did a pretty good job of spreading the ball around to whoever was open.

Buccaneers :: QB

QB Simms To Start

Mark Maske, The Washington Post - [Full Article]

The Buccaneers traded for QB Tim Rattay yesterday, but HC Jon Gruden has made it clear that QB Chris Simms will start and take over for the injured QB Brian Griese. Rattay was brought in as insurance if more injuries occur at the QB position.
What do you think Gruden is going to say and do?"Um, we think Rattay can come in and learn the playbook in a week flat, and start vs his old team in San Francisco"

or even

"Simms is the starter for next week, and as soon as Rattay comes up to speed, we'll decide who is better... but in the back of my head I think it's Rattay... oh and Chris if you are watching don't worry, you need to still go out and have a good game like the jobs is yours to keep."

This is all PC and sensible rhetoric right now. There were some valid points by Ira Miller regarding Simms not being a Gruden selection, the left-handedness, and a few other comments.

Look at the last three defenses in there... much less the teams. The Bucs have YET to really play/beat anyone good... there's 3 teams they should/could/would lose to...

...the fans, media, ownership, Gruden, et al will look for change circa 3rd quarter in the Georgia Dome after 2 straight loses, and an Atlanta team up by 21.

From CBS Sportsline:The Bucs have a bye Sunday, so the team has two weeks to prepare Chris Simms for his third NFL start and also get Tim Rattay, who began the season as the starter in San Francisco, acclimated to a new offense. "I try not to get into the specifics of where people fit in," coach Jon Gruden said of Rattay. "But we didn't bring him in here to hold a clipboard forever. Last year we started three different quarterbacks. In 2002, we started three different quarterbacks. There's a chance, based on recent history, we're going to start three this year. Hopefully we don't."Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Simms.

Bingo.  If you are constantly falling further and further behind as the game goes on you are far more likely to have increasing turnover stats as the games go on.  He's constantly hit the 4th quarter down big with teams knowing full well that they won't be running and that they couldn't if they had to and are teeing off with the pass rush and throwing extra defenders into the defensive backfield.  You're going to throw more picks down 30-3 in the second half than you would down 7-3 in the 1st.
This sounds great in theory when you haven't been watching games over the last two years, and you see the 49ers record. However, they have been in many, many of these games until the 4th quarter. Its not like the score has been 42-3 very often and Rattay was heaving the ball all over the place. A brief look at his ESPN.com shows the sharp decline in effectiveness in the 2nd half, and I have lots of ancedotal evidence to offer.. Bottom line, I don't think this guy is very talented to begin with, and he certainly doesn't do his best work when it counts the most.Doesnt mean its a bad pickup for the Bucs as an emergency backup, but I think expecting him to come in and do much of anything else is wishful thinking.

Wow. I honestly didn't think people would still be singing this tune going into week seven of the season
It's the fallback for those who don't know very much.
While I agree to an extent, 6 games is a pretty good sample, are you actually trying to say any of the Bucs opponents have been good? 1 at Vikings

2 vs Bills

3 at Packers

4 vs Lions

5 at Jets

6 vs Dolphins

Buffalo is now 3-3, but that was Losman's 2nd game.

The rest are below .500

Still, Tampa is better than most expected.

Dude, it's the NFL, not college where a powerhouse can play Duke or a IAA school every week. 5-1 in the NFL is impressive for anybody, I don't care who you're going up against. Blowing off wins in the NFL because they haven't played the Colts or the Patriots every week is pretty stupid, imo. The talent is spread out...everybody here should know that any given Sunday any team can win.

So what is the prevailing opinion here now?Simms just made the worst passing defense in the league by far look like a bunch of all-stars.How long can Tampa let what was once a very promising season ride on the arm of a QB who hasn't proven capable of effectively managing an offense in the NFL regular season?

Barring injury, I don't think he starts at all. I don't think you learn Grudens system in 2 weeks.
Rattay is pretty smart, but I have to agree here. I like it long term, but it will take more than 2 weeks.Back on the Rattay bandwagon. :)

As a Rattay owner, I'm thrilled. I understand the critics, but Rattay, for the situation he was in, was a pretty decent QB. I'm glad to see him in a situation where he might actually perform up to his ability.
Bump while I can ;)

What are you bumping? He sat on the bench for like 25 total games. Including 13 or so behind a 6th-round rookie who was awful.

Sure, but all that aside, he played great against the Bears!!! If you can't tell I'm joking, God have mercy on your soul.
