Jets RB Martin expected to return to practice soon

Although some in the Jets organization fear his career is over, RB Curtis Martin is expected to attempt a return to practice as early as next week, when he's eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list, according to two people with knowledge of Martin's rehab.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement on Martin's future has been made.

Martin, who has a bone-on-bone condition in his right knee, was placed on the PUP list in August. He has been rehabbing and attending meetings all season. He's eligible to come off the PUP list on Monday. When he does come off the list, the Jets will then have 21 days in which to activate him.

If they don't activate him during that time, Martin will go on the injured reserve list and be out for the season.

"The Jets aren't sure if Curtis can do it but out of respect for him, they're going to give him every opportunity," one person said. "They feel they owe it to Curtis. They want him to retire as a Jet and go into the Hall of Fame as a Jet."

Upon his retirement, the Jets are expected to offer Martin a position within the organization or on the coaching staff.

Martin, 33, will likely practice at least two weeks, if not more, before being activated. During that time, he'll see how the knee responds and then make his final decision. He must pass a physical before he's activated.

The 12-year pro has made it clear he wants to play this season and may be able to help the Jets' struggling running game.

After playing at home against Miami, the Jets play host to Detroit and at Cleveland and then have their bye. That gives Martin an extra week.

Kevan Barlow has received the bulk of the work (54 carries, 142 yards, four TDs) this season. Though he hasn't had much running room, the Jets don't believe he's the long-term solution. They like the injured Cedric Houston's toughness but don't think he's a featured back.

Rookie Leon Washington may get more time against the Dolphins on Sunday after a 100-yard performance last week against the Jaguars.

He's worth a shot if you can spare the roster spot.
gonna be now or never. Can't say I can recall a future HOFer being on the WW, maybe Rice? I figure he'll be scooped up by someone else if ya don't.
How'd scooping up Rice in his last couple seasons work out?
Actually IIRC he had one monster game which helped me beat someone in FF I probably shouldn't have. one secyeah it was 03 or 04, see week 15+16? I forget who got hurt but "out of nowhere" he came thru

I hate to state the obvious here, but the Jets are currently ranked 30th in the league with a 3.1 ypc. At this stage, I'm not sure Martin (if able to return to the field) is an upgrade over their other RBs. And I highly doubt that Martin would get anywhere near the workload he previously got.

I might be inclined to consider picking him up if the guy I was cutting was close to worthless. But I would hope that I would never have to use martin, as I doubt he will be worth starting in most leagues.

you're telling me that it isn't worth dropping a Marcus Robinson for C Mart?

Get Real.
probably not. At best C-Mart comes in and carries 10 times a game so that the Jets can say they gave him a shot at coming back. He is done - my god- HE has has no cartilage in his knee!

Already sitting on another guy's roster. Then again, this a 15 team league with deep rosters too but still. CMart no longer avilable so I don't have to make the hard decision of possibly trying to pick him up

I don't think it's actually a hard decision. He hasn't practiced in months. He hasn't played in games for much longer. The Jets run games is not great sure, but I don't think he's going to vastly improve it after that kinda layoff. He may come back and serve as a morale boost but - and this is a Jets homer and a huge Cmart fan talking - I just don't think he's worth the roster spot.At best he gets some carries and Barlow then ends up doing short yardage. But withWashington doing Ok and Houston maybe coming back in a few weeks - I just don't see it.I could be wrong - it's been known to happen from time to time.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Curtis Martin appears as healthy as he's ever been and the competitive fire in him still burns. The fourth-leading rusher in NFL history just isn't sure if he'll ever get back on the field.

Speaking publicly for the first time in more than a month, the New York Jets running back expressed his desire Thursday to resume his playing career and put his knee injury behind him.

"I feel as though I've gotten better," said the 33-year-old Martin, looking fit and in his usual game shape. "I feel as though I'm running a little better. The one thing I was concerned about was making the cuts. Once you get out there, instincts take over. I haven't been put in that situation. I don't know how that'll turn out."

Martin, sidelined with a right knee injury since the end of last season, was eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list Monday, but the team announced he'd remain on it until at least after the Jets' game at Cleveland on Oct. 29.

"That's the hardest part about this deal for me is that I just can't will myself to do things right now," said Martin, wearing a fitted Yankees cap, green Jets sweatshirt and navy workout pants with white stripes.

"I have to be smart, and that's what I'm trying to do," he said. "I'm trying to listen to the advice of the people who are around me, who know better than I know. For me, other people have my best interests and I have my best interests, but sometimes you need eyes outside of yours to see."

According to NFL rules, a player on the PUP list can't be cleared to practice until after Week 6. The Jets have three weeks to decide whether to allow Martin to start practicing. Once he's cleared to practice, the team would have three weeks from that date either to place him on the active roster or to put him on injured reserve and end his season.

Martin was noncommittal about being able to start practicing after the game at Cleveland.

"'Definitely' isn't a word that I'm going to use," Martin said. "'Hopefully.' That's the word that I use."

Martin was injured last season in Week 2 but played in 12 games before ending his year. That broke a streak of 119 consecutive regular-season starts and his string of 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons to start a career, a record he shares with Barry Sanders. He underwent surgery in December but was slow to recover. He was placed on the PUP list before training camp so he could continue to rehabilitate the knee, which reportedly has a bone-on-bone condition.

"I feel myself getting better," he said. "I don't think confidence has ever been an issue because I always feel like I can go out there. But the reality of it, me actually going out there, is another thing. It's something I'm not used to. You guys know me, no matter what I've had in the past, my attitude and my mentality is that I'm going to go out there until it's stupid. That's what I'm trying to avoid doing now."

The cautious approach is a departure from how Martin previously dealt with injuries during his highly successful career, brushing off nicks and aches while rushing for 14,101 yards.

"I'm probably on that borderline of stupidity, and I have to be honest with myself," he said. "That's the change. I won't even say that's the change. That's just been the law that's been in place."

Martin wouldn't reveal what his rehab has entailed, except to say he's been "doing enough" -- including working out, running and doing everything else with the team except practice.

For a four-time Pro Bowler who seems to have very little else to accomplish on the field, the question becomes why would Martin push himself to come back for just a few games.

"For me, it's just that this is my team, this is my job, this is what I like doing," Martin said. "And for me, it's more so than just playing football. This has become a way, a lifestyle, a mentality -- the way you approach every day."

Martin reiterated he has no thoughts of retiring, something 31-year-old Giants running back Tiki Barber acknowledged he is considering.

"No, not right now," Martin said. "If that ends up being the situation, I'm sure I'll make peace with it. Until that is a reality, my mind doesn't have peace with it."

Until then, Martin acknowledged he has set one short-term performance goal for himself, offering a sobering dose of reality for a player who won the NFL rushing title just two years ago.

"If I could get the opportunity to get out on the football field, we have different awards: the scout player of the week and we have the player of the game," he said. "I would like to go out there and get the scout player of the week to start off with. And if I can get that, then I believe I've progressed to another level. That's what I'm thinking right now. My No. 1 goal is getting the scout player of the week."

Anyone understand Mangini's presser earlier in the week where he spoke(in circles) about Martin?

So Martin's playing next week?

Seeing Martin go out like this sad, the guy is such a warrior. His knees are shot, and hope he doesn't damage them any further with this attempted comeback. I fully understand why Tiki Barber wants to walk away on his own terms, with his body/health still in tact.

those 2 get along well, I wouldn't doubt Curtis is in Tiki's thoughts

Unforunately, I can't see how he can come back from that injury at 33. The guy is a class act and was a great, GREAT NFL player - but our bodies are human.

I think he is bordering on stupidity - but I understand his love for the game. Hopefully he wont get hurt.

He's still on the PUP. He reported ly would stay on it until after the bye next week, and then would have to pass the team physical, which is highly unlikely. How do these rumors get started?

C'mon guys, he's 33 and a half years old on Nov 1. He's coming off a bad year, he's coming off an injury that had him on PUP, he has no cartilage left.

He's done. He was fantastic 2 years ago, but he's finished.

Sleep well, and dream of large women.

I thought he passed the physical...maybe not. It was in Mangini's presser....gimme a secHere's from Roto, just a snip. I'll try and post more later. I watched it and Mangini had to make BB proud with his dancing around questions."We'll look at it next week and gauge where it is," Mangini said. "It's Curtis. If he's the best player, he'll play."
