That was a very nerve wracking night. If we lost that pick, it could have easily set the franchise back years. They will be better next year, so this was probably their only shot at a top 5 pick anytime soon. I could have easily seen Mitch and Jimmy overcompensating on losing the pick and destroying our cap room by wasting it on the Hibberts and the Rondo's of the world.

With this pick we now will have 3 very very solid building blocks. Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, and the #2 pick. If we can hit on some solid guys at 27 and 34, that's 5 pieces on rookie contracts.

The only problem with the 2nd pick is if the Wolves take Towns, I don't know how good a future Randle, Okafur combo would do down low. At this point the Lakers just need valuable pieces, and need to draft either center that is there and figure it out later like the Sixers are doing.

In FA, they need a 3 and D guy. Obviously the dream would be somehow stealing Jimmy Butler, but obviously that will be tough as he's a RFA. More realistic would be trying to steal Tobias Harris or Kris Middleton.

Either way, it was a very good night. For the first time in 32 years the Lakers have one of the first couple picks, so this will be a fun month of looking forward to draft night.

If you watched the game tonight, you know big men are overrated. The way to win now is with guards.

Bigs at the top of the draft have a much higher bust rate than guards/wings.

Yet when it comes down to it, teams tend to draft size.

Russell/Mudiay/Winslow could all end up being the best player in the draft. Likely lower floors than the bigs but possibly more upside. I'm not much of an Okafor fan.

Would have absolutely loved to see Phil's face when they fell to 4. Particulary after his 'cant win with shooters' tweet -- and how he likely to miss on the 2 bigs. Even if you want to throw the Knicks a bone and they get Marc Gasol or Love. They're not doing anything anytime soon with Gasol or Love/Melo/Mudiay. I guess they can pray the Lakers do something unexpected at 2.

You know who the Clippers' 3 nice "building blocks" are? Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and (bit of a dropoff) JJ Redick. So if Jordan gets a max offer to stay from LAC, he'd leave a contender AND $30 million on the table to go play for a dip#### coach and with a bunch of young players?

Aldridge? Assuming he does bail on Portland, how does LA compete with San Antonio? Love can either re-sign with Cleveland or just take another year with them, even if he spurns both of those options, he's risking going back to a perpetual re-building/disaster like he was with Minny.

Also keep in mind that the draft is before free agency, so if they do the smart thing and take Towns or Okafor, signing a big could relegate Randle to a reserve role.

I'm not directly talking about Harris since I hardly saw Orlando play this year, but in general, I think we'll be shocked by the deals some of the UFA and RFAs get. Guys like Gallinari, Koufus, Kanter, Jackson, T Thompson, Shumpert, etc. are going to get paid very well.

It probably helps a little that Kobe and Rondo get along really well off the court, not sure that lasts if/when they play on the same team together.

So you think a SG that can't play without the ball and a PG who can't play without the ball will be a good fit? And, you know, that it may be the worst shooting backcourt in a league where backcourt shooting is at a premium?

ETA: Rondo isn't a good defender and Kobe is a horrific defender. So you now have a backcourt pairing of guys that can't shoot, can't defend and can't do anything without the ball in their hand. Good fit? mmmKay.

He's always hurt, has an awful attitude, and just isn't very good anymore. If he gets a long term deal I will be amazed. He was probably the worst starting PG in the NBA this year. If he wasn't the worst, he was really really close to it.

Ive thought the Spurs era was over at least 5 times in the last decade. Now I've learned never to count them out. It wouldn't surprise me to see them back in the Finals next year, or any year even after Duncan. That coach is too damn good.

I'm not on tilt at all. I just find the chances of the Lakers landing someone good (e.g. not Rondo) in free agency to be fairly remote. I am happy that LA is not taking the extreme Sixers approach to rebuilding either, that team is going to be a handful in a couple seasons. Purely building through the draft is a lot easier said than done. Getting a great player like Okafor or Russell and making smart moves around him can get you into the late lottery, but obviously as you succeed, you get worse picks (unless you're the Cavs). And if you're LA, you likely don't even get that next year.

Not to mention that the rules around FA now make it prohibitively difficult to just back up an armored truck full of money to an elite FA and have him sign on the dotted line. LA doesn't have that luxury the way they did with Shaq.

And on top of that, Scott and the Buss kids are all dummies.
